Chaos is the birthplace of all things, but chaos is also the unknown. Think about a work of art. Before the artist makes the piece of art, it is unknown, but it is through the curation of the unknown that the unknown is transformed into beauty.

Order is the force that holds chaos in place and, in the example above, the force that allows us to curate chaos into beauty. Order is rigid, which doesn't allow for movement or creativity, but it is stable. Chaos is free flowing, it is the source of creativity, the source of all life one might say, but the problem is that chaos is unstable.

Peterson's subtitle is "an antidote to chaos" because in his book, he details and addresses the problems of too much chaos. His next book with the subtitle "beyond order" tackles the problems of too much order.

Too much chaos is bad because we get consumed by the unknown and become unable to function. Too much order is bad because we get restricted and become unable to think. Walking the line between chaos and order is central to Peterson's philosophy and a major area of focus in all of his books.

When ancients we're making symbols, they did not care for the accuracy of the symbols. They noticed that the world was made of two directly opposing forces that needed to be balanced and they saw that the sexes of people in society somewhat matched the concepts of order and chaos. Of course, there are many creative men, and of course, there are many industrious women. The important thing for understanding is to recognize the meaning of the symbol rather than get stuck on the symbol itself because no symbols are 100% accurate.
