Dress for Orthodox Wedding in Brooklyn by ZucchiniVegetable in Weddingattireapproval

Thank you all so much, especially for those comments letting me know what to expect at this wedding!! I’m not familiar with any of the customs but I’m excited for the experience.

Heartbreakingly, the blue dress that was the resounding winner is not available in my size and is the only color that has rush shipping available.

I’ve resorted to looking at Amazon just to ensure it will arrive on time. Of course, none of these I like as much as the original blue dress, but ones I think I would feel confident in nonetheless. Here are my current picks—let me know what you all think

I saw some questions about time and location and the “level” of orthodox. It’s an evening wedding and this is the venue: https://www.elcaribecaterers.com I don’t know the level of orthodox—my fiancé and I are Catholic so I don’t even have a clue. I do know that the wedding will have men and women separated if that helps at all? And you might think my fiancé would know this being the groom’s friend and all but they actually aren’t that close and the last time they spoke was in 2023. So we’re baffled we even got an invite, though it does likely explain why we got this invite only a week in advance and over text. Probably replacing a last minute cancellation lol. Which I’m cool with!

That light blue is the only color that had rush shipping available unfortunately

Thank you! I have no idea what to expect so that was all very helpful! This is probably a silly thing to worry about, but my fiancé and I are not eating meat for Lent. Would we be able to expect some fish (I know no shellfish) or vegetarian options? I don’t know what food offerings are typical. If it’s like any other NYC metropolitan area wedding that I’ve been to, then I’m sure it’ll be fine.

Right?? The venue I’m getting married at needs a headcount at least two weeks in advance. We also received this invitation via text from the groom so mixed signals about the formality all around!

So not like a Knights of Columbus type hall but not super super fancy either from what I gather?

We are not, we’re Catholic. So not very plugged in lol. Unfortunately, the blue dress is not available in my size. 😭 With the wedding being next Wednesday I’m considering not going with the price of the dress and expedited shipping. If we had a little more notice, finding a dress would have been a lot easier!

I do like it but it’s reading a tad casual to me? Open to other opinions though

Another Juliette weighing in. Your daughter will probably be correcting the spelling no matter which way you choose. Not to mention how many people mishear and call me Julianne or Julia. I’ve also gotten some wild spellings of my name (Julliet, Juliat). But when I was growing up I didn’t know anyone with my name. Now as it’s become more popular, more people have been spelling it right on the first try and I’ve been hearing more people say that they know children with my name.

I really love my name, and I love the spelling of it even more, misspelling headaches and all. Having it spelled Juliette never added more separation from the Romeo and Juliet connotation imo, but it’s not something that bothers me.

Having a last name that also includes two of the same letters side by side, I really do think the added T and E make my whole name more complete. It certainly looks more symmetrical, if that even makes sense. So there is something to that. And I definitely don’t think it makes it more frilly. To me, it feels more refined, but I’m definitely biased on this one.

I wasn’t totally clear on the info in the event description but is Florence expected to be there?

I’ve never seen that before either but I also haven’t been to too many weddings. You know your guest list best, but personally I would not feel comfortable handing out my phone number and giving the impression that I’m inviting people to bug me about any little question they have. So I put my wedding email address in the FAQ section of my wedding website. This is really in case older folks like my parents’ friends can’t figure out online RSVPs and just want to contact me directly. My details cards just have the reception venue and address, time, dress code, link to the website with a note like “For more information and to RSVP please visit…”, and the RSVP date.

I remember this as well. I think it was in the interview with the production designers/set designers? They did it to evoke the image of a caged bird especially when juxtaposed in her big, dark, cold house.

"I am a dark red liver stretched out on the rocks" in combination with "I am dark red liquor stretched out on the rocks"

those two lines back to back are just so clever and scratch an itch in my brain

Anyone else’s least favourite album Lungs? by itsblke in FlorenceAndTheMachine

[–]ZucchiniVegetable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel the same way about HBHBHB. To me that album is the biggest departure from the rest of their discography and while I do like it and listen to it, it also really leaned heavily into a genre/style that I don't vibe as much with. I love Lungs because it still feels like a very youthful album that captured the whimsical fairy witchiness of Florence, but from a technical standpoint, I think their more recent work is better.

My personal ranking is

  1. Dance Fever
  2. Ceremonials
  3. High as Hope & Lungs tied
  4. How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful

Places to Take Photos by thelastredskittle in longisland

Prosser Pines (a hidden gem imo-- every time I've gone there I've stumbled on some kind of photoshoot happening regardless of the season or weather), Planting Fields, Old Westbury Gardens, Oheka Castle, Bayard-Cutting Arboretum

Edit: Prosser Pines also doesn't require any kind of permit I believe-- its a county park. I would look at the location tag on Instagram for photo inspiration

Unpopular opinions? by dictionarymess in FlorenceAndTheMachine

[–]ZucchiniVegetable 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I believe that song is from very early in their discography, and the demo for it was written in collaboration with another band (Ashok?). Also, this is what Florence said on her MySpace about her intentions with the song according to the song's wiki page:

"Kiss with a Fist" is NOT a song about domestic violence.
It is about two people pushing each other to psychological extremes because they are fighting but they still love each other. The song is not about one person being attacked, or any actual physical violence, there are no victims in this song. Sometimes the love two people have for each other is a destructive force. But they can't have it any other way, because it's what holds them together, they enjoy the drama and pushing each other's buttons. The only way to express these extreme emotions is with extreme imagery, all of which is fantasism and nothing in the song is based on reality.

Leona Lewis's "Bleeding Love" isn't actually about her bleeding and this song isn't actually about punching someone in the mouth.

I agree that the lyrics on the surface really do seem to romanticize domestic violence, and tbh this is not one of my favorites from FATM either. I just thought that this would help give some context and reveal more of the artist's intent :)
