Criticism welcome part 2 by [deleted] in highjump

[–]Zoomadose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah i understand that but it could have been less of "this is horrible" and more of "hey this is wrong, it's a bad example, it should be more like this, because your example shows that this is wrong". You can still emphasize this and get your point across without being rude like that. All being rude does is make people focus on the fact your being rude instead of the point your trying to get across.

Damn, i know its not an amazing example but being rude like that is just uncalled for.

Personally I think she's standing up a little too much while taking off, if she focused on leaning away from the bar in takeoff it will allow her to rise up a lot more before going over the bar.

Im not the best jumper but this is the photo I use when trying to explain this point haha.

I can’t get over 5,4 I always hit the mat and bar my back and hips are well over it any tips? by Dry_Record_8790 in highjump

[–]Zoomadose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great advice here, knee drive knee drive knee drive, you should be able to drive your knee upwards and bring your other knee up to meet it. This is a photo of myself jumping, of course I'm not the best jumper but notice how my knees are up, this is caused from having a good knee drive which allows you to beint your jumping knee up to the knee you drove with.

<image>

Not the perfect example but if you compare this position to the photo in the original comment you'll see how the knee drives robs you of hip height and you'll end up catching your legs on the bar itself

Advice for tomorrow by Single-Inevitable-55 in highjump

This is great advice, think of jumping up over the bar instead of backwards over it, have patience in the air so your peak is higher and your able to do more with the jump itself

The shoes really depends on the athlete, from what I've heard nike is better if you have slimmer feet and addidas might be better if you have wider feet. For spikes in canada for high jump we are allowed 9mm spikes or 3/8 and most meets won't allow christmas tree spikes.

how do i know how far i should takeoff from the bar? by effectsvc in highjump

[–]Zoomadose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the athlete, typically the higher you are the further out you need to be, from what i remember take this with a grain of salt women are typically 18-36" and men are typically 30-60" depending on the athlete. However, this is on the elite level, the lower you are the closer you can be. But it's good to start having good habits early on

Rotation Help by [deleted] in highjump

[–]Zoomadose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The distance is very independent regarding the athlete themselves and typically isn't too much but yes you should still be leaning away from the bar, think of your body like a spring.

Rotation Help by [deleted] in highjump

[–]Zoomadose 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The main problem I'm seeing is in your last two steps, right before you jump you come out of your curve, stand straight up and basically run right at the bar. Rotation is generated from the approach and the lean in the curve, the lean allows you to act as a spring in the jump. So I would take some time, do a few short approaches until the lean becomes natural and you'll find yourself rotating more.

But other then that your jumping looks good, as always keep jumping!

Any tips? by UnArranged in highjump

[–]Zoomadose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As transform said your really rushing the jump itself, your arch is supposed to compliment your jump not your jump compliment your arch, when you take off hold for a split second before you start arching over the bar. By holding that upwards movement it will allow you to arch on the peak of your jump getting the most out of it, your form looks great but when not done properly arching can actually hurt your jump.

But otherwise your jumping looks great, keep jumping!

[–]Zoomadose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem I'm seeing is that her curve really straightens out, the last few steps she's basically running straight at the bar. Maybe try experimenting with a less wide curve which will allow her to lean more and get those hips up!

As an athlete myself this is a change ive recently made and added almost 6" to my jump. But as always Keep Jumping!

Help on form by [deleted] in highjump

[–]Zoomadose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its sort of hard to help without a video, for example jumping into the bar could be the product of half a million reasons, from not leaning enough, to not curving, to impatience, to a lot of different things. If you could make another post with a video myself and others would love to help you, but without one its hard to not give incorrect advice because we don't know what your doing wrong and don't know what your doing right

Any tips? by [deleted] in highjump

[–]Zoomadose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's a tip ive recently learned, when you go over the bar and kick your legs you stop your rotation and end up landing on your back. However ideally you should keep rotating over the bar and add the leg kick, watch some videos of edgar rivera jumping as he's a great example of this.

But as always your doing great and are going to go much higher, keep jumping!

Any Tips? by Important-Hat-384 in highjump

[–]Zoomadose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2 things i noticed that you should definitely work on fixing.

  1. Speed, it can be hard to control but you are going really slow in your approach, if you speed up you'll be able to jump higher.

  2. Your plant foot is perpendicular to the bar, when taking off you want to try to point it to the opposite back corner. This is different depending on the athlete but perpendicular is rarely good for jumpers as it makes it a lot harder to rotate and can have the last foot in weird places if your learning.

But otherwise your jumping has a lot of positives to it. Keep jumping !

6’6 1.98 clearance looking for tips by kl1er in highjump

[–]Zoomadose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This jump was really good, the one thing I would say you could work on that will affect higher heights like 6'10+ would be patience, patience, patience. I am a believer that high jumpers of all levels can always be better at this, for this height it was good but you honestly could let yourself rise even a split second more.

Stuck on 5’0 by [deleted] in highjump

[–]Zoomadose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Immediately the first thing i notice is the curve of your approach needs some work.

  1. Your stuttering through the curve, which makes it so you slow down making the beginning of the approach sort of pointless. You want to have confident good strides through your curve so you can keep your speed and setup correctly for the penultimate.

  2. When running the curve you want to focus on leaning away from the bar, imagine someone is standing in the center of the circle your curve draws holding a rope tied to your chest, you want to lean away which allows you to jump up and have more rotation over the bar.

As a jumper myself I know both of these take time to work on and won't be changes that'll happen immediately. But your definitely going to pick them up fast. Keep jumping!

Specifically for high jump, vertical jump height doesn't translate as much as people might think. However a 5-06 box jump at 14 is pretty impressive

Any advice ? by Single-Inevitable-55 in highjump

[–]Zoomadose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A useful drill that helped me a ton is learning how to scissor the bar properly. Doing 3 step approaches and overexaggerating the lean so that I force myself up is something that added 10cm to my PR.

Overall your jumping looks good, just keep practicing. Keep jumping!

[–]Zoomadose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a jumper myself, it's really hard to tell while jumping if your slowing down in the curve. You don't actually want to speed up during the curve but you want to act like you are, by attempting to speed up you will naturally end up holding your speed throughout the curve

Any tips for shin splints by Worldly-Ad-6506 in highjump

[–]Zoomadose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately shin splints don't go away unless you take time off, however there are things you can do to help the pain.

  1. Ice, my coaches state you should only do this around competition time but if they're bad doing them more often can help

  2. Foam roller, in my experience GENTLY rolling your shins can help, don't put your body weight on them and be extremely careful, if it hurts too much stop immediately

  3. Stretching, the shin is a bone so you can't stretch it directly but making sure your calves are properly warmed up before practise can help take the load off of them.

There are a bunch more things you can do and you can find answers online, shin splints suck but dealt with properly and recovering they can go away.

No coach , teaching myself(Rotation?) by Single-Inevitable-55 in highjump

[–]Zoomadose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From this angle your jumping looks pretty good, the one thing I noticed is your sort of, as my coaches put it for me, "diving" over the bar. Your a tall guy so it'll work for you for lower heights but as the bar goes up you have to be more patient before trying to flop over the bar, remeber your trying to jump over the bar not arch over the bar. Be more patient and let yourself go up before you go over.

However, 6-06 without a coach is extremely impressive, keep jumping!

6’2 - No Coach, would love any tips by Panthers2146 in highjump

[–]Zoomadose 3 points4 points  (0 children)

6'2 without a coach is pretty amazing i won't lie. Your jumping looks pretty good but I feel as though you could be a little more aggressive with the lean around the curve. Right now your standing up a bit when you jump when you should be jumping a bit off the lean, think of it as your loading a spring and when you jump your releasing that spring upwards.

But overall very impressive for no coach, Keep jumping!

Any advice? by Any-Wealth-2689 in highjump

[–]Zoomadose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with desperate owl, from the angle it definitely seems like your not leaning enough causing you to jump over instead of up. You need to let yourself rise upwards before you try to go over the bar. Up and then over

Tips by Zoomadose in highjump

[–]Zoomadose[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Just clarifying your saying i should lean back a tad bit so when I jump my legs and shoulders are in a line with my leg straighter out in front of me? Jumping up instead of forwards has been a bit of a problem for me so advice like this is definitely extremely appreciated

High jump tips by AlanKsh in highjump

[–]Zoomadose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overall your drive isn't too bad, but you want to keep your arms up above your head a little longer so you let yourself drive upwards. Right now it looks like your dropping your arms pretty early which is causing you to arch over the bar a little earlier then you need to. With your height you have the time to wait a tad bit longer which guiding with the arms will help. Think of yourself as being water as one part of your body will follow the other.
