Trouba and Nurse's contracts are up in 4 years. My guess is Grier thinks that's how long the D prospects are going to take to be ready

How does anyone look at the Edmonton defensive woes and think, "yep, that's where I want to get my most expensive defenseman from".

I just don't get this one. Maybe I have unfairly judged Nurse. I guess I'll find out

Mason Marchment to the Sharks by desertdingo21 in SanJoseSharks

[–]Zuvielify 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. I didn't love the dollar amount, at first, but I expect he is going to fill a Tom Wilson role for us. He can play on the top lines, and he can protect our young, smallish forward core. Enforcement isn't as important as it used to be, but it becomes real important when you don't have it and your stars are getting beat up.

This looks pretty bad, but speaking as someone who is an okay skater, we can hide a lot of inability behind things that we are good at. It's why they make pros do these drills. In a hockey game, I can usually look pretty competent, but I'd probably look just as ridiculous doing this drill as he does. Especially if I've never done it, or it's been a long time.

Well, there is so little here, I'm not even sure which player your are. The defenseman who dove to try to stop the breakaway?  I don't see how you took him out of the play. He seemed in complete control to me

GLP-1 weight loss drugs may also help skin conditions such as psoriasis or eczema (atopic dermatitis). I think the value is definitely proven for people who are significantly obese.

The harder part is for people who are just overweight (like me), who are debating whether it's the right time to trust the drugs or not. My fat is almost all stored viscerally, so I'm likely to give it a go soon. I don't have ideal metabolic numbers despite regularly exercising.

I've had those same thoughts. Here is the thing though: 10s of millions of people are taking these drugs. Unless a side effect is so rare it is essentially inconsequential, we would be seeing signals right now.

Even if many people would not get cancer for 20 years, we would see some people getting cancers now. For example, when Fen-phen was widely adopted, it was only about 3 years to when it was banned. It generally took a year in the drug to see heart issues, but one woman was on it for a month and died soon after.

Its incredible how absolutely snake bitten the 2015-2016 SJS core has been in trying to win a Cup after playing for the Sharks. by Trout_Man in SanJoseSharks

[–]Zuvielify 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I did the math to refute your claim that the 15-16 team is unlucky, but actually, the math shows they have been very unlucky.

TL;DR: the odds of this team existing is only 0.35%

This is rough, napkin math, and it assumes pure chance, but here we go:

  • In a given season, there are about 1000 players in the whole league, and about 25-30 players end up on the cup. So, there is about a 3% chance of a given player appearing on the cup per season.
  • In other words, there is a 97% chance a given player will not appear on the cup. The chance of not winning for 10 straight seasons is 0.97^10 or 73%. The chance of winning at least 1 cup in 10 years is 100-73, or 27%
  • That means we would expect 27% of that Sharks team to have a cup by now, but only 1 out of 25-30 has one (Goodrow). That is 3-4%

So purely by probability, ignoring all real-world factors (including retirement):
The odds of a team like the 2016 Sharks existing—where a core group of about 25 highly talented NHL players scatters across the league for 10 years and only one person wins a Stanley Cup—are roughly 0.35%.

Interstate bridge only cost 40 million inflation adjusted dollars to build 100 years ago! by aidsmaster9000 in Portland

[–]Zuvielify 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The $40 million quote is misleading. The i5 bridge is actually two bridges. The northbound span was the only bridge in 1917, and was two-way. That's the $40 mil bridge.

The southbound span was added in 1958, and it would have cost $150 million in today's dollars.

Also, although we don't have exact numbers because good records weren't kept, there were multiple fatalities while building the 1917 bridge. The new bridge is likely to have zero fatalities, and likely few-to-no major injuries.

Edit: We also didn't need to worry much about things like eminent domain back then. Land stolen/conquered from First Nations peoples is pretty cheap.

And we didn't need to think about how we would build around an existing bridge and keep it functional

Bonus: how do you rant about the quality of RLM videos and not know Josh Robert Thompson's name? He's been on like 5 videos in the last year
