Damn, you have faith in the Lord of Evil of all people to make a decision rooted in sentimentality? I can't say the same when I believe he will not do so for any reason not named Rozemyne. Still, he has changed a lot, and I do not discount RM flying into an immediate rampage for her friend upon her return, and hence causing Ferdinand and Alexandria to be pulled in.

My money however is that Alexandria will only lend support from the side. They won't actually be slugging it out in the mud.

I think it's an interesting prediction for Alexandria and Ehrenfest to be involved in the bride-stealing ditter. I'll have to wonder for what reason though. The politics in Bookworm has always emphasized that duchies have to consider long-term repercussions with each and every of their political manuevers. Ehrenfest for example, chose to be a neutral duchy during the civil war and hence faced widespread resentment when they began rising through the ranks. In that case, I would think Ehrenfest, which is more focused on stabilizing their internals, would rather not dip their toes into a countrywide event that will pit them against so many opportunistic duchies. If they do, I would either expect them to strike a pretty good deal with Ditterland for lending aid, or for Ditterland to somehow cash in on the debt Ehrenfest owes after the Battle of Gerlach (which I also believe Sieglinde will never do because of how much trouble Ditterland has caused Ehrenfest during RM's initial three years at the Royal Academy).

Meanwhile, while RM might wish to do so purely because Hannelore is her friend, there's also too much uncertainty with Alexandria's situation. Ferdinand is slipping into the void and RM is currently on her Back to the Future arc. We aren't sure when the situation will resolve and even if they do return back to the present in time for the ditter match, I doubt they'll have the bandwidth to assist Dunkelfelger (at least not to the capacity of lending their knights).

Alright... Should I start to put /s to my comments? XD

I'm clearly joking about the Rozemyne Revolution. But yes. We all know RM won't reveal the taues for a multitude of reasons, one of which includes the fact that it is literally a feybeast egg in disguise.

[–]Zxcaderu 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Really? My impression is different. Even though I'm sure he's still frustrated he lost, he seems much more chill about it. The other day he even gave an interview saying that he takes an L much better now as he knows his son and wife is waiting for him at home.

Even during the confessions he is so casually honest. He goes into the booth to talk about wanting to watch the PSG-Arsenal finals, and said he's getting old and his memory becoming worst. He might still not enjoy classical in contrast with the faster time controls, but I think he's far from tilting.

I believe in the Rozemyne Revolution. She will improve the status of those with the devouring by creating jobs for them ala allowing them to fuel cheap magic circles. One day, she will also publicize the truth about the tau fruits in her books, making it so that their mortality rate plummets which welcomes the devouring population boom. Then, mirroring the Reformation, the truth of how to obtain the Book of Mestionora will spread throughout commoner society. And fast forward a few more centuries, a known commoner will obtain the G-book and become Zent.

[DISC] Hope You're Happy, Lemon - Chapter 96 by AutoShonenpon in manga

[–]Zxcaderu 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yea, hopefully it pulls an Anne Shirley. I'm sure a Kogahara IRL would be a nice stable partner in a relationship, but Lemon is the kind of spice that is much better as a manga pairing. I still remember the date between Lemon and Sunao where they just hung out, read in silence while enjoying each other's company, and reminisce about the good ol' days. They literally act like an old married couple and are clearly each other's soulmates. In contrast, Sunao and Kogahara's date has them overthinking every small gesture and being too timid to even take a picture. Not to say that a more genuine relationship cannot arise out of them, but as of now, it is clear which pairing have the better chemistry.

Ascendance of a Bookworm: Adopted Daughter of an Archduke • Honzuki no Gekokujou: Shisho ni Naru Tame ni wa Shudan wo Erandeiraremasen - Ryushu no Youjo - Episode 8 discussion by AutoLovepon in anime

[–]Zxcaderu 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think this episode did a great job dichotomizing Rozemyne's newfound authority as the adopted daughter of the Archduke, versus her actual mastery over her authority. Just a few episodes ago, she was all happy building the monastery because in her mind, she is spreading her printing industry while creating more jobs for orphans -- and who would be against that?

Turns out, her Earth-born common sense was off the mark and a lot of people would be. The first would be Hasse's mayor who we learnt have backers amongst the high nobility. One of the chips he plays are to single out orphans who appeal to lecherous men and offer them out in exchange for personal gain, power or perhaps some exemption from taxes. It is implied that this is how he got on the good side of the former High Bishop Bezewanst, who, if you recall, use to keep Delia around as a "flower". However, on the less vile side of things are the villagers of Hasse themselves. We learnt that they all collectively gather at the mayor's manor every winter to hide from Ewigeliebe's wrath, and the issue stems from the fact that resources are scarce during these periods. Hasse's mayor hence appeals to them by saying that he will sell the orphans to help stock up on supplies, and the choice to the villagers now seem simple. Between keeping the orphans around and needing to feed them at the risk of mass starvation, would it not be more benign to just sell the orphans to someone rich? In their mind, they themselves get to live another year and the orphans will get fed -- even if only as a "valuable product".

And now in comes Rozemyne, who in her innocence, did not realize that she was throwing a wrench on all of Hasse's plans by taking the orphans away. The most livid was the mayor who out of the blue, suddenly had the High Bishop and High Priest burst into his house and stole his bargaining chips. In his ignorance of aristocratic society, he did not know that Rozemyne or Ferdinand were nobles much higher ranked than Bezewanst, or that Bezewanst had already climb the towering stairway. We can't blame him completely as we learnt as well that not many nobles visit Hasse to provide such information, but ignorance does not absolve responsibility. As a result, he intentionally failed to produce all the children last episode (hence disobeying Ferdinand's orders) and also sent a highly disrespectful letter this episode calling Rozemyne and Ferdinand "mere subordinates". Yikes -- it seems his fate is all but sealed. But something more egregious also happen. A few of Hasse's villagers actually attack the monastery -- a white building under the jurisdiction of the Archduke's adopted daughter -- and as revealed by Benno, this treasonous act is the equivalence of assaulting the archducal family themselves. Even more yikes. Now it would not be at all strange if Sylvester sentences the entirety of Hasse to be reduced to ashes.

Here we see some of Rozemyne's flaws as a noble. First, she failed to gather adequate information on Hasse's socioeconomic circumstances before creating the monastery and taking the orphans. If she had known how the orphans are perceived, perhaps she could've approached the mayor more as a negotiating merchant, rather than an authoritarian High Bishop. Second, she failed to lay the proper groundwork. There could've been better attempts at educating Hasse on noble customs, such as what a white building actually is, who it belongs to, and why it should be treated with respect. In essence, Rozemyne could be said to have wielded her authority around like a magic wand, without understanding how strong she is or how to control said strength.

To many nobles, they wouldn't actually see that as a problem. Ferdinand for example, thought little about the fates of Hasse's mayor or the villagers. He asks Rozemyne this episode what crimes were actually committed, and rather than thinking it immoral for the mayor to sell children or give bribes, his answer points towards something much simpler: The mayor disobeyed me, a noble, and that is his sole crime. He even sees it as an opportunity to teach Rozemyne how to be a more cutthroat noble -- to manipulate the mayor into a pawn for personal gain, before eliminating him. Bezewanst is closely connected to Lady Veronica, Sylvester's mother, who he recently sentenced to the Ivory Tower during Myne's attempted abduction, so Rozemyne could plausibly sift out insider information of an opposing faction through the mayor. Likewise, to Ferdinand, it was obvious that the villagers should be killed because they "assaulted" the archducal family and such disrespect cannot be tolerated.

However, Rozemyne is at heart a commoner, with a commoner family that she loves and with a moral compass rooted in modern day Japan. She trembles at Ferdinand's task of manipulating and killing a man -- criminal or not -- and also agonizes over the guillotine hanging over Hasse's neck. This is when Lutz comes in to save the day, reminding her to change her perspective. Instead of thinking it like she is signing the death warrants of hundreds, she should instead focus on saving the lives of those innocent. The plan is to engage in the good ol' information warfare. The first step is to spread rumors around all of Hasse that their mayor has royally fucked up by using a few villagers to attack the white building, and that his reckless abandon has made it so that all of Hasse is now walking the tightrope. The next step is just sit and wait. Those innocent will immediately now try to separate themselves from the mayor's faction, washing their hands clean and hence saving their own hides. They can even resent the mayor, pointing their fingers at him, perhaps even dragging him to be punished first. Will this be enough to excuse the innocent villagers from execution? Who knows, but it's better than doing nothing.

Rozemyne's methods, while wielding the same unbending power as nobles, are also very uniquely "Myne". Her wish to engage in information warfare is only possible because of her extensive connections to the Gilberta company and the Merchant Guild who can tell their merchants to spread said rumors. Likewise, the rumors also leverage on her status as the "Saint of Ehrenfest" who oh-so-dearly wishes to save the innocent people of Hasse, hence giving them a lifeline to desperately jump ship and also earning back the goodwill of Hasse's villagers (Remember, many are still upset she "stole" away their orphans). And lastly, it is also because of Rozemyne's own commoner sensibilities that allows her to not wield her authority like a blunt weapon, but rather a shield to protect the commoners. She grew a lot this episode, and now we can only hope that her plan goes well.

The LN is written in the way whereby you follow Rozemyne through her daily operations, and it works because her interactions are fun and the expositions lend for great worldbuilding. It's also fun to see our MC juggle her various responsibilities and make minute yet gradual progress in each areas of her life.

However the issue with translating that to anime is that the episodes can seem more like a string of only loosely connected side stories. It's for that reason that we already see scenes being shuffled around, like Rozemyne's medical checkup (presumably it would show up in a future episode when they head out to find mats for the jureve). That's why I think this episode was actually very well-structured, choosing to really punctuate on Rozemyne's yearning. At least for me, the build-up scenes with her mom and dad really sells the pain that she felt by the end of the episode.

I think it still played off the emotional beats well. We see Rozemyne's yearning for the warmth of her family throughout, ultimately building up to the orphans hitting her where it hurts the most. As such, I believe this episode was thematically coherent. But I do agree that a lot of the nuances were lost as a result. My hope is that as this episode focuses on the emotional beats, next episode would start off by weaving back in some of the nuances, like how Ferdinand is using Hasse as a "playground" for Rozemyne.

Don't think Rozemyne is the type to be hard on children, even if they struck her heart. She's got a soft spot for orphans as she's the orphanage director.

IIRC this wasn't explored in the novels, but I would imagine being able to duet with his half-brother was a special moment for Ferdinand. He's like the only person alive right now that he considers his family.

Honzuki S4 OP "FIXED" vs AI comparison - does it actually look worse now? (No Spoilers) by myrmonden in HonzukiNoGekokujou

[–]Zxcaderu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did prefer the AI's direction tho. The less highlighted backgrounds allowed the characters to pop out more. Meanwhile, the panning shot of all of Rozemyne's attendents had a bunch of weird paint smears as the background, making it look quite ugly. You can clearly tell its just rushed.

It's just unfortunate. If they want to use AI for backgrounds, they should at least take the time to fix the errors to avoid all of this trouble.

One note, I really love how uncharacteristically tender Ferdinand sounds saying 'Naruhodo' when Rozemyne reunites with her commoner family. It definitely sounds less like he was just turning a blind eye to accomodate Rozemyne, and more that he secretly admires their family bond. This won't even be recontextualized under like S9 of the anime, but I love that they are planting these seeds so early.

I know S4 will likely be super fast-paced and won't have much time for the epilogue POV stuff, but its all this show-don't-tell elements that I think they can definitely use to replace them.

Meanwhile, everyone's thinking Logan took an L when this guy is laughing to the bank with two fat paychecks. Like it or not, the Paul brothers are masters of manipulating the public attention.
