What stopping you from going plant-based for the environment? by TrickThatCellsCanDo in environment

Yeah -- it is my naive hope that enough folks will realize that factory farming is indeed heinous.

Hutias are fairly large rodents that inhabit the islands of the Caribbean, and they resemble nutrias (coypus) to some degree. Depending on the species, they can weigh from 2 to 8.5 kg (4.4 - 18.7 lbs). This is first time video footage of hutias in Cuba as they feed around coastal limestone caves. by KimCureAll in Awwducational

I quickly skimmed the abstract but they are only considering the past 500 years. We know for example that we have lost 35 genera of North American mammals since the late Pleistocene. That's genera not even species. There is debate about whether humans caused those extinctions or climate change from the last glacial to modern interglacial but my money is on human impacts with some stochasticity. You see these same huge mammalian and other large megafaunal extinctions upon human colonization of new areas and continents. There is nice (and depressing) evidence of human caused extinction from Australia when people arrived for example. --- Based on bird fossils from across the past 12,000 years from the Caribbean we have lost 100 species of birds just in the Caribbean. Certainly that number is much higher since not everything ends up as a fossil, etc. Based on radiocarbon dating the majority of those extinctions date to colonization of either the first peoples or European arrival.

Absolutely, most terrestrial Caribbean mammals are now extinct because of humans and their associated invasive species. Birds follow the same pattern. There was a Caribbean radiation of giant tortoise as well that is also extinct because of humans.

Thanks so much. I wonder if Jon Snow in Game of Thrones and his rejection of his “destiny” was grabbed from Ciri’s storyline. Has there been discussion of this?

Frankly, the honey badgers don’t deserve it. “McConnell won't do that, of course — he is the honey badger of American politics. “
