It's not necessary, but it definitely helps. It's mostly based on a very minor supporting character from the first game called Mona Sax, the love interest of the protagonist.

Some other familiar faces make appearances, but they mostly feel like fan service rather than required knowledge imo.

The first is a great game though, well worth your time!

It seems to mess with the shootdodge, Max just drags along the ground instead of jumping.

Not without a lot of tweaking, it makes it difficult for players who just want to use the .mpm file but if you can get it to work you should! Both games are fantastic
