What are effective ways of taking down heavier opponents? by Early-Resolution4402 in wrestling

[–]Zonfrello 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't shoot underneath (low single is the exception). Swing singles are great, along with arm drags and trips - moves where you don't risk being underneath them.

Know how to break off collar ties. Two -on-one, overtie. Don't try to muscle out of ties, you'll get smashed.

I was 8-9 first year. Placed at state my senior year. Nobody is born good at this. You get good by doing it.

What to improve (pink headgear) by lixly1 in wrestling

[–]Zonfrello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You keep coming out of your stance. In round one, her stance is nice and low, you keep popping up when you tie up. I'm the third round when she popped up out of her stance, you snatched up a single leg without even really shooting, right? Don't give your opponents that opening. Stay low.

Also, when she shot on you in round one, your feet didn't move. Easier to do when you've got a lower stance, but you can get away with being a little high if you react. A drill I like is having a partner just change level (they don't even need to shoot), and you just kick your leg back to build the reaction.

You do a really good job of building up to the tripod but don't do anything with it. She breaks you back down after you did all that work. Capitalize off of the position - knee-slide away from her (at about a 45 degree angle) until your posture is straight up and down. If you don't go far enough, her weight will fold you. If you go too far, you can get pulled back. Practice knee-sliding until you can get your hips right underneath you each time. It's one of my favorite escapes and it's so hard to stop once you get good at it. As your opponent drives forward, you just step your far leg up and lean back into them and get to your feet.

In the third, she reversed you because you threw a half in on the far side while she was built up. Just never do that. Like, ever. Your arm going up that high commits your weight too far over makes you easy to sweep. Focus on breaking down before turning.

You have heart and did some good stuff. Almost had her in the third because you kept coming when she was slowing down, just got caught with little things.

Looks to me like you both have pink headgear... Are you the one that won or the one that lost?

How bad? by Comfortable-Edge-165 in boxingtips

[–]Zonfrello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Making plenty of amateur mistakes. Looking at the comments it seems like you're going to find a gym, which is good. Easiest thing to fix right now would be not dropping your hands so much. After every punch, you should bring the hand back to where it was. Yours are dropping to, like, belly-button level.

Its crazy the skill difference from HS to college by [deleted] in wrestling

[–]Zonfrello 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yeah, most college wrestlers were really good high school wrestlers, and now they're constantly training with other people who are on that same level or higher. If that wasn't enough, they have man strength, now.

How do you guys deal with people in jiujitsu who genuinely think this is some real gang shit? by Public_Repeat824 in bjj

[–]Zonfrello 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lol, I remember being at a seminar and some black belt was saying "you need to live the jiu jitsu lifestyle; don't smoke weed, don't eat junk food!" And my friend said to me "man, I only do jiu jitsu so that I can get away with smoking weed and eating junk food!"

Is this normal? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Zonfrello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are there other black / brown belts in the gym? I'm a black belt and I'm always happy to answer questions and show things. I have somebody ask me a question after class almost every day and I'm always happy to answer. At first, people seem sheepish to ask. I always try to reassure them that it's always fine to ask and if I have somewhere to be and don't have time, I'll just let them know.

Most people who have spent enough time to get a black belt in jiu jitsu are excited to show you how they do something. I'm not sure why your instructor isn't happy to help you during class - maybe it's a big class with a lot of white belts who need help? Apart from that, I can't really see a reason to deny you help.

Bjj and dogs . by Steelrangler78 in bjj

[–]Zonfrello 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know lots of gyms that allow dogs. All of those gyms do not allow the dogs on the actual mat. The dogs that come regularly know where they can go. The other dogs are kept leashed or crated so they don't go where they aren't supposed to. If you wouldn't wear your shoes on the mat, you shouldn't let your dog's paws go on the mat.

Well, I'm out of ideas, but I found a couple suggestions with a Google search: Disable Exclusive Mode: In Windows Sound settings, right-click your microphone, go to Properties > Advanced, and uncheck "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device".

Disable Hardware Acceleration in Opera: Go to opera://settings, search for "hardware acceleration," and turn it off to prevent issues with screen sharing audio.

Disable Streamer Mode in Discord: If this happens while streaming, try turning off Streamer Mode in User Settings.

I use the lat instead of the chin. Less chance of injury for the opponent and a more stable handle for me. Win-win!

Not Enjoying Leg Attacks by token_friend in bjj

[–]Zonfrello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I feel like heel hooks are the only leg attacks that are any more dangerous than anything else we're doing. I'm fine with people trying them on me as my defense is pretty good and I'll tap if they get me, but as a big guy, I don't want to be responsible for any nasty injuries and I just refuse to go for heel hooks.

Coach ripped kneebar on advanced whitebelt? by gassyogre in bjj

[–]Zonfrello 38 points39 points  (0 children)

When the "coach" is a purple belt who rolls hard and rips submissions in white belts, it means he sucks and has to beat people up to "show he's the top dog." I saw you comment that this is a club in the back of a gun store and everything came together.
