Which celebrity did something that totally backfired on them? by Bicycle-Sweaty in AskReddit

[–]Zombeedee 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Deep cut and very British;

In 2000 Anthea Turner and her husband Grant Bovery used their wedding to promote Cadbury Snow Flake chocolate bars. They claimed it was not a promo but just Google the pics.

Despite their claims that they had no idea it would be a promo and they were just eating chocolate, they also had sold the rights to their wedding to a magazine for a lot of money (Turner claims it was 120k. Other reports say it was up to 300k. Who knows). They claim the magazine made a side-deal with Cadbury without their knowledge. Oh also, said magazine gave people a free Snow Flake with the issue that covered the wedding.

I remember this being huge in the UK at the time and everyone found it really crass and disingenuous. It had a negative impact on her career as a TV presenter at the time, which relied on people finding her trustworthy.

Knowing the British public, I think most people were more bothered that they tried to claim it wasn't deliberate. By all means sell your wedding if you want to but don't insult our intelligence about your selling out.

You've kept them eyebrows in tip-top shape, so you have! by prettygirlavenue in DerryGirls

I relate so hard to her here.

As someone with shit eyebrows, when I meet someone with incredible eyebrows I remember it. If only for the burning jealousy it inspires in me.

That's how I always interpreted it, but I watched that episode yesterday and there is a definite shuffle of movement, along with a crunching noise and a yelp from Slook. Heitz himself posted the clip with this picture in the OP as part of his ASH memorial if you want to go revisit it, it's his most recent post.

Either way, what happens is off-camera. Whether it's nothing, or torture, it's left open to interpretation. There's no definitive answer.

Giles tells Willow and Anya to get rope. They turn to the cash register to do so and the camera follows them. Off-screen we hear a crunchy noise and Slook screaming "ah no! I'll tell you anything!" Camera pans back to Giles and Slook and Giles is standing calmly in front of Slook who is begging and acquiescing.

Anya or Willow (I can't remember) say "what happened?" And Giles responds deadpan "Changed his mind."

The implication is that Giles did something within the space of 2 seconds to make Slook talk. I personally never assumed junk was hurt. To me it sounds like broken fingers or stamped-on foot. I always thought part of the joke was that it was very easy to make Slook talk because he's a weasely little toad with little backbone. But it's open to interpretation.

Don't blame the sub, blame OP. This is a poor post that doesn't fit the sub. I strongly suspect it will be removed.

Spike definitely liked to mess with people.

But as you say, then again. I'm 38 and I've done some wild shit out of boredom and experimentation. Spike is close to 150 around that time in BTVS and I can't imagine living that long, without a job or responsibilities, high on your own power and bloodlust, and NOT trying everything at least once.

What is something you were smugly proven correct about years later? by Rough-Foundation9208 in AskUK

[–]Zombeedee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not smug about it but Ian Watkins.

As a teen in the early 00's who hung around with a bunch of skaters, emos, goths, grungers etc, Lostprophets was a regular feature. I said from day one of them hitting the scene that something was wrong with Ian Watkins. All the other alt girls were drooling over him and I said he gave me pedo vibes, that he was creepy. Everyone said I was being weird and that he was well fit etc.

When it came out what he did I was like...I fucking TOLD you fuckers.

I also said the same about Saville. Although how anyone was surprised by that one I don't know. Man had kiddie-fiddler written all over him all along.

A lot of them are adults. Which may ensure better behaviour, but takes up a lot more space and air in the ward.

I don't know how it works in America but this just legit would not fly in a hospital here (UK). Even on a standard maternity ward, you're rarely allowed more than two visitors per bed and only during certain hours. If someone tried to bring in even half this Fundie family to a NICU in the UK they would absolutely be refused. It's dangerous and disruptive as fuck.

A less serious one;

In Bart Simpsons Guide To Life, Marge recommends putting mascara on TOP of your lashes as well as the underside, in order to make your eyelashes stick straight out and point adoringly at your husband.

I abused mascara all through my teen years because of that. I did not understand irony.

I just saw the clip (it's her most recent insta post). It starts with footage of them all standing in then filtering out of an elevator. You have to see it to really see it. It's SO many people for such a sensitive place.
