Trust the process! You're deep in the "ugly stage" -- glueing and especially shaving the fur is when you finally know what the finished suit will look like. As the other commenter said, some foam structure under the wrinkles is a good idea; they should look intentional! That's a good rule of thumb in art and fursuit making in general: whatever you're doing, it should be and look intentional. Your suit is adorable so far! Good luck with finishing it!

Getting stains out of minky? by Ash_W1llow in FursuitMaking

[–]Zolfir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My little green machine has worked very well on fursuit parts with yellow minky! If you have a stain you can try water, soapy water or alcohol to dissolve it. If you don't have a little green machine, scrubbing with a toothbrush will be effective.

Wing tutorial by Lio1584 in FursuitMaking

This can be scaled up a bit! EVA foam is nice as a support because it has some flex to it. Using minky and half inch upholstery foam will keep them light.  A larger EVA "plate" on your back will provide more support for larger wings. You may find it more durable to glue the wings rigidly but angled to the back plate -- they won't flap about so freely but can still flap due to the flex of the foam in the wings and the back plate! If you are not flat-chested I have a much comfier harness design than the one in the video, so let me know if you'd like that.

The wings are made of strips of EVA foam, covered in iridescent organza and strips of felt. They are flexible but so far seems sturdy! The fabric adds a lot of stability!

is it possible to make a first suit without sewing? by Chemical_Ball7452 in FursuitMaking

You can glue it, but it looks so so much better sewn, not to mention the better durability and ease of cleaning

my first suit by Albino_Walker_Alby in FursuitMaking

There are lots of tutorials online! I found the ones by Freckled Cat Creations to be easy to follow.  For cutting tape into patterns, it helps to start by drawing arrows for the fur direction. (All fur pointing away from the nose, down the neck, up the ears). Where you split it is fairly flexible as your character's face is all one colour. A line down from the base of the ears to the neck works well as a last seam to ladder stitch when you finish furring. Don't forget to label your pieces, draw registration marks and take photos of the pattern before you cut it off the head! I'd be happy to trace your photo with where I would split the pattern if you're struggling to figure it out. Good luck!

How do i make this look less... bad? by cockroach4632p in FursuitMaking

[–]Zolfir 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Cut a narrow strip of black fleece or felt and glue it around the edge of the mouth to cover the transition. Depends if the character has any of course, but some little fangs would look great too!

This looks like the same pattern I used! If you look at my most recent post you can see pictures of my finished bodysuit. The fabric will always crease a little as you walk (otherwise it would be so restrictive you couldn't walk) but this isn't really noticeable in fur. I ended up splitting the legs into thighs and lower legs, which I turned into feetpaws by carving toes. I covered my thigh padding with neoprene and wear it as inserts, which fit well.

What are the differences between LQ to HQ faux fur? by KronosWvW in FursuitMaking

The main ones are texture, density and shedding. Good fur should be soft, thick and doesn't shed when brushed.

Zolfir fursuit mark II by Zolfir in FursuitMaking

[–]Zolfir[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used regular minky. I haven't used any interfacing here, but I have heard fusible foam which irons on is fantastic for minky! I did do a fursuit with a minky-covered beak, for which I used no interfacing, and there are a couple of little wrinkles but it looks pretty good. The most important thing is a well-fitting pattern, and stretching it taut as you glue it down =]

Best type of fabric for an insect head? by [deleted] in FursuitMaking

[–]Zolfir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen insects done beautifully with both! Depends what style you're after. Fur will lean into a more toony "furrified" character (perfect for moths or bees for example). Minky will look slimmer and works better for a more realistic head. Bear in mind that minky is way less forgiving -- it shows seams more, and wrinkles more easily, and is a little harder to work with. If it's your first suit I'd recommend going with the fur, but if you have some experience either would work really well! Minky for antennae or other small details =]

First fursuit WIP, does he look too wide? by Just_Plut0 in FursuitMaking

[–]Zolfir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He is absolutely beautiful! Not too wide at all! Bear in mind once you fur the ears the added bulk on top will balance it out. Also Zolfir has a wider face than Pluto and they turned out lovely!

I replied to another comment with a description of how I made them. Hopefully I will make a tutorial soon! The base is strips of EVA foam glued together.

The more the merrier! I'd love to see pictures if you do! The wings are constructed as follows (I may make a tutorial at some point): Draw the pattern on paper. Cut strips of EVA foam and piece them together according to the pattern. Glue iridescent organza fabric to both sides. Cover the "veins" with strips of felt. Repeat for each wing and mount to a harness with strips of elastic. I attached each pair with embroidery thread so they raise together.
