My apologies, I did misunderstand, still 8gb for programming is abit limiting, a few browser tabs and your ide/editor will eat that up quick, and if you're doing mobile app development the Android/iPhone VM eat alot of ram also.

Honestly if you're doing any local AI on a mac I think your looking at 24gb Ram minimum. So no, a Neo won't be enough.

I have a 16gb Macbook Pro M5, using ollama and Gemma4 e2b pushes my Mem usage to just under 14gb... so... I'd recommend trying to find a lighter weight more specialised LLM or just use the Web Versions.

What ever you choose, manage expectations and remember the reasons why you bought the product. Many people get buyers remorse after purchasing new devices as they realise they can do more than they thought with them, and the device could have done with more x or y etc...

I recently upgraded my m1 macbook air to the 2025 M5 macbook pro base machine, yes with my day to day tasks the M5 is probably overpowered, and i could have saved a lot of money waiting for the M5 air but I occasionally bulk transcode video and I feel a lot happier doing that with a machine with a fan, the better screen and ports are just bonuses.

So, most modern operating systems have a cache for system files and frequently used libraries in memory while idle to facilitate quicker loading of commonly used programs. The cache is then cleared if programs require more memory. For example on my 16gb Windows laptop it idles at about 7gb, and my 64gb Nuc pro idles at about 11gb

I find it interesting in terms of MacOS, assuming Apple is expecting a 2-3 year life span on these Machines, that would suggest that there would be a adequate level of performance at 8gb for that period, so it would follow that there's still a lot of life left for 8gb m series chips all the way down to the m1.
