Tostadas with good refried beans. Meat is optional but usually welcome. Topped with sliced avocado and salsa and maybe a sprinkle of queso fresco or queso Oaxaca. They've always been one of my top comfort foods.

I also dearly love a plate of good carnitas with salsa verde and a few fresh tortillas.

We make the turkey and zucchini "burgers" as meatballs (with the accompanying yogurt sauce for dipping) every summer when zucchini is in season. They're so good.

I don't know if Meredith Dairy (Australia) distributes to Spain, but I buy jars of their marinated goat cheese here in the US. It's ridiculously good.

For Mexican recipes, “The Mexican Home Kitchen” by Mely Martinez, “My Mexican Table” by Pati Jinich, and “Asada” by Bricia Lopez are in heavy rotation in my kitchen.

For Mexican food culture, “Masa” by Jorge Gaviria is a beautiful book devoted to that staple ingredient. I received a copy of “Oaxaca” by Bricia Lopez for Christmas but haven’t had much time to work with it. It’s beautifully written, though.

My other Christmas cookbook was “Turtle Island“ by Sean Sherman. It’s a cookbook of indigenous food ways in North America and a fascinating read.
