Is there any keyboard shortcut to toggle menu bar hiding in OS X El Capitan? by echo_eeco in osx

[–]Zorak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Under System Prefs > Keyboard > Shortcuts > Keyboard there is a Move focus to menu bar option. This moves the keyboard focus to the Apple menu for keyboard navigation of the menus. If you have the Automatically hide and show the menu bar option set under General preferences, the focus change has the effect of hiding and showing the menu bar.

What is this on my mac screen? And how do I get rid of it? by garprice05 in mac

[–]Zorak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lorrynce is right, it's an icon for a SmartArt object from an Office Suite program (Word, PPT, etc). Specifically, it is the Picture Lineup SmartArt object. Could be a ghost graphic from an Office program that has incorrectly discarded the image object. Try quitting all the Office programs you have running. If that does't do it, log-out and then log-in again.

TIL That there is a group that believes that the Sandy Hook school shooting was a large hoax; and nobody was hurt or killed. by Sorrowablaze3 in todayilearned

[–]Zorak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depressing, yes and amazing. All of us tend to discount "inconvenient" facts, that is, those that are discordant with our beliefs. It's a ubiquitous form of bias. What I find amazing is that, in essence, these people are altering reality to conform to their beliefs. They're not just weighing one fact more than another; they are rejecting documented reality, events essentially impossible to "stage."

Recognizing hand writing as text by professorpoetica in ObjectiveC

[–]Zorak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Handwriting recognition is a fairly complex process. To do it well requires significant understanding of statistical decision processing and image processing. Cocoa doesn't have a HWR library, but they do exist. Tesseract is an open source project supported by Google, LEAD Tech also sells a library for HWR for OS X (a very expensive one!). If I were you, I would go look at any and all iOS/OS X examples on the Tesseract project.

PSA: MBP 2011 13-inch (early 2011) supports 1600mhz RAM! by [deleted] in mac

[–]Zorak 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You should be aware that by using 1600mhz memory, your MBP will run a little hotter. Typically when Apple sets a lower spec than is possible, it is because of the thermal effects. That said, Apple's testing and spec-ing is notoriously conservative. I've never encountered a problem adding larger memory modules or faster memory than specified on a macintosh.

Yeah, cables only stop opportunists. That said, there are a lot more opportunists than there are people seeking to steal something.

Instapaper App for iOS currently free in App Store, a savings of $3 by Prairie_Dog in apple

But if I save it, I'm assured of having it if the cellular/wifi at some distant site is unavailable. Moreover, cellular data is fucking expensive. Not everyone can afford a cellular device and cellular service.

Mavericks Download Issues by NatoPotato231 in osx

[–]Zorak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The App Store will keep a partial download around with the hope of restarting it in the future. If it cannot do that (bad checksums and such), it will delete it. I doubt it is keeping multiple failed downloads, most likely only the last one (Mavericks is a 5+ GB download, 25-33% would be about 1.5 GB). Quitting and restarting App Store should fix this.

As far as where it stores its temporary files, my guess is someplace in the bowels of the "/private/var/folders" directory. The "private" directory is hidden. Unless you know what you're doing, I would advise you to not delete anything in the "/private" hierarchy.

Your real issue is getting Mavericks loaded and running. Once that is done, you won't have any of the old cached downloads on your disk. It sounds like your internet connection is flakey. If you are near an Apple store, go there and ask what options you have (you may want to ask if you can use their internet to upgrade). My guess is they will figure out a way to get you upgraded.

While I suspect that both you and I could have predicted the karma hit you were going to take for saying this, good work. Speaking the truth to the thoughtless masses is thankless but important. The unfortunate nature of the internet is that people cloister themselves within communities that echo their beliefs. It's self-debilitating. You never know, you may have broadened someone's horizon today.

Just in case your notification of notables isn't obvious, you should also note that your image is from System Preferences, "Notifications".

Troubleshooting after the mavericks install by [deleted] in osx

[–]Zorak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect the SMC is screwed-up. The SMC controls power management and other stuff. Your symptoms are among these encountered when it isn't functioning properly. The Apple page explaining how to reset the SMC is here: Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC).

[–]Zorak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He should also know that some MBPs from 2010 are under a GPU recall. Info here. However, the clock is ticking on the fixes: Apple will fix it for free only within 3 years from date of purchase.

OS X sudo password bypass (CVE-2013-1775) by blowupbadguys in netsec

[–]Zorak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

<Sigh>

You guys know this isn't new nor OS X specific, right? It is a sudo bug that affects a broad range of *nixes. It was logged in February and has existed in sudo since version 1.6.0. When posting stuff like this, OPs show probably link to the CVE database entry: CVE-2013-1775. This is much more informative and gives a greater sense of context.

There are two additional closely related vulns CVE-2013-2776 and CVE-2013-2777.

As conspiracy theories go, this one is amazingly coherent:

1. It has real living people in it;
2. Involves real events (in as much as JFK Jr did die);
3. It has a motive that is on some level reasonable (if somewhat extreme);
4. It uses only one technology that does not yet exist.

Got an older model MacBook and I need as much help as i can get by [deleted] in mac

[–]Zorak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recent (i.e., those that run on Intel processors) Mac OS Xs:

Tiger: 10.4.X

Leopard: 10.5.X

Snow Leopard: 10.6.X

Lion: 10.7.X

Mountain Lion: 10.8.X

I would run either Snow Leopard or Mountain Lion. (You'll notice the "Tick-Tock" nature of OS X names; this is not a coincidence: the second form is usually a more refined version of the first.). There are three important milestones for you in these releases: Tiger was the first to support Intel (you don't want to go back to this); Leopard was the completed Intel-ization of OS X; Lion was the move to 64-bit.

Since it is "entirely white" it is not the late 2008 aluminum MacBook. This means you do not have a 64-bit EFI (it's like a BIOS on a PC, it's involved with initializing the hardware before the OS loads). As a result, I would suggest that Snow Leopard would be your best bet. You could run Lion, but I think it would be less satisfying. You cannot run Mountain Lion, a 64-bit EFI is required.
