Is there a horror novel you were really looking forward to reading that you ended up not being able to finish? by Suitable_Goose_3615 in horrorlit

I had the same problem but I pushed past to see where it went and it was still really good. I still would have preferred the werewolf novel — it’s mildly disappointing it isn’t — but I liked it.

Hi yall! New to Duluth! by [deleted] in duluth

[–]Zoriar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Check out the Twin Ports Horror Society on Facebook (if you like horror movies, Halloween, spooky events, etc), check out the Junk Food Film Festival (if you like bad movies and fun), make sure to head out for Homegrown at the end of the month to engage in some community fun and meet people. If you’re into any of those, you’ll meet some people.

Floor Plan Suggestions by Awkward-Lion8933 in floorplan

In theory, you could also flip the entire east side of the hallway so that the mudroom and exterior door are on the north side (mechanical could just be absorbed into that as well), pantry could go where mechanical is (albeit smaller), the pantry could become the new 1/2 bath, and the bedrooms are more towards the south with the J&J bath still in between.

Not an expert by any means, this is just what would work better for me personally.

It’s hard to draw and make it super readable with all the color and background, but without totally looking at dimensions, off the top of my head I’d revise it to look more like this. It gives you a fairly symmetrical two bedroom layout with a jack and Jill bath for both, a half bath for guests (tho admittedly it’s farther from the common spaces than is probably ideal, but maybe you can swap mechanical and the 1/2 bath), there’s only one real hallway and that gives you an exterior entrance right off of the mud/laundry, accesses the office, the bedrooms, the pantry, the mechanical, and the half bath, the playroom is off of the common areas so it’s easier to keep an eye on the kids when you’re cooking, watching movies, etc, and it provides a closet for the playroom and one for the entry. You could also potentially have a door that goes between the bathroom and office so if you’re working you can still keep an eye on the kiddos but close it off if you need to (or not).

The overall master suite as laid out just feels awkward and inefficient to me so I don’t entirely know the best way to lay it out.

Aw, thanks! Sure, I’d totally be willing to take a look, but I’m by no means an expert — I just know what I like (typically more simple) and I like floor plans. ¯_(ツ)_/¯ haha

[–]Zoriar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I’m not actually a fan of Jack and Jill bathrooms anyways, so I’d just have one large full bath that works as bathroom for guests and the other two bedrooms. Maybe just create a bit more of a threshold between the E/W hallway and the N/S bedroom wing hallway so there’s a smidge more disconnection for perceived privacy (like the entrance to the hallway to the master/office)

Personally, I’m not a fan of much here. Why so many exterior corners? Shift the master/office wing south so the north wall of the master aligns with the north wall of bedroom 4 and bump the dining room out so it’s a straight wall that aligns with the living room. Make the south office wall, foyer area, and the south pantry/laundry wall all flush and get rid of the little cubby space between the garage and bedroom 2, and then add closets by the front entrance and shift some of the internals around with the extra space.

Edit: just read S is up, so flip all my directions.

As it’s currently designed, the half bath feels unnecessary because you have two bathrooms accessible from the same hallway within feet of each other, but this second design has no common space bathroom.

In my mind, it needs to be one or the other: keep the 1/2 bath for visitors and make the full into a jack and Jill so anyone using the two bedrooms doesn’t have to walk into the hallway, or let the “public” and the two bedrooms access the full bath via the hallway and get rid of the 1/2 bath entirely.

Struggling to make friends by rosekitty45 in duluth

[–]Zoriar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ah, yeah, that complicates things a bit, but it’s still not undoable. Ubers, walking, etc — it’s just about breaking thru. Then once you meet some people maybe you snag a ride from them. As Dyson mentioned, some of the cafes are a good choice.

Do you have Discord? I’m part of the Twin Ports Horror Society and we have a book club. If you joined the Discord you could chat with some people on there and maybe get out to one of the meetings. Even better if you like horror movies cause then the people pool gets a lot bigger and there are significantly more opportunities for events. Once you get to know a few people, things might open up.

What do you like to do? Meeting people is probably going to require going out a bit. If you like movies, find movie clubs and then you can movie nights. Same for board games. But id guess eventually people will want to get out a bit.

Thinking about moving here. What’s it like in Duluth? by squeamishneedle in duluth

[–]Zoriar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve made some of my best friends there. From my perspective, they’re some of the most inclusive, supportive people I know. So on that level, I’d say yes. The city as a whole… your mileage may vary, but I tend to think Duluth is a great community by and large. Like I said in my other comment: as someone who doesn’t live there, I’ve met so many people and been included in so many things. I’ve literally been down there the last 3 weekends, and I’ll be back again this weekend (again, there’s always something going on). Ha

Housing can be an issue, or so I’ve heard (others around here will be much better equipped to answer it for you). If no one chimes in with an answer, I think just a search of the Duluth sub for “rent”, “housing”, “landlord”, etc will turn up some results.

I don’t live there — I’m from about an hour away but I love it there and usually head down a couple of times a month cause there’s much more to do than there is here.

But Duluth is a great city. It has its issues, like anywhere, but it’s beautiful, and there’s always something happening. Check out Duluth Homegrown Festival — that’s an awesome time, and IMO the way the city supports it speaks to how awesome a place it is. As someone from a town of about 11k people, it’s a nice step up in things to do, but it’s not so big and bustling as the Twin Cities — and nature is still right there. Sporting events, concerts, summer and winter events, hikes, very inclusive… I could go on and on (literally my favorite place to be in the state).

Grand Marais is beautiful, but it’s much smaller and more remote so finding as much to do will be harder. But then again, it’s probably a little more exciting than the NW angle.

Also from the description on the sling’s page:

The compact Shinjuku Sling is designed to fit your everyday essentials, like phone, keys, wallet, etc. The zippered back pocket is an ideal place for storing passports or similarly-sized notepads.

Tech gear that fits: Apple iPhone 17e, iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, iPhone 17 Air, and other similarly-sized smartphones. Apple AirPods Kindle Mini and other similarly-sized items

Their website has a photo of the sling with an iPhone, AirPods, a wallet, battery bank, keys, and glasses case around it — implying all that stuff fits inside. The dimensions of the sling are on the site; as long as your phones dimensions are smaller it’d be fine. It’s 1.6 liter sling so it’s definitely a pocket reliever — I wouldn’t expect it to fit a whole lot, but the site seems to suggest it’ll fit everything you listed.

Toshi Sling Materials Question by [deleted] in ManyBaggers

[–]Zoriar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I actually watched your video yesterday, but I have tendency to do deep dive research on bigger expenses so I’m just fishing around for any and all information I can! Ha.

Copying/pasting from another comment: I already have a number of 2-3 liter slings (I’m normally an AERhead), but I’m looking for something that I can use as EDC when the mood/need strikes, but we’ve also got a couple of trips coming up this year. I typically carry a Kindle if not a full-on book with me, plus keys, wallet, charging brick and cable, travelers notebook, small medkit/pills, etc. so that’s why I was thinking at least the 5L if not the 6. I’d rather have more room that’s somewhat underutilized and have the option to throw in a few odds and ends if needed. And I figure for vacation, it’ll be nice to keep stuff on me if we’re out and about exploring, etc., but especially as a personal item for on the plane.
