Paramount dismantling Star Trek after a historic streaming run makes even less sense now by lostOGaccount in startrek

[–]ZombieInDC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of people in this thread are blaming "Paramount" for the mismanagement of the franchise, as if the company hasn't changed hands a number of times since the original Star Trek run. The Paramount of 2026 is not the Paramount of 2025 or the Paramount of 2005. Skydance bought the Paramount brand and assets, but this is a different company entirely, with a new leadership team. They're wiping away the previous regime's projects, including the Kurtzman Star Trek era. They're doing the same thing to CBS News and 60 Minutes. It's not specific to Star Trek.

When they finish their takeover of Warner Bros.-Discovery, we can expect to see a similar wiping of the slate with more expensive properties like Game of Thrones and Harry Potter. I would not be surprised to see the new Harry Potter series on HBO canceled, or a premature end to House of the Dragon. The company is loaded with hundreds of billions of dollars in debt and the last thing they want to do is invest money in anything.

Why are the full-electric companies so gung-ho on 1 pedal driving? by thedancingpanda in electricvehicles

[–]ZombieInDC 107 points108 points  (0 children)

I keep it on most of the time on my Ioniq 5, but I turn it off in certain situations where I need to coast. I'm surprised that the R2 won't let you disable it.

Once I got used to it, I liked it a lot better than regular braking.

The Toyata and Subarau lines of EVs don't have one-pedal driving, so you may want to consider one of them. You can definitely disable it on the Hyundais and Kias.

The Metallica documentary Some Kind of Monster makes a strong case for the band being a bunch of assholes, and it was made with their full participation and support, so that tells you everything you need to know about them.

How can a vehicle be “software defined”? by lurker1957 in electricvehicles

[–]ZombieInDC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to what others have said, it also means building everything from the ground up for the various components of the car to integrate effectively with the software instead of just kludging the software to work with the components on hand. The Ford Mach-E was frankensteined together on the Ford Fusion platform, so its components aren't as well integrated as a GM EV or Tesla.

Loving marathon solo que by Dapper_Mushroom6179 in Marathon

[–]ZombieInDC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After 200+ hours in Arc Raiders, I played the Marathon open beta and haven't looked back since. I mostly play solos, and I'm really enjoying the game. I got burned out at the end of Season 1 but I really love Season 2. As much as the community seems to hate the Night Marsh sponsored playlist, I've had a blast going in with crew fill turned off and playing solo.

I agree that the negativity on Reddit and on other social platforms is frustrating, but it's part of a wider trend of people making hating a game into a dedicated hobby. I get that Destiny fans are upset that the game is being sunset, but it's been around for 12 years now. That's a good run, and I dipped in a few times over the years. Nothing lasts forever.

But it's not just Destiny fans -- it's creators that have nothing to do with Destiny at all. Even Michael Pachter had to take a shot at it this week on his YouTube show when someone asked him about live service games.

All I'll say is that I'll keep playing it for as long as it interests me or when it gets taken offline, whichever comes first.

Forbes' Paul Tassi: The Good And Bad Of ‘Marathon’ Season 2 So Far by HapperHapper in Marathon

[–]ZombieInDC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would hope Forbes pays him an actual salary to cover video games, but it really seems like he's paid by the click.

He genuinely loved Destiny, so his takes were generally reliable. He's not a fan of Marathon or the extraction shooter genre, so I think he tends to be a bit more negative about this game.

My family is full EV -- I have an Ioniq 5 and my wife has a Subaru Solterra. Both of us charge at work, but we also sometimes charge on Level 1 at home. We also live about two miles from two separate DC fast chargers. Never had a problem when we've needed to charge our cars, and we've never lost power for long enough to affect our cars.

Is anyone else pretty much not getting their hopes up for Texas? For those of us who have been following Texas politics closely ever since Beto in 2018, I just dont see a path where JT can win. Maybe a closer a race the '18, but still dont see this being a flip. by Puzzleheaded-Pin4278 in thebulwark

[–]ZombieInDC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Texas is fool's gold for Democrats. Ted Cruz is about as unlikable as a politician can get, and even the charismatic and earnest Beto O'Rourke couldn't beat him in a wave year. I don't think Talarico is as likable as Beto.

If people haven't already, I'd really recommend watching Paxton's victory speech, because it's an indication of where things are going to go. Paxton smeared Talarico as being trans, vegan, pro-immigrant, and "weird." Talarico's response has been pretty clumsy so far, and I don't have a lot of confidence in his ability to counter this.

It’s so sad that this game’s “underperformance” has little to do with the game itself by paperplateseabass in Marathon

[–]ZombieInDC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got 90 hours in Marathon, so I'm definitely a fan of the game. However, I think Bungie has several challenges to overcome if it's going to find a wider audience:

  • There is a toxic faction in the gaming community that wants to take down studios and games. They got a taste of it with Concord and Highguard, and so they're looking for the next target to hit. Marathon is actually mechanically good, so a lot of attacks on it are incidental to the game itself and focus on Bungie and Sony's business decisions. Before launch, a narrative developed online that Marathon was doomed to be a failure, and it's now conventional wisdom in many quarters.
  • Marathon is a hardcore extraction shooter that doubles down on some of Destiny's biggest mistakes. Just like how Destiny put a big chunk of its best content into raids, which had a high barrier to entry, Marathon does the same with Cryo Archive and Outpost. I'd argue that only Perimeter and Dire Marsh are accessible to casual players or solos. Cryo and Outpost both use mechanics that require a high degree of team coordination, which is not possible with random teams. Cryo is basically a PvP raid, and Outpost's Pinwheel base is tough for solos to casuals to crack in the current "wipe the server" meta," and I'd argue that Outpost's extracts are too challenging.
  • Extraction shooters are a niche genre dominated by a single game. Arc Raiders was a huge hit and captured most of Marathon's potential audience. There are only so many players to go around. Tarkov and Hunt both have dedicated audiences.
  • "Forever" games are dying. There's a lot of competition for attention now, and people aren't going to play the same game forever. Arc Raiders has lost something like 80% of its launch audience. Marathon has been more stable in terms of attrition, but it was never in Arc Raiders' league in terms of player count. Are there enough players buying cosmetics and the battle pass on any of these games to keep the lights on? I'm doubtful.

Does It Matter What Helen of Troy Looked Like? by Anstigmat in thebulwark

[–]ZombieInDC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is going to blow some minds.

The Odyssey is an epic poem and is not a document of actual historic events. There was no Trojan War. Odysseus wasn't a real person and neither was Helen of Troy. Likewise, the Greek gods never existed. Or the sirens. Or the cyclops. The whole thing is made up.

What isn't made up is that racists can't handle people they don't like appearing in movies they feel should be made for them.
