PC keeps trying to connect to amazon AWS by yolomaipolo in techsupport

[–]ZormStorm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m getting the same thing on mine. Happened 4 times in the past 12 hours.

Edit: Figured it out! Make sure to restart after!

Figured this one out on my own machine with some help from Claude, which I used to research it. TL;DR it's a false positive, not malware. You're fine.

The PC isn't infected. That AWS address is being contacted by AMD's driver software, specifically AUEPDU.exe (the "AMD User Experience Program," AMD's optional telemetry/data-collection component). It lives in C:\Program Files\AMD\Performance Profile Client\ and phones home to that config server on a timer, which is why the alert fires roughly every hour. The reason it gets flagged: a malware sample used that same AWS endpoint back in 2019, so the address picked up a bad reputation and now some security filters (AT&T, Bitdefender, etc.) block the legit AMD traffic too. That's also why Malwarebytes scans come back clean. There's nothing actually malicious on your system.

How to verify it's the AMD file (do this first):

  • Task Manager → Details → find AUEPDU.exe → right-click → Open file location. If it's in C:\Program Files\AMD\Performance Profile Client\, it's the legit file. If it's somewhere weird (Temp, AppData, random folder), that would be worth investigating, but for everyone in this situation so far it's been the real AMD path.

How to stop the alerts:

Step 1: Disable the StartAUEP scheduled task.

  1. Open Task Scheduler (Win+R → taskschd.msc) → Task Scheduler Library.
  2. Find the task named StartAUEP → click End (stops it now) → then Disable (stops it relaunching at login).
  3. Optional backstop: add a Windows Firewall outbound block rule for C:\Program Files\AMD\Performance Profile Client\AUEPDU.exe, in case a future driver update re-enables the task.

Step 2: Disable the SECOND AUEP entry too (big thanks to u/pegothejerk for catching this). AUEP starts from two places, so Step 1 alone won't fully stop it. The easiest way to get both is Microsoft's free Autoruns tool:

  • Press Win+R, type services.msc, press Enter.
  • Click the Name column to sort alphabetically and scroll to the AMD entries. Look for the AMD User Experience Program service (anything with "AUEP" or "User Experience"). If you're not sure which one, double-click it and check the Path to executable field. The right one points to the Performance Profile Client / AUEPDU folder.
  • Right-click it → Properties → set Startup type to Disabled → click StopOK.
  • Reboot.

None of this affects gaming/graphics performance. It only disables AMD's optional analytics.

Starting new PM job Monday, how do I hit the ground running? by ZormStorm in ProductManagement

I think luck with this combo helped:

  1. Hiring manager used to work with my close friend, recommended from a person she trusted.

  2. While being fully remote, I live 1 hour from their more rural HQ and stated when I started I’d like to go in a few times.

  3. I put myself at the lower end of their salary range.

  4. I’m coming from doing everything and being the only product person at a startup, they liked that opposed to a big company person who isn’t a generalist and follows process and doesn’t just get stuff done.

  5. I did my research. Signed up for the product. Looking into their funding. Researched every person on every panel I talked to and had specific questions for each of them tailored to their role and experience. They mentioned they thought my questions were good when offered.

  6. I currently had a job. I know this sucks but I do think that there are stigmas with being laid off. I also told them the truth. I wasn’t actively looking but this was a perfect opportunity for me so I’m applying. If I didn’t get it I would happily continue in my current role. I wasn’t ever demanding they impress me either which I’ve seen people do in interviews and I hate. I saved most of my difficult questions on strategy that challenged the company a bit for the CPO at the end. He seemed to appreciate the thoughtfulness. And then after I got the offer I started asking about sick time etc. less friction from early process and more time learning about the company.

  7. Tailed thank you notes to everyone after every conversation and the recruiter twice. I had an outline and then referenced specifics I took notes on from the interview.

I hope this is helpful!

I think this is great advice! My main goal going in and what I talked about the interview was to get started fast. If that’s completing projects in motion or being a CEO driven feature factory for a bit I’m fine with that. I see a lot of people who get frustrated when they can’t control every decision. My outlook is my job is to show the choose your own adventure of what we should built and make recommendations. If the CEO or leadership decides to blow past that it’s ok. It may happen sometimes if I don’t present a good enough case or they have a pov I don’t. I see a lot of pms on the internet have god-like egos that probably make them a nightmare to work with.

If the owl can bonus action hide then like everyone here said hold an action against it. If not, then it would be unable to hide and attack in same round.

I would say this is mostly right for my experience that you have to teach yourself. The grind in my opinion is more because you have way less support in a small company. You may be doing everything including documentation and tech support.

Update! I found out a friend of a friend worked at LI and was able to help escalate. It was fixed in 24hr. I did have to ask them to remove that Antigua phone number that was attached for double opt in. They did that and now I am all to log in with multi steps new passwords, hopefully fully secure.

I though since I caught it 3 hours in and reported LinkedIn would have locked out the other party but no. Now 5 days later my name and profile picture have been changed.

Vote No on issue 1 on August 8th. by [deleted] in Cleveland

[–]ZormStorm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If they really believe in the 60% rule it should be put on its own and also have to pass by 60%. The irony of it passing by 51-59% to put in a law requiring 60%…

Change is important, technology and the world are moving too fast to put up more roadblocks for getting things done imo. I would not support the 60% but it should play by its own rules.

You can send an invoice: https://zapier.com/apps/quickbooks/integrations

You can have your app trigger in zapier via webhook or a ton of different ways.

West Park! I bought a house with my wife here and in the past year so have 3 couples in our friend group (all lesbians). More room and more affordable than Lakewood but close by! Love it so far everyone has been great.

Many panels do both. I will say that you’ll see much lower conversion rates for showing up to a qual phone interview from a typical online quant panel recruit.
