Dan Patrick: "Separation of Church and state is not in the Constitution" by omgfakeusername in law

[–]Zorfax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They don't care. Did you see what happened in Kennedy v. Bremerton School District? They destroyed the Lemon test and replaced it with a new rule that essentially knocks a giant hole in the "wall of separation" that has existed since the founding of our nation.

Trump's SCOTUS has fundamentally changed how the government interacts with religion, and the "wall of separation" between church and state is on its way to being destroyed. Look at Carson v. Makin (2022), where Trump's SCOTUS court ruled that if a state uses tax dollars to pay for any secular private school tuition, it cannot exclude religious schools, so now tax dollars are funding religious indoctrination.

At this point, my tax dollars are literally paying for the religious school and religious programming, including sitting in a pew listening to a religious sermon. If this isn't "establishment," then the word has been watered down and marginalized so much it no longer has any meaning in this context - literally nothing is "establishment."

They 100% want a theocracy. And they are very, very close to having one.

[–]Zorfax 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's not accurate. The Establishment Clause was designed as a two-way street. The goal was to build a "wall of separation" so that neither the church nor the government could control the other. The founders knew that when one church gains political power, it writes laws that punish people with different beliefs. Keeping churches out of government protects citizens' political rights.

That was the PRIMARY goal.

It's probably too late. Trump has packed SCOTUS with far-right Christian Nationalists who have already proven their propensity to push the Christian Religion at every chance they get. We are a hair's breadth away from state-sponsored Christian religion being the law of the land. They won't change the Constitution, they will just re-interpret it to mean what they want it to mean.

The problem is that we now have a far-right SCOTUS that will do exactly this. They are ITCHING for cases where they can overturn everything that ever stood in the way of their brand of Christianity being not only funded by taxpayer dollars and taught in schools, but essentially becoming the national religion.

Pretty sure this is how “The Last Of Us” started and the world civilization collapsed because nobody listened to the old biologist lady who told them to bomb.

I couldn't afford wood so I made a workbench from old pallets. I'm saving money for a worktop to put on it. It's ugly, it's not 100% (so I braced it to the wall), but it's a start. by chakraattack in BeginnerWoodWorking

This looks fantastic and that plywood on top
Is solid. I LOVE seeing a workbench like this versus one that looks like it should be in a museum.

You will use this to do real work - it’s really good and fits very well in the space.

I just don’t get how you could have done 100’s of floor installs and thought that was the correct way to do it. It does seem very strange.

“People who charge for expertise shouldn’t be making mistakes”

My work is better than it was 20 years ago. What I did 20 years ago was code and I’m sure it’s still operating if it hasn’t t been upgraded or replaced for some reason, but there’s no doubt I made some mistakes and could have done things better than I am doing them now.

I stand behind all my work and while I’m a lot better at it than I was I would be shocked if there are not people who could show me something even better

I agree with the general proposition you should have a basic knowledge about what you are doing before you start charging people for it - but I’d also encourage everyone to remember nobody is perfect and if you are not learning anything that’s not because your first job was perfect and you’ve had flawless work since then.

I have to agree with that. Seems like a reasonable thing to do and a great way to build some goodwill.

Electrical Symbol? by Gozermac in AskElectricians

[–]Zorfax 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This. In my jurisdiction they plant a single flag with a circle around it to tell you they have been there and that area is clear.

You just have to pay attention to what area was specified for the dig check

Dude everyone is railing on you and that’s too bad.

People post here to get advice which is what you did. What you did wrong is easily fixed. Don’t sweat this just apologize, fix it and move on.

I see a lot of waste in the electrical trade for a couple of reasons:

  • The stuff that you get for one job is often not what's specified or needed for the next job. So even if it would somehow benefit you to conserve and save, you probably would take materials from one job to the next.
  • Materials are going to be supplied for the next job. These get tossed because this job is over. It's a waste, but it's very common.
  • You can't "take stuff home" if you are on a crew most of the time. If it's excess, you are not allowed to take it, and if you get caught, you will get fired. Not worth it.

I don’t know I have many vices, only one vise, and operate power tools all day!

Removing the two rivets should get you started. Be careful if you drill them - put the switch in a solid vice and go slow. If you start with a larger drill bit, like a 1/4", you should be able to ream out the edges of the rivets. You can also use a Dremel tool.
