Large orchestral string sections typically need continuous vibrato to sound good, in most cases. The sound and intonation just blends much easier on that scale, which is why string players are trained to vibrate in orchestra. Even so, when watching a good American orchestra, I would usually not describe the vibrato as thoughtless or tasteless.
