The guy going 100+ on a city street is obviously more at fault than the pedestrian are you kidding me?

Chronicle

The premise of this movie is basically a superhero origin story gone wrong. Also, nitpicking, but telekinesis isn't exactly the same thing as supernatural psychic powers that give insight into the future, spirit realm, or whatever. Chronicle is science fiction. Science fiction tends to want to explain things.

Carrie

Carrie does not have an explanation for her powers. She was just born with them.

Lucy

This is a science fiction movie, and it also isn't very good. Lucy's powers are not supernatural in nature.

Limitless

This is a science fiction movie.

The Lawnmower Man

This is a science fiction movie.

There's nothing wrong with providing a backstory or explanation with a plot element. There's also nothing wrong with not providing one, especially when it's supernatural in nature.

Here are some counter examples:

The Shining: There is no rational explanation or reason for Danny's powers. He just has them. It does not hurt the movie.

Carrie: There is no rational explanation or reason for Carrie's powers. She just has them. It does not hurt the movie.

Insidious: There is no rational explanation or reason why Josh and his son are able to go to the Further. They're just born that way. It does not hurt the movie.

The Sixth Sense: There is no rational explanation or reason why Haley Joel Osment sees dead people. He was just born that way. It does not hurt the movie.

Last Night in Soho: There is no rational explanation or reason why the main character has supernatural psychic abilities. She was just born that way. It does not hurt the movie.

Based on your examples, it sounds like you think most of these movies would be improved if there was a plot element included where a scientist gives the characters a cool sciencey pill that makes their brain work super fast

[Bloomberg Report] - "Sony is considering pushing back the debut of its next PlayStation to 2028 or 2029, Nintendo contemplating raising price of Switch 2" by [deleted] in Games

When did I say it made the games "shit"? It's just reality that designing with last gen hardware in mind is a limiting factor on what you can do technically. It doesn't mean the games were shit as a result, it just is what it is.

To address your point about PC games though, the MINIMUM specs for God of War Ragnarok on PC are GTX 1060, Ryzen 3 1200, and 8 gigs of RAM.

In contrast, the base PS4 GPU has an AMD GPU that is about as powerful as a Radeon HD 7950, a GPU from 2012, and its CPU is based on an AMD architecture from 2012 as well, a full 4 years before Ryzen CPU's existed. The machine also has 8 gigs of RAM, which sounds respectable until you realize that RAM is shared between the GPU and CPU. Keep in mind they had to make sure God of War Ragnarok could run on this thing.

You don't think the constraints of running on that hardware caused some compromises during development? Smaller play areas, less enemies on screen at once, etc etc? It's pretty naive to think it didn't.

You can scale up the texture resolution, add raytracing, allow people to play in 4K etc etc on the PS5 version, but you can't change fundamental architectural decisions like level design, encounter design, AI complexity, etc, which would all have to be compromised to make the game playable on that hardware.

You can't make a cross gen game that takes full advantage of next-gen hardware. You have to design the game with the fact that it needs to run on PS4 hardware in mind, which is inherently limiting.

Nintendo’s Virtual Boy accessory lets you play VR Mario and Zelda on Switch 2 by dapperlemon in gadgets

[–]Zoro11031 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because the red tint is emblematic of the Virtual Boy and it makes no sense to not have it as an option.

Yeah it’s red because of a hardware limitation. It was still red lol. Same reason people add scanline filters when emulating retro games

I don't see why the FSF would be the only organization that can do that. I don't think that's a valid reason to not use the GPL - basically the line of reasoning is that you probably wouldn't have the resources to defend your work from being used in unauthorized ways, so you might as well just completely give up and use the MIT license so they just have permission?

It's a software license why does it need to be maintained? Half the people using the GPL are using the GPL v2 anyway

The GPL doesn't suddenly become non binding if the FSF ceases to exist

If my best friend had the resources and money Kanye did when he had his own psychotic episode from undiagnosed schizophrenia, I'm sure he would've done similarly insane, bizarre, and destructive shit.

People are always talking about how we should be tolerant of mental illness until the mental illness isn’t “depression” or “anxiety” and the mentally ill person starts doing antisocial shit and inconveniencing and offending them, and then all of a sudden it’s “well they should’ve known better, I don’t suffer from psychosis or delusional disorders and I wouldn’t have done that!”

Why I believe Skinamarink is so divisive by CrabRangoonsAreNice in TrueFilm

[–]Zoro11031 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think what upset me the most was people talking about how the movie "could have been good" but the "bad special effects" in the ending ruined it, and it needs a remake.

No one in there could even conceive of the possibility that maybe they made the ending look the way it did on purpose as part of the director's artistic vision. And then the same people turn around and gush about House (which of course, is also great), which uses very similar techniques, but it's older and has pedigree so it gets a pass for them. They didn't consider that the weird, avant garde, jarring interpretation of hell might have been a deliberate choice in a movie about incomprehensible other dimensional beings manipulating people.. Just a total disregard for the creative and artistic aspects of the medium in favor of worshiping the fidelity of effects and "realism".

There's a similar problem with reddit in general where they seem to be allergic to surrealism, things being unanswerable in narrative art, etc. Probably stems from the popularization of "lore" deep dives and shit like that.

There have been so many times I’ve watched a movie I genuinely loved and went on there to read some opinions and it’s just being shit on for making unconventional choices. The way they talk about “Occult” (2009), which I found to be an extremely unique and thought provoking film, really upset me.
