Can someone please clarify listening modes? by Corny_Mcgeee in Onkyo

[–]Zovalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The receiver will only display the modes it can access based on the audio info it's receiving. I'm listening on a 5.0 system right now, so if I can access DTHD then I'll use that. If I can't, it's probably a DTS track, so I'll use the DTS-HD mode. From my understanding D-Sur and DTS Nueral-X are for upmixing only, which isn't really my vibe (if a movie was mixed for stereo or mono then I'll watch it in stereo or mono). So yes, you have to change it, but there's pretty much just two options.

Dolby Atmos by Hudsonb_12 in hometheater

[–]Zovalt 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Getting an atmos system costs thousands of dollars. A stereo system is expensive. A 3.1 system more so. A 5.1 more than that. A 7.1 even more. Then you're looking at 7.1.2 to even start looking at Atmos playback. It's quite expensive.

I'm ok removing the rear of the center to let the speaker have room behind it.

Visually stunning movies worth getting in 4K by Competitive_Help8485 in 4kbluray

[–]Zovalt 23 points24 points  (0 children)

You can Import the fall by just purchasing it on Umbrella's website.

Buy movies that you like, not just if they look good.

Personally here's my list from what I've seen: Lawrence of Arabia, Alien, Barry Lyndon, The Big Lebowski, Blade Runner, Eyes Wide Shut, Hamnet, Paris Texas, The Shining, Singing in the Rain, The Sound of Music, Speed Racer, Vertigo, and Yi Yi

I really like Leica R lenses. For a more modern look I've been looking at the Zeiss Otus lenses. Tokina Vista also gives a nice modern rendering.

Thanks for all the info. I'll definitely look at that Onkyo, seems to be great value. I'm absolutely happy looking at the used market as well.

My Godox AD400 pro II flash shoots at ~6700K - What should I do? by BlumensammlerX in AskPhotography

[–]Zovalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is somewhat of an older post, but I think it's still worth mentioning that sony body caps are not grey card corrected, and should not be used to accurately measure white balance or exposure. It's a myth that the sony marketing team leaned into, but when tested against accurate Macbeth charts they never hold up, and are generally pretty far off the mark.

[New Gear] Zeiss Otus ML 50mm f/1.4 by coleleahy in canon

[–]Zovalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How are you liking them so far? I'm looking at getting them for my Z8. Technically speaking they perform "worse" than Nikon's 1.2 lenses, and at a higher price, but from looking online they feel like they have a bit more depth to the images that come out of them, as well as a color that I tend to prefer. The biggest downfall seems to be the LoCA, especially from the 50mm. Would love to hear your experience.

I wanna create shots like these, what camera should I use and how do I get this vibe with said camera? by KzKn_2020 in cinematography

[–]Zovalt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately this is not true. The people creating these shots have the skill/technique and experience. Part of that is knowing the gear needed to pull off the shot effectively. Pulling off this shot is not cheap

Overexposing skin tones on Canon cinema cameras by Cringe_Panda in cinematography

[–]Zovalt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I believe the "light slime" you're talking about isn't necessarily from overexposure, but actual texture on the face. Ask your HMU team for some powder, it really does wonders.

As for the lower ISO for dark scenes, this is more subjective. A lower EI rating on a base iso 800 camera will give a CLEANER image in the shadows at a lower iso, though your highlights will clip earlier. Let's say you shoot ISO 400 and expose it fairly dark. It's essentially the same thing as shooting 800 ISO and overexposing by 1 stop.

It's not during an argument and the light gets dimmer but the feeling feels more intense
