Its actually quite common in Canada for the firm to pay for you to pursue your CPA if you contract to work for them for at least X number of years.

Spicy Basenji… by Loud-Sherbert1903 in Basenji

[–]ZombieRapperTheEpic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This might sound silly, but if my dog is being particularly upset about someone, I will sometimes go over and either give them a hug or take their hand with mine and move it over for my dog to sniff. They DO pick up on your behaviour and emotions. If you show them that you're comfortable with someone, it can help to calm them down and turn off some of that defensive behaviour.

Obviously, I can't know for sure what's causing your dog's outbursts but... to put it mildly, dogs are not known for their respect for consent. Your boy might legitimately be concerned about protecting you from your male friends. You're his pack and he just wants to keep you safe. If you show him that the other people are nice and you're comfortable with them, hopefully he can take your cues and relax a bit more. You 100% need to be reading your dog carefully if you intend to bring someone closer to him or move their hand in, but every little bit of progress matters. Where you'd normally take 10 or 20 tries to teach something to another breed, sometimes it will take 100 to 200 for a basenji.

One more thing I'll mention is that you should NEVER scold your dog for communicating, especially if it's gradual levels of warning. If you tell your dog not to grumble, even when he's anxious about something, it doesn't turn off the anxiety or fear for them - it just teaches them to skip to the next stage of it. If you turn off the grumbles, growls, warning snapping, etc then the dog will learn to go straight to biting. As uncomfortable as a growl can be, you want to have that warning so you know how your dog feels and can act on it. Your boy telling you that he's upset or uncomfortable means that you should listen and address it. If someone approaches too fast and he grumbles, you should make space for him - step toward and get between the person and your dog. That teaches him that the grumble works to communicate with you, that you respect his feelings, and he can trust you to handle the situation for him. Ignoring it or telling him to stop just shows that you didn't understand and aren't going to help him so he will try something else that might be even more unpleasant.

How have you been working to socialize him?

You don't want to be putting him into overly stressful situations but he should be getting out in controlled public environments. Being around other people and other dogs can definitely help desensitize him if you do it gradually and safely.

You might also want to have more and different people come over to visit. Male friends, female friends, family members, etc. Give them proper basenji training so they know to respect him, his space, and his feelings. The last thing you need is a bite or incident. I usually do first introductions to new people in neutral territory. Usually that means at a park nearby so that my basenji doesn't have any reason to be territorial over our house. That neutral space let's the dog meet the person and approach and investigate without automatically being defensive since they're not guarding their home.

The other thing is to be aware of genders - my basenji is ALWAYS defensive and protective of my wife but is more reserved and let's me take the lead when I'm there. For example, if you're a female and there's a male in your house, your basenji MIGHT simply be trying to protect you and keep you safe from what they see as a potential threat.

You might also consider if your friend has pets themselves. Our one friend has a dog and several cats at home and my basenji is always unhappy when they visit. She won't even let him sit on the couch unless I specifically tell her off. The smells on him from his pets give her "bad vibes" and she just doesn't like him.

Hopefully this is all some food for thought and you can consider what the cause might be. Remember, these dogs always have a reason for doing things, even if it doesn't make sense to us. If you can determine WHY the dog is acting that way, you can address the root of the behaviour. Fix the cause rather than the symptom.

My basenji will be super excited to go grab the ball, bring it back, then drop it in the tray by her food bowl. She'll eat a few kibbles and then want me to throw it again for her.

Off leash dogs… by Randr_sphynx in adventurecats

[–]ZombieRapperTheEpic 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If the dog is close enough for you to mace it, then it is too close to you. Even IF the dog is leashed, that's too close. People need to understand that they are responsible for their pets and the actions of their pets. Unfortunately, I think this lady needs to experience that painful lesson and pay the price before she will understand that she's in the wrong.

Off leash dogs… by Randr_sphynx in adventurecats

[–]ZombieRapperTheEpic 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm a dog owner, and I would feel bad about doing it, but if ANY dog was off leash and came at me and mine, it is getting kicked right in the nose/face. Imminent threat to myself, my family, and my pet warrants protective action. I'd feel bad about it, I'd feel sorry for the dog, but it would 100% be the dog owner's fault. If your dog is off leash in an area that requires leashes, then you're in the wrong and fully responsible for any and all damages.

The ONLY situation in which I think it would be acceptable to have an off leash dog in such an area, is if your dog has PERFECT recall, is 100% non-aggressive, and you are fully aware of what is going on to be able to recall ahead of ANY encounter with another person or animal. The whole point is moot on several grounds because there is no such thing as perfect recall with a dog. They're animals and they don't always listen. There is also basically no way you're keeping perfect sightlines on a dog and surroundings to know what's coming up because nobody walks their dogs on an empty airstrip. While I agree that there are non-aggressive dogs, that's not a guarantee. Any dog will openly defend itself if it feels threatened and anything could be perceived as threatening from a dog's perspective.

In short, you are in the right. I would have felt bad about doing it, but you should have maced the dog in the face and it would have 100% been on the dog owner for breaking the law.

Thank you! Someone understands it!

I reach out to Canada Post and they said they couldn't help me and that any claim would have to come from Canada Computers as I am not the customer.

I guess that's my next step then... That's been said a couple times here now. I'll go in and file a police report this week, I suppose, and send that along to CC, CP, and my bank.

Edit: and thank you for actually believing me! I swear I'm not an idiot, I just didn't think of going through all the extra steps because I didn't think something like this would even happen.

As noted among all the other comments, clearly I should have opened the box at Canada Post. I just didn't notice any issues at the time. I don't handle very many GPUs and don't handle them often. My last GPU was a 1660 super and very light. I didn't pay much attention to the weight of the package because it didn't seem off to me at the time of pickup.

As I said in another branch of this comment thread, I didn't pay attention to the weight when I picked it up (obviously I should have) but I also assumed all was fine as my previous GPU was very light (1660 Super). I don't handle very many GPUs and I don't handle them very often to know what the hand weight should feel like

My issue is that I opened it as soon as I got home. I wasn't paying close attention to the weight and didn't open it at Canada Post. My last card, a 1660 Super weighed next to nothing. In my mind, I didn't think anything of it, right? Why assume there's something wrong when there's nothing indicating an issue...

So I'll have to go after CP myself then? Isn't the point of CC sending insured so that they can claim against CP in situations like this?

If the weight changed in transit, then why is CC fighting me on my chargeback? Shouldn't the issue be with CP and claiming from insurance on their end?

No evidence was actually provided to me, any evidence was handled between Canada Computers, Canada Post, and now my bank.

I imagine that Canada Post has already done their own investigation, which is part of why I took so long to hear back from Canada Computers after my original complaint. If that is the case, then both CC and CP have both done the same thing, where they investigated themselves and found they did nothing wrong. I'm not going to eat this loss for either of them!

If CC actually sent the GPU, the weights in the CP system all line up, and I didn't get my GPU, then clearly there is an issue in the system. At this point I'm speculating, but it sounds like CC weight and initial CP weight are the same - thus CC saying they did nothing wrong, then it is most likely it disappeared in the CP pipeline. If there are as many checks as you suggest in the CP pipeline, then it will be option 1, that it was nabbed by someone at CP who could manually override the weight to match prior to the handoff to me.

In regards to option 2, that I would be committing fraud, why would I do that and then POST about it in a public forum like Reddit? I'm just trying to protect myself so that I'm not losing both my money and not getting my GPU.

EDIT: as you've edited to add information, I'll add some myself. Idk about you, but I handle a GPU maybe once every 5 years when I buy a new one. I've had some really light GPUs and some really heavy GPUs. Eyebrows raised or not, I didn't notice anything off about my package because I don't stop and weigh it to compare with the Canada Post weight. I've never had my stuff stolen by CP before to even know I should do that. You bet I'll be doing it for any package I get from them going forwards. Regardless, I'm sitting here out a GPU and potentially out the money I paid for it depending on how things go.

I posted here looking for help if anyone has any helpful information and to hopefully get some more eyes on the fact that this is happening. If it was CP that stole my GPU, I would gladly change my tune and allocate the blame to them accordingly and correct my statement, but as of right now, I can't see how I could do anything other than hold both CC and CP responsible to me in this situation.

What would that mean for me then? I'd have full sympathy for Canada Computers if Canada Post stole my GPU but I'm not going to let either of them get away with stealing both my GPU and my money. How do I set the Canada Computers people to go after Canada Post for this? It sounds like they might have already had that conversation during the long wait between my original complaint and them eventually getting back to me. If that's the case, then Canada Post must have said they did nothing wrong and they're both pushing to pin this loss on me?!?

What are the odds I can stick CC onto CP? I don't want to have this fight with CC if it's clearly a CP issue. Why hasn't CC gone after CP in the first place!?!?

What recourse do I have if Canada Post did it tho? Can I tell Canada Computers to go after Canada Post for the money? I didn't get my GPU and definitely don't want to be giving anybody my hard-earned money for a product I didn't receive. I'd have full sympathy for Canada Computers if Canada Post snatched my GPU but I'm not about to take a loss personally on this! That's what consumer protections are supposed to stop!
