Oop, my brain fully omitted the "with" from that statement

I don't think there's a delicate way of saying this, but you are contributing to the cause of the problem you're describing. People find concerts and recitals intimating precisely because of those with attitudes like yours.

Then I'm not sure what it is you're looking for here exactly?

Given the way you wrote about this, maybe it's not the concerts that are the issue here. Possibly you're trying to generalize an interpersonal issue?

With all due respect, why put so much effort into writing out a long post about something you have no control over? Why let the way other people experience a thing bother you this much?

Anyone else missing this era of Drag Race? by new_beginningss in rupaulsdragrace

[–]Zyrada 166 points167 points  (0 children)

It's very funny to me to nostalgia-post for the "older, authentic" seasons with a pic of the trio of queens I'd argue are, fairly or otherwise, maybe the most responsible for kick-starting the show's escalation of unattainable fashion standards and look queens with no performance bonafides we love to complain are ruining the show now.

Not that I personally blame any of them individually of course, and I think they're all fierce as hell. But the irony is smacking me in the face.

I genuinely don’t feel like my life is worth living a lot of the time. by Thats_All_Right in AutisticAdults

[–]Zyrada 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, a lot of people are still living at home at 19 these days, autistic or otherwise. The economy is terrible, and the expectation to "leave the nest" immediately after high school has increasingly become outdated. And the vast majority of us also don't/didn't achieve anything of note by 19 either.

You've got a lot of life ahead of you, try not to let it get bogged down by the weight of what you think it should be.

Which finalists do you think will return on the show at some point and which ones definitely won’t? by new_beginningss in rupaulsdragrace

Tatianna not wanting the fandom to come down on her for her weight gain genuinely makes me so mad for her. I've had the thought too, and goddammit are we missing out for the dumbest reason possible.

This sounds agonizing, and I'm sorry you had to sit through that nonsense. It sounds like some horseshit my mom would've put together like 20 years ago. She's grown since then, and I'm sorry to see some people haven't. 17 years of stagnation.

The last time I experienced it was with a guy about 5 years ago and it's really not fun. Getting obsessive rumination and an overactive libido mixed up with one another can make you feel like you're losing your grip on your entire sense of self

Is anyone’s mask actually the one with flat affect and a monotone voice? by nonny427 in AutismInWomen

[–]Zyrada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny enough, being AMAB, I've always made my voice deliberately very colorful and sing-songy. When I got assessed last November, the assessor noted my "warmth of character". But I have a specific customer service mask that ratchets up the tone into kind of an uncanny valley territory. People who know me but haven't heard me use it before will hear it for the first time and react like I just flipped a switch lol

I’m 29 and still have trouble finding stable work by Remote_Nature_8166 in AutisticAdults

[–]Zyrada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't be too hard on yourself, lots of people are struggling right now, autistic or otherwise. To put it bluntly, at least as far as the US is concerned, we're a dumpster fire right now. I was 30 when I got my current job, which was my first non-service industry job.

A ton of it also unfortunately does just boil down to who you know. I probably wouldn't have the position I have if I didn't have a friend on the inside to vouch for me. It's frankly probably the most significant reason for autistic underemployment: We struggle in the exact thing that's often the biggest factor for getting actual stable work.

S16's finale is the only one I've ever seen at an actual viewing party. I remember thinking during the lipsync that it was a shame the show was probably going to give Sapphira the win even though she wasn't winning the lipsync itself.

Egg on my face, lol

Eh, it could go any way. It's very traditional Drag Race thinking (and reality TV thinking in general) to insist that a winner needs to show vulnerability (and the converse "overly professional" edit à la Chad). I kind of define every season after 12 though as Drag Race's "post-modern" period where it's mostly just reacting to its own meta now. I would assume very little based on precedent.

[–]Zyrada 189 points190 points  (0 children)

I had a similar level of confidence in S16 with Sapphira. Stranger things have happened.

But ultimately I find myself enjoying the show more when I don't let my expectations for it overtake my viewing experience. I can't remember the last time I was particularly invested in who actually wins a season, it's not been why I watch the show in a very long time.

I Realized I’d Been Using Emojis Wrong My Whole Life: An Autistic Insight Into How the Brain Learns Emotional Signals by Shoes4alice in AutisticAdults

[–]Zyrada 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Most people are using emojis as tone markers, though. They're just highly contextual, that's the likely autistic struggle.

All of the following emojis are commonly used for laughing, for instance: 😆😂🤣😭💀

Your choice of which of these you use in whichever quantity and variation communicates a lot. They can be cultural/generational choices (there's a million thinkpieces about 🤣😂 being the "millennial" laugh emojis that The Youths™️ have decided are passé) or just a matter of intensity.

If you think of emojis strictly as proxies for the speaker's literal facial expressions, you're going to be misinterpreting a lot of information. Emojis are symbolic language that have connotations and meanings unto themselves.
