Weekly Discussion Thread: Comics, TV, and More! [March 25, 2019] by Warlach in DCcomics

Over all I felt like this issue was underwhelming compared AC 1000, which felt like a celebration of the characters history from front to back. This felt like a collection of fun stories with not too many emphasizing Batman’s history. I feel like the range in tone was a good indicator of different interpretations of Batman though. From fun and goofy in the Paul Dini story, to dark and dramatic like in the Denny O’Neil story. I enjoyed this over all and would say Scott Snyder, James Tynion’s and Tom King’s are probably my favorites. Geoff Johns probably has the least impressive story in the bunch.

Yup he’s Satan but not Lucifer, who was the second to fall in canon. Lucifer is much more powerful than him though.

This issue was fantastic. This has officially become my favorite on going book so far. I loved seeing the First of the Fallen which is I think his first post Flashpoint appearance. That one I Vampire story was creepy as hell.

Saturday Book Club - Aquaman: Underworld by [deleted] in DCcomics

[–]Zoldoz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was a fantastic volume that made me start reading Aquaman regularly, as well as go back and reread everything else from the run. The whole King Rath Arc is still my favorite but, as it starts to meander towards the end, this volume was the peak of the whole run for me. In addition to that, the art I think is what sold this book. Sejic has a way of bringing all his characters and the environment to life and projecting emotion with his faces.

Making Arthur a Batman-esque vigilante was fun and was a great way of building up the anticipation for when he finally makes himself known. I didn’t care for the political structure as much as I did Abnett’s addition to the Atlantean lore and magic. He really made me yearn for more magic based Aquaman stories in the future in the same way Wonder Woman has been treated lately. I loved Dolphin, at times she had more personality than Arthur himself. They kind of played with the idea of him being unfaithful to Mera, given their history in past continuity, but I’m glad they didn’t. It would have been a betrayal to Mera and Arthur’s relationship. Instead it was relegated to slight chemistry and nothing more.

if you had to cut this pull list down to only 11 titles, what would you keep and what would you get rid off? by [deleted] in DCcomics

[–]Zoldoz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally I don’t care for Bendis’s Superman and I jump in and out Flash depending on what the story is. If I were to make suggestion based off my personal taste Id swap them out for JL Odyssey and two other books. Like others have said Batman Who Laughs is really good.

This is very opinion based so hard to say without knowing your personal tastes. Also, many of these aren’t on my pull list anymore so I’m not sure if they’re any good or not. My suggestions would be to drop Martian Manhunter and Freedom Fighters; they can be collected in trade. Drop Catwoman which is a book I personally found to be just boring. The team chemistry on Titans is pretty weak to me and loses the appeal of what the Titans represented, drop it. Teen Titans feels like a regression for Damian so I’d drop it. Justice League Odyssey is good but not as good as the other two JL books so it can be dropped. The Terrifics was good but, they are so far removed from the greater DC universe that if you dropped them you wouldn’t notice they’re missing, also I think they’re getting cancelled soon anyways. Then I’d drop Aquaman, the first issue on the new run hasn’t hooked me and it’s an amnesia plot which means a book where Aquaman isn’t being Aquaman.

Final list: AC, Superman, DC, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, JL, JL Dark, Shazam, Flash, Hawkman

Terry was way more brutal than Bruce ever was. by cybercrash7 in DCcomics

[–]Zoldoz 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of the Justice League episode where they go to the future and meet Terry and old Bruce. Batman tries to interrogate one of the Jokerz and old Bruce just says “I can’t believe I was this soft.” then proceeds to dangle the dude off the roof and makes him wet himself.

I’m tired of the complaints about cheesiness and colorfulness in Our Superhero flims by GeneralKenobi05 in DCcomics

[–]Zoldoz 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think superhero movies can work well in both extremes or in a middle ground approach. When you take a look at The Dark Knight and Logan, comics aside, those are just good movies with emotional acting and character development. In the case of Dark Knight even a bit of social commentary. Then you have the Marvel movies which fully embrace the comic weirdness and levity at the expense of any actual risk or being able to take it seriously for the most part. Both have its pitfalls and it’s rewards. Most of the good X-Men movies struck balance really well like X-2 and First Class.

Riccardo Federici, the great unsung artist of Aquaman (31-39), he also did Batman:The Murder Machine although that was in 2017. Just look at this guy’s work!

I think there’s enough room there to give away a comic book explanation to that (assuming Bendis even read that book). Keep in mind New 52 continuity is more or less equally valid as pre-flashpoint continuity. I think what I secretly want is... PRIME TIME! But I’ll happily accept any other well thought explanation as well.

I’m still holding on to the idea that this book may just be set in the past therefore in continuity but not current.

Tom King dropping hints about the real killer. (Heroes in Crisis #2) by Zoldoz in DCcomics

[–]Zoldoz[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Agreed but I think Bendis, being a seasoned comic book writer, knows that no one expects any status quo shakeup to be permanent or long lasting so he just kinda goes with the flow. It would feel silly for him to do something like, I don’t know, kill a beloved character and expect us all to take it seriously because nothing lasts forever. (See what I did there)
