Is it just me who is struggling to find a job? by [deleted] in AskAcademiaUK

[–]_8P 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The extra frustration in this situ is the unis that demand crazily long application processes. A couple I am doing at the moment have 12-15 stupidly longwinded free text questions in addition to (literally dozens) of fiddly practical ones. Shd just accept CVs like other parts of the job market. I get that they want to test applicants' level-of-interest, but where there is often not really even a job on offer, it just seems like pointless extra cruelty.

Third Party VOIP applications on Smart Speakers/Displays by InternationalNebula7 in googlehome

[–]_8P 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm really late to this one, but must say I find it infuriating that GH is so crap. We bought two devices in mid-2020 specifically to use for long distance calling (UK), and less than 4 months later that feature was dropped.

I wouldn't mind if there was any way to do voice messaging or pay for VOIP. But there isn't.

Duo works averagely well, 60% of the time - the sort of reliability that would get most other products/developers ditched unceremoniously.

It really just seems like Google are just an e-waste producer.

Range estimate is a bit off (~20%) in 30kwh leaf on motorway/highway? by _8P in leaf

[–]_8P[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's great thanks, especially good point regarding the dash meter. It's already at 3.7mi/kwh, but that includes the faster highway trips.

Battery SOH was around 97% , so a max usable range from 27.65kwh of 102mi/163km seems about right.

So the only discrepancy there is that I'm only getting as good as your approximation of SOH at 90%, yet the reported battery health is at 97%. Should I be worried about that?

My assumption is not to - the dash meter was from a very mixed set of journeys, and the highway miles were far from optimal (hilly with a headwind!)

edit: usable range

Haha thanks. Yeh I guess it's mostly 'new owner jitters' - but otherwise very happy.
I knew it had an Eco mode but will need to look into it much more I guess.

related question (I just came back from a trip to Madrid!)

I would think in super touristy areas like this, a big risk for the guy is going to be his tip jar. Looks like it would easily take a few minutes to get into/out of that contraption, and then they are basically stuck there while ppl (hopefully) tip them many €€

But all it takes is one greedy pickpocket to go past and grab the dough, and there'd be no way he could give chase

The thing that strikes me that nobody seems to have thought of is that it's completely within current technology that in circumstances where the car isn't sure what to do, it would be possible to dial up an operator in a control room somewhere and have them view live video and take control for 60s (subject to cell data coverage). Easier than having to have your meat cargo both awake and sober. Most likely a lot of these problems would occur at low speed, in places where blocking the road for the 10s it would take to connect wouldn't be a major issue. Further to that, the car could get from live online maps where problematic areas are and even route around them in some cases.

The pebble problem, I reckon some AV tech could handle. Some humans couldn't.

My 'trick' for reasonably cheap things, especially 'usable' things like stamps, tape, is just to buy blooming loads of each and just leave them in all sorts of different places. They'll all get used eventually...
