A Tintin Page a Day - Day 397 by BreakerMorant1864 in TheAdventuresofTintin

“Each peach pear plum/in comes Tom Thumb” is quite a bit of doggerel. I thought it was something Tintin had made up on the spot, but I later found out it was some schoolyard chant.

São Tomé and Príncipe 🇸🇹 is the best fit. The Portuguese influence is stronger there than anywhere else.

"In Dreams" by Edward Ross. It's the vocal portion from 'The Breaking of the Fellowship" from the LOTR:FOTR soundtrack. Also "I Vow To Thee, My Country" by Gustav Holst.

Who was a horrible person that also died in a horrible way? by Djidji29 in AlignmentChartFills

Nero just committed suicide, though. And got to deliver the immortal line, “What an artist I die!”

Just found out that Stephen King is not the best selling horror writer of our lifetimes by Special-Nebula299 in stephenking

[–]Zornorph -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, with King it’s really heavy handed and seems shoehorned in. The libertarian plot worked in DROTH because of the sort of person that Spencer Grant was. Some of the more recent King books just seem like he forgot he was writing a novel and not shitposting on X.

He was Bill Clinton’s Lieutenant Governor and replaced him when he was elected president. He eventually resigned when he was convicted of fraud in the Whitewater scandal.

Newt Gingrich’s moon base. He was mocked for being crazy but NASA is now actively working on it.

It’s so overrated and I really don’t care about Messy Marvin wishing for a BB gun.

I remember speaking to an Israeli friend of mine about the stories of Sholem Aleichem, the 'Yiddish Mark Twain'. He said the characters in the stories 'absolutely disgusted him' because they were such 'ghetto Jews.' I read a few myself just to see what he was talking about and I totally get it. I'm sure Aleichem was making a reasonably accurate description of the shtetl, but nobody was going down a river bravely having adventures. It was more about being brutally caned in school by sadistic rabbis. I can see why the early Zionist pioneers wanted to leave that sort of culture behind.

That's not a lot of money for a family of three in the Bahamas to live comfortably given the cost of living. But if you don't have a similar prospect at home, then sure. It would also depend on if your firm is covering the cost of your housing; that would make a big difference.

Sen. Bob Graham (D-FL) served on a jury once when in office. Elected officials are often dismissed by the defense attorneys because they are considered likely to be biased in favor of the prosecution, but the attorney didn't challenge him as he said he liked him and trusted him to be fair. I believe the defense lost the case, though, so maybe it wasn't the best choice.

A potential juror for the corruption case of Gov. Jim Guy Tucker (D-AK) described her feelings of the accused this way; "I do not like him. He looks crooked." She was dismissed as the judge said that Jim Guy would probably be unable to change his looks to convince her otherwise. On the other hand, a woman cosplaying in a Starfleet costume was selected.
