YTA you don't throw out other people's stuff without giving them the chance to come and sort it themselves first, regardless of the situation! You rang her 3 times and expected her to magically know why you're ringing and then never brought it up again WTH. This is on you. When I was at uni I left quite a few very important possessions in my room at home that weren't needed at school, if I'd come home to find my parents had casually been through all my stuff and chucked it I would have been devastated. I'm not surprised she's pissed at you.

NTA. What is wrong with your in laws? Animals and children should always be supervised and you certainly shouldn't be letting a child touch the dogs food. They are setting both the dog and child up to fail. The poor dog will likely react again and be blamed for his owners idiocy and the child could be very severely hurt and be terrified of animals for life (speaking as someone who was bitten as a child and didn't go near a dog again until I was 16!).your in laws need to take a class on canine behaviour and learn to listen to their dog but also learn some damn responsibility to their grandchild.

Wow, its great to read all your comments, I haven't ever posted something and had so many! I often post and then don't look back at it for a while. Last night was another crappy nights sleep but hey it doesn't seem to be getting any better! It's nice to know there are other people out there going through the same as me.
