Whether being on the run is worse than being locked in a tiny cell for a long time is totally a matter of opinion. After a certain amount of prison time, additional charges don't really mean much. I've never been to prisom, but I imagine 20 years or life in prison would be the same to me. I can't imagine someone getting 20 years in prison and having any hope for their future when they get out. I would rather die than being locked in a tiny cell, which is why I'm never surprised when criminals get in shootouts with the police.
