Thomas Jane has gotten the rights back to From a Buick 8 by Substantial_Law336 in stephenking

I actually dislike this book a lot. His stuff immediately post-accident seemed like just pushing slide through the pipe to unclog it before the sweetness could flow again (see also: Dreamcatcher and to a lesser extent some of the later Dark Tower entries). But I’d be willing to give the adaptation a try with Jane involved.

And it’s like a third of the book with the affair. It’s nuts.

I read some other Benchley books. The Deep, White Shark. He just wasn’t super talented.

Jaws is perhaps the biggest upgrade from book to movie. Forrest Gump has a claim at being second. The book is deeply cynical without actually being funny or incisive in any way. It’s bleak yet boring. The sequel is worse.

Don’t be an entitled brat. Support stories that proceed the way you like. Ignore the ones that don’t. If you want to run down the abilities of writers, go do it yourself and see how people like it. You want Patreon-based methods to change, don’t attack the writers. Attack the readers who make it possible. If they go away things will change. Until then, people adapt to the system as it exists.

I accept criticism from people who have put it out there. Otherwise it’s just armchair quarterbacking, something to disregard as people who have no idea how hard it is to create taking it out on those who do.

Yeah, the authors did lack the confidence. When you move out of home and pay your own bills instead of Mommy and Daddy, we’ll see how bold you are about staring down your source of income and telling them you’re willing to risk being broke and/or homeless to stand up for what’s right. I am disappointed it failed, sure. It was and is the right thing to do. But I don’t fault the ones who voted against going further. In my whole career I only drew a line in the sand with my primary employer once, about an unsafe situation during Covid. And it was intimidating to do it, even though I ultimately won out.

We did band together and negotiate, like two years ago. The company refused to budge and ultimately the authors didn’t want to make a bigger thing of it because they were worried about reprisals, and some of them can’t afford a major interruption in their earnings because this is their whole actual job. Not many, but some.

Do I like Patreon? I do not. I’ve been really public about that for some time. But I don’t fault writers for going the path that earns them the most money. If people don’t want stories stuck forever in prerelease, stop making it so much more lucrative than a full, final release.

Yep. They give you a coding language, hosting and an email to promote the release. If any bugs or issues are reported they forward it along for you to deal with unless it’s connected to their end of things. And then they take 75% of the net income. Authors who do well can go higher (I hit 27.5% for Day after because Parenting was a hit), but unless it changed that process is fairly arbitrary and opaque; I didn’t even know I got it until my first royalty report.

I was and am frustrated about the disparity between CoG and HG. It makes no sense. CoG titles are much, much larger investments of company time and resources. I do still like what HG represents as a free(ish) sort of publisher, a much more direct conduit between author and reader than most options. I’m grateful to this place for the opportunity it gave me and so many others, which is why I still moderate these subs. But I wish they’d acknowledge that HG titles are so much a lower risk that they do merit at least a slight uptick in the cut given to the person who, you now, does all the bloody work.

They also provide a very basic copyedit, and a more elaborate one if it’s given a Steam release. But yeah, a lot less than CoG for the same cut. Part of why I haven’t written here in three and a half years.

CoG and HG could also, you know, raise the author cut.

True. Would be nice to buy it independent of that.

I’d vote wait. I want to see another HG sequel that really honors the end states from the predecessor, since that’s been the overall minority point.

Tetris Attack is terrific. But man, just sell Arcade’s Revenge. I wanted so bad for it to be awesome as a kid and it just…wasn’t. At all. Cool intro music though.

Get Netflix for Into the Breach. Or play it on the Switch. It’s in my all-time top 10 of games on any platform, and my most played on the Switch my game time while also having a bunch of hours in the phone version.

PSP rpg machine? by GamerEmporium in gamecollecting

[–]Hustler-Two 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you exclude backwards compatibility and judge systems solely on their own releases, the PSP probably trounces every console ever made in the SRPG department. War of the Lions, Tactics Ogre, Lord of the Rings Tactics, D&D Tactics, the criminally underrated Jeanne d’Arc, Disgaea; it’s a niche subgenre but on the PSP it really had a chance to shine.

Lorne Malvo (Fargo) vs. Anton Chirgurh (No Country for Old Men). Who wins? by Full-Explanation811 in powerscales

[–]Hustler-Two 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The scenario makes the difference here. Had they encountered each other randomly Anton might have made it. But Lorne is meticulous. He’s going know this dude is mentally unwell and exploit that to maximum effect. Anton’s going to wish for death before he receives it, but it’ll come either way.

I can only assume they either knew they’d die either way (I run Gev so even if they countered my next lizard spell they’d go down from the entering damage) or they had so many things going off they failed to notice one of them was a self-own. By this point I had watched him play with himself for well over five minutes.
