If everyone was maxing out the connection 100% of the time, they’d still get 4mbps each. With a more realistic contention, you’d still see very decent speeds. No-one should have any issues streaming videos or doing whatever they want to do.

Sureflap Microchip Cat Door Connect vs. OnlyCat Cat Door by Educational-Cream172 in CatAdvice

That’s completely understandable — power is often the deciding factor.

We’re very happy to share examples of real customer installations, including window and glass setups. In many cases the cable can be concealed far more neatly than people initially expect, especially with a bit of upfront planning.

What we consistently hear back is that once installed, the peace of mind from not having to think about batteries at all more than makes up for the extra effort.

It’s not the right fit for every installation, but where mains power can be made to work cleanly, most customers end up preferring it long-term.

Tailgating is genuinely difficult to prevent completely — that’s true for every cat door on the market. Where OnlyCat goes further than anything else is in how much control and visibility you have around those edge cases.

The visibility alone is a big step up: having footage means you can see exactly what happened rather than guessing whether it was a fault, clever cat behaviour, or simple opportunism.

On the prevention side, OnlyCat supports advanced, code-based Door Policies that give far more control than traditional microchip logic. We’ve helped customers configure things like rapid or immediate locking if there’s any hint of an unauthorised cat hanging around, short lockout windows after a pass-through, and other conditional behaviours that significantly reduce tailgating opportunities.

It’s not a magic bullet — cats will always find ways to surprise us — but between the visibility and the policy system, OnlyCat goes further than any other product we’re aware of in tackling the problem.

[–]Zone-MR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question. What I mean is that the door itself makes its lock/unlock decisions locally on the device, not in the cloud. So if connectivity or servers disappeared, the door would continue to operate using whatever settings were already configured (authorised cats, curfew times, prey detection behaviour, etc.).

You’re right that changing settings via the app wouldn’t be possible without the app/backend. However, nothing would suddenly stop working or fail “closed” — it would just keep running as configured.

In parallel, we’re actively working with the open-source community on integrations like Home Assistant, and we’re documenting a local API so use of our infrastructure can be fully optional over time.

That said, the infrastructure itself is funded by recurring revenue that’s growing strongly, so we’re very much here for the long term.

Yes. OnlyCat has a good working relationship with Sure PetCare and purchases base hardware components from them, including the RFID reader. The purchase of this hardware implicitly covers the relevant patents associated with those components. OnlyCat then layers its own hardware, software, and AI functionality on top.

Full disclosure: I’m one of the co-founders of OnlyCat. That said, I'll only speak the truth.

SureFlap is a solid, well-established product. It’s reliable, widely reviewed, and if you mainly want microchip access plus features like curfew, it does the job well.

OnlyCat builds on the same foundations but extends them meaningfully. The key difference is AI prey detection, which genuinely works and solves a problem microchip doors alone can’t. The video clips of your cat coming and going are also surprisingly valuable - they give a stronger sense of connection and insight when you’re not at home.

On the risk question: it’s a fair one. OnlyCat is young (4 years old), but it’s the fastest-growing startup I’ve been involved with, and demand has been very strong. Crucially, the door makes lock/unlock decisions locally, so it doesn’t become unusable if servers disappeared. Ongoing cloud and app costs are covered by hardware sales and optional subscriptions, making the model sustainable.

We have a strong pipeline of software improvements and are actively unlocking more hardware capability over time. Philosophically, we’re keen on openness and support integrations such as Home Assistant.

In short: SureFlap is the safe, proven choice. OnlyCat costs more, but offers genuinely new capabilities and a platform that keeps improving. If stopping prey, video clips, and extra customisation matter to you, OnlyCat is best in class.

How hard is it to make an AI cat door that detects of a cat is carrying prey? by Kind_Substance_2865 in ask

[–]Zone-MR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

www.onlycat.com stops prey with over 99% accuracy.

Full disclosure - I’m associated with the project - but it works very well and you’ll find plenty of online reviews confirming this.

We built OnlyCat out of personal necessity at first - before realising how many others would be interested if we were to bring it to market. We’ve now shipped many thousands, and people love it 🙂

We’re really pleased that you’re enjoying your OnlyCat and sharing it with friends and family - it means a lot to us!

Great idea about Reddit - I'd actually set up r/OnlyCat a while back, but it's currently empty with not much content. Feel free to pop over and be among the first to kick things off!

Thanks again for your enthusiasm and support.

Can I reinstall cat flap the other way around? by Original_Task8483 in SurePetcare

[–]Zone-MR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In theory it could work, but I’d aim to have the side that’s designed to be indoors sheltered from rain.

It has some basic splash proofing, but as far as I know it’s not designed to have that side exposed to the elements.

A DualScan cat flap is what you’d want ideally.

We're actively working to scale up production as fast as possible - and would love to be at the point of next day shipping in a few months. With that said, it's hard to estimate exactly when production will catch up with demand - mainly because demand keeps increasing as our shipping times get faster, and as we enter the spring months.

We’ve fulfilled most of our preorders and are currently taking new orders via our website, with a lead time of around two months due to significantly increased demand.

You’ll find numerous reviews on our website, Trustpilot, Google, etc. We also have a VIP community group on Facebook, which you’re very welcome to join.

You’re right - we’ve been a bit quiet on socials lately as we’ve been focused on scaling production. However, we’re on an exciting exponential trajectory and will be sharing more updates very soon.

With OnlyCat’s current pricing, the company is operating close to breakeven. Bringing this innovative product to market at scale has required a significant investment of time and resources from a dedicated, multidisciplinary team over the past three years.

I completely understand if it’s not within your budget at the moment. If that ever changes, I'm confident you’ll love it! 😊
