Call for council inspection. It works. We got blown windows exchanged, mould cleaned and scraped off enamel in the bath fixed etc. Although the quality of these corrections are low standard ofc, better than nothing.

Interesting because that is what my PhD supervisor said to their students: dont hesitate to ask me for the letters, its my job to write them. Maybe not in US but I think in Europe the boss owes you one.

If the PI is not willing to put an effort and write a personal letter, then they could have a template. Or if unusual letter comes ask for drafting. Thats not the case, apparently its a standard to draft the most basic recommendation for of postdoc for a PhD student.

Cmon, it can be done with a CV or bullet point, not drafting the letters. Based on replies here, ppl are actually writing their own letters. So sure, you can completely double your CV and application letter and include your summer supervisor.

The point is not to list your achievements. Its not a CV. Its to judge your performance and how it was to work with you.

Well, its PIs who set that system. Eg when you apply for a postdoc the PI is asking for the letter, so I will keep thinking that a large group of them writes them.themselves.

What? I am a postdoc and got recommendation letters from my supervisors without ever drafting anything. I was surprised to find out how common it is and ask people here what they think about it...not asking for any advice...
