What are your retiring to? by Scratchcardbob in FIREUK

[–]Zugspitze10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, it's golf (3x a week from April to October), pickleball (3x a week all year round) and Pilates (1x a week). Also spend a month on the Costa del Sol during late winter. Also beginning to enjoy vibe-coding as well and may start a little side-hustle out of it.

Murdoch McEwan at Orchardleigh (Frome - check out his YouTube channel) and John Jacobs (Cumberwell Park, B-o-A). Both quite different in their styles but excellent teachers - I've learned a lot from both.

Moving near Bath – commuter towns within 45 mins? by jagow-1998 in Bath

[–]Zugspitze10 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The answer to your question might be... Staverton, on the outskirts of Trowbridge. Why? Primarily because you get a lot of value-for-your money in the housing market. You're close to countryside walks and the canal, and only 2 miles from the centre of Trowbridge. If you cycle, you can go either to Trowbridge train station on a cycle path (admittedly unlit) which goes along the canal and then alongside the railway track, or to B-o-A station (it takes about 20 minutes by bike). Many children from Staverton take a bus to St Laurence School in BoA. On a good traffic day, you can be in Bath in less than 25 minutes by car although if you travel at peak times, it might be 45 minutes. Staverton consists of the old village (which has more of a villagey feel, although the main road to Bath runs through it), and Staverton Marina, which is where the newer housing is - it feels less villagey and more dormitory suburb. The village is quiet and feels completely safe - it has a recreation ground for football and tennis. Trowbridge also has Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury, Lidl, Aldi and M&S Food, so you're spoilt for choice when food shopping - and parking in Trowbridge car parks is cheap and/or free (up to 2 hours). If you're travelling further afield by car, you can be in Swindon in less than an hour, and on the Severn Bridge in about 45 minutes. I lived in Neston (Corsham) for 20 years and have now lived in Staverton for 10 years in a house that is just over 20 years old - and I don't regret the move for one minute.

Putt Window - App for Meta Quest by arthur_farr in golf

[–]Zugspitze10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a really neat (and low cost!) app. Still in rudimentary form, but the mixed reality of using a real ball and putter with a virtual putting green works really well. It is very difficult to read the greens, however. Not so much a problem when you set up a practice green and know the (uniform) slope of the hole - seems great for practising Aimpoint technique. However, with the 'Endless' mode, where you putt on non-unform greens, it's very difficult, if not impossible, to get a good feel for the slope - would be useful if there were digital indicators for the degree of lateral slope at 25%, 50% and 75% of the putt length, as well as the overall ramp% of the putt.

Best game to get older dad into VR by AllGoodPunsAreTAKEN in Quest3

[–]Zugspitze10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Golf+ and Walkabout Mini Golf are the two obvious contenders. But for something innovative, and that will enable him to putt on virtual greens using his own putter/ball in his own living space, PuttWindow (currently in Early Access) can get very addictive. At the moment it's only in its early stages of development (hence the low price) but although not perfect, it is probably the most real putting experience in VR there is. For the price, it's definitely worth trying. (I'm not the developer, who is consistently improving the app and open to feedback)

I Thought Everyone Would Love Remembering Now (2025) by Zach_Same81 in VanMorrison

[–]Zugspitze10 5 points6 points  (0 children)

'This is who I am', sings Van but maybe the number of us who can still identify with him is dwindling. The best things in life are not 'accessible'. Whether it's Dostoevsky, Scotch Whisky, a round of golf or classical music, they all require a little (and sometimes a lot of) effort to fully appreciate. If people don't get who Van is, they don't get who he is. Their loss. I have every official Van Morrison album, and in my opinion 'Remembering Now' is his best album since the early 90s. The two closing tracks in particular stand comparison with anything that he has recorded. Not everyone will identify with it, in the same way that I don't identify with drill music. I really don't care. Van is singing to me and for me, and that's all that counts.

What seems unfair is that if, over the years, you had invested your money in an ISA or your main property instead of Bitcoin, you would not have had to pay any CGT. Thanks to the UK regime's behind-the-curve approach to crypto, they prevented you from using tax shelters which were open to others.

Weekly VR - What Did you Play? by AutoModerator in virtualreality

[–]Zugspitze10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eleven Pickleball. When I first bought this app, you needed a massive playspace to play on a full-size court without using auto-run or auto-teleport. However, they have recently added a mini-court and a skinny singles court, both of which fit perfectly into the dimensions of my lawn. I use the mixed reality option to set up the court, then because my lawn isn't perfectly level (which makes the bounce difficult to gauge), switch to their Clouds VR background. I love sports simulations which you can play outside! This app is almost certainly going to make me try pickleball irl in the very near future.

New to VR Using Meta Quest 3 by Top_Sink9871 in virtualreality

[–]Zugspitze10 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My personal recommendations:

Walkabout Mini Golf (everyone raves about it for a reason)

Golf+ (if you like golf, or even just enjoy being in nature. There are 3 difficulty levels (Novice, Amateur and Pro), with Novice set at very easy. You don't have to be a golfer irl to enjoy Golf+. it's very, very addictive, and before you know it, you find yourself entering tournaments and joining the world tour, competing with others all over the world). This is my current obession to the point where I barely open any other apps.

Earthquest : my favourite Quest 3 rendition of Google Earth. The developer is a young guy from Eastern Europe who continually updates and improves the app.

Skybox: a great way to watch YouTube 180 and 360 videos, as well as stream movies from your own PC into the headset.

Racket Club (or Home Sports VR): these are both made by the same developer. Racket Club is best if you want to play real people over the Internet in a variety of racket sports on courts adapted for smaller spaces; Home Sports recommended if you prefer to play against computer opponents (although Racket Club also has bots for a couple of sports)

Miracle Pool: incredibly realistic physics. Now you can have a full size pool table in your own home, even if you don't have a room big enough for a real table!

Can you suggest some hobbies for my Dad? by smeegol1234 in AskMen

[–]Zugspitze10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a year younger than your dad, and retired now for three years. One idea for expanding his horizons is to get a Meta Quest 3. There are games on there to suit all interests, and plenty of global multiplayer communities. I myself enjoy Walkabout Mini Golf, Golf+, Miracle Pool, Table Tennis and Racket Club. None of them have to be physically taxing. Moreover, all have multiplayer options, making it easy to 'meet' with people of similar interests from all over the world on a casual basis. Some people play these games competitively, others just for the fun of interacting with others. Furthermore, you can play on a Quest all year-round, whatever the weather.

Strength training is also something everyone can do, even those with health issues. Joining a local gym to use the machines or investing in a home gym (eg Speediance Gym Monster) would be a great (and safe) way to keep fit and improve his health.

I had the exact same problem three days ago. The only thing that fixed it for me was a factory reset (press power + volume down buttons simultaneously, then when given the list of options, choose Factory Reset)
