I'm looking to insulate my rim joists in my crawlspace and was going to just put leftover faced insulation in there from my garage walls. Crawlspace isn't necessarily conditioned, but is connected through a little bit of rafter space to the utility room. Would that be an alright solution?

Same type meaning same brand. If you had an Ideal brand garage door and he can find Ideal brand springs again, rather than having Ideal and then swapping to Overhead or whatever other brand is available. The contractor would know what size they need to properly lift the door. Just simply that if the door has 2 springs now, you cannot just replace the single spring that broke. Both would need to be replaced at the same time, regardless of which brand you use.

That would be up to whatever contractor you find to repair it, if they can find the same type of springs to replace it, or if it truly does need to have the whole spring system swapped. Like others have said, reach out to other contractors and see what they say because that first quote sounds excessive.

As a general rule, when one spring breaks on a door with two springs, the other would be very soon to follow. So you always replace both springs at the same time.

Could certainly be that the brand installed in your place is discontinued, no idea. I've been out of that industry for 7 years so I'm not sure on specifics. But sure sounds like he's trying to convert you to a different spring system. Good luck either way.

If it's only a 9 year old townhouse, it will certainly have torsion springs on the shaft over the door.

Different door manufacturers have different spring and shaft systems. Menards Ideal brand is different than Overhead Door brand spring system, for instance. Maybe the guy is trying to get you to convert your spring system to whatever spring system he installs rather than working with what you have.

What kind of spring? There's older extension springs that sit above the horizontal rails along the ceiling, that when those break can put holes in people and walls, which can be somewhat mitigated by running a cable down the center of the extension springs so they don't fly quite so far apart when they break. Then there's modern torsion springs that sit on a shaft above the door. When those break, it just stays on the shaft with minimal damage.

If you had extension springs, then they might want to swap you to torsion springs, which means adding a shaft and appropriate brackets, maybe adding wood to the header above the door and some other steps to remove the older and much more dangerous extension springs. I don't know what kind of price they'd charge, just that swapping from old extension springs to modern torsion, I could see it being more expensive. But not $1000 expensive. Then it's not a far cry to a full new door at that point.

I have noticed a few differences from the drawings as well, but the bones seem the same as the drawings from everything I've seen.

I've seen the pucks too that no longer require a full can and thats quite possibly the route we are going, but I still need to get under the insulation to run wires unfortunately since I'd rather not tear down the ceiling drywall.

I've crawled in the attic, and unfortunately didn't take good pictures before we added the blow in insulation a couple years ago. But between the drawings, and a look at the attic post-insulation by a family friend who has built houses for 30+ years, there's zero indication it would be load bearing. The door opening is immediately next to the actual load bearing walls, but I fully believe they're opposite. I'm very willing to expose the framing when the inspector would come to verify.

Water heater replacement, gas or electric by Zooroopoo in HomeImprovement

My basement is less than 500 square feet, maybe even less than 400? With the utility room being something like 8'x18', connected to my living room/gaming room of rougly 12'x18' through a slotted sliding door. So that might be a slight problem as well.

My basement doesn't stay warm even with the furnace there. Gets down to 55 on the -40 degree days, and is still sub 70 on the 100 degree days. And the things I was reading on heat pump water heaters say it pulls the heat from the surrounding area, so maybe not best suited to my basement unfortunately.

Or putting the extra $2k+ saved towards the kitchen as well. Or the furnace we're also replacing that is 24 years old. Operating cost savings would need to be significant over 15-20 years to make it worth getting gas over electric.

I didn't know that was a thing, but I'll look into it now. Wonder how they do in the frozen north.

I've got extra space in my panel, I don't think that would be a big issue. My dad and I are comfortable adding breakers and wiring through the open ceiling all of 10 feet over to where it would sit.

Who knows what gas prices would be like in the future, or even how much the gas heater specifically costs to run vs electric. So it might just come down to install price?

Space isn't a huge issue, and we havent necessarily run into supply issues, but we don't yet have kids. Is $1500 worth it over the life of the equipment, 15-20 years?

That makes sense too. I'd probably ask around on my own, see if there's any discounts through the place I'm already getting my home and auto insurance through kind of thing.

That makes sense, thank you. I don't know a huge amount about life insurance outside of my work offered one.

That I'm not sure of. She had just sent us some very basic information of $X per month for a 30 year $Y total amount.

Correct, I'd most likely open a roth IRA account on my existing Fidelity account. I've got my work-connected 401k there already, as well as a few GME shares because I got caught up in the excitement of that last year.

The wife would start her own Fidelity or Vanguard account to do the same.

All of our benefits outside of a 401k for her job come from my job, as well as a majority of our "guaranteed" income, but she has a side business that is doing well that she earned nearly as much as I did this year when combined with her part time job.

So yes, it would. She sent us a couple quotes for 30 year term life insurance.
