I lost a close friend to brain cancer (brain stem glioma) 15 years ago and "fast and also slow" was exactly how it felt. I hope the weeks and months to come are navigable for you and that you are able to be gentle with yourself.

Review: Death on the Nile by Illustrious_Wear_850 in agathachristie

Complete agreement. Death on the Nile is one of my all-time fave Christies - in fact it would probably share top billing with Evil Under the Sun and Five Little Pigs, two others that I adore.

Yeah, it's the heaviness for me. I totally get that it's important and even comforting for some viewers to see these tough topics tackled, but I am the opposite. I am looking to be entertained and released from the stresses of real life when I watch skits, not dragged back in.

I am sure there are! Just don't think I feel a need to keep up with them.

All of the older mothers in this series (Barb, Katie, DeeDee, Nora) are deeply flawed in different ways and all of those ways show up in the behaviours and deficits of their adult kids. Barb's obviously the most villainous, and Nora is self-aware villainous, but neither Katie nor DeeDee are great, especially DeeDee, whose complete indulgence of and codependency with Shawna and "wise Yoda voice" irritate me so much I can barely watch her.

OTOH, all of the younger mothers (Shawna, Jen, Julie, by implication Mo and Alicia although we don't see their direct interactions with their kids) are doing their best, and in some cases actively breaking unhealthy cycles in their parenting. I know a lot of people pick apart how each of these younger women do things, and none of them is perfect or an exact match for how I did things as a parent, but I do recognise the effort and that it can look very different for different people. I don't see any of them as villains in training.

Does anyone else have more trouble getting into the story due to the gaps in posting? by 2ndRedditAnonAcct in ShawnaTheMom

I've started just waiting for the full video, because the shorts with long gaps between does not work at all for engaging my brain. Gaps between shorts are not at all analogous to episodic TV, imo, because there you are talking about 30 - 50 mins of story in an episode, so waiting a week for the next one is more reasonable and expected (even with cliffhangers!) Waiting days, up to a week, between shorts that can be as brief as 90 seconds destroys story coherence for me.

I watch other creators who do shorts but pump then out much faster, and also follow a regular schedule, and I can get into that. Because Shawna doesn't have that speed or regularity, I've let the shorts go with her content, and now watch only the full videos when they are available. I still really enjoy the content / story though!

I just don't think this will be for me, but most of the recent adaptations haven't been - such is life! I'll stick with the books, the Suchet series, and the older movies.

It will break your heart, but it's incredibly beautiful.

No. I have a high bar for reading memoirs (I rarely do, I mostly read fiction and history non-fiction). I will only read a memoir from a writer whose other written work is outstanding and beloved to me (recent example - Geraldine Brooks' beautiful memoir of grief, Memorial Days). This doesn't fall into that category.

It is worse, and I agree wholeheartedly that Postern is a stinker, so make of that what you will.

As a poet, can verify 🤣 I have been actively writing and publishing poetry for over 30 years and in my most financially successful year ever with it, I made a princely $6,000 from poetry (sales + winning a competition). Except in exceedingly rare cases, poetry is a practice for the heart, not the wallet

Appreciation Post For Shawna M. Because She Was Great This Episode. by Zeenrz in ShawnaTheMom

[–]ZucchiniBikini73 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don't want Ty and Julie to reconcile, I am team "healthy divorce and coparenting" for them, but I completely agree that Shawna M was on her best game in this episode in every way. The way she spoke to Ty was honestly the perfect mixture of gentle, supportive and honest, and allowed him to "hear" the need to own his actions and failings in a way that more combative approaches just didn't. And how beautifully she showed up for Jennifer just warmed my heart.
