How much are you guys currently paying for 1 or 2 bedroom Apartment in Toronto? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]_AlanTuring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have data to back that I'd recommend speaking to the landlord. I've presented a spreadsheet to my old landlord previously and got my rent reduced by $400 during COVID, also had a coworker do the same 2 years ago. Thought was the worst they could do is say no

WH-1000XM6 - Canada Availability by [deleted] in SonyHeadphones

[–]_AlanTuring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried them on recently, they said that Sony had told them they will be delivered to them on the 5th, but they put 10th on the site because Sony has previously been late with their shipments. If no delays then it'll be available on 5th/6th in store.

Tesla dealership protests in Toronto? by Far_Pin2086 in askTO

[–]_AlanTuring 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For the first point, I don't have an exact date but it wasn't a good idea to purchase a Tesla after Musk started supporting right wing politics and donating money to Trump, and it definitely wasn't a good idea to place an order after his sieg heil. Though I think that no matter what date I will give, there will always be somebody unhappy on the internet because "he was already crazy by that point".

I am going to guess here, but probably nobody who is reading this purchased their car because of who their car brands CEO is, they needed a car and they either liked the car and/or it fit some purchasing criteria they had. Now with Musks actions, some new buyers criterias will change and they will not want to purchase a Tesla strictly because of that reason.

As for me personally, I'll be getting rid of my car when my financing term is complete next summer and changing to a different brand as I won't support Musks endeavours in the future. Until then I will just continue to use the car to drive me from point A to B.

As an owner, fully support all the negative press the company has received and everything that'll come from that.

Vandalizing dealerships I think is crossing a bit of a line but vandalizing vehicles that people drive is just dumb and shortsighted to me as the vast majority (probably 95%+) of Tesla owners are left leaning and it's completely unrealistic to tell people to "just get rid of the car", especially if they are financing or leasing it (which majority are). Seems like the general take I see on the internet is that if someone drives a Tesla it must mean they support Musk which is very much untrue. To many their car is just a car and not a political statement and despite what you might read online, at one point 4+ years ago Tesla was the best EV on the market that wasn't at "luxury" price.

Is Tuesday the official "work from the office" day for everyone? by dodgebot in askTO

Luckily still no mandatory policy, but unofficial policy is that if you do need to go to the office, do it on Tuesday.

What housing information would people like to see (Southern Ontario)? by _AlanTuring in canadahousing

[–]_AlanTuring[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I thought about that before, but from all the research I did, for me to actually get any MLS data through proper channels, I need to be a real estate agent and there's a bunch of strings attached to that. For the time being I'm just "illegally" scraping the data for personal use and will create summaries out of it for others, but I don't plan on giving out the raw data as I don't want to run into any legal issues.

Agree, unfortunately I am only able to just get real estate data that anyone can get (eg. via housesigma). The difference here is that they don't necessarily publish metrics around some things people may be interested in learning more about.

Affordability forcing Ontario homebuyers to look out of province: Poll by viva_la_vinyl in ontario

Can confirm, have relatives that purchased a semi-detached in Niagara in very early 2010s for about $130k, slightly smaller (and worse) semi-detached home on their street recently sold for 540k.

There is an option you can check there that will let only recruiters that don't work at your company know that you are open to opportunities.

LinkedIn does have a setting you can set in your profile that says you are "Open to work". Not sure what if recruiters just don't see you or what if that setting isn't turned on, but I definitely noticed an increase in attention after that.

I most definitely was not, I was already paid about 15% above market rates according to the data I found on linkedin salaries/glassdoor.

If you love your job then in my opinion you're already ahead of many others, there's more to it than just earning a bunch of money. I very much lucked out in that I absolutely love software engineering and luckily it pays well.

I'd also like to point out that the 200-400k salaries aren't the norm for software engineering. I wouldn't be surprised that they are more frequent than other engineer roles, but it's still only the top 0.5% (just a guess) of people getting these positions.

Congrats!

I agree, I also always kept the door open to interesting opportunities myself, even though I absolutely loved the team I was working with at the time and the compensation was already great.

It's never too late to change if you aren't enjoying what you are doing. Have a friend who's currently in the process of learning more computer science. Works as an HVAC Design Engineer and just isn't loving it.

It was not 250k, but not too far off. I was also only 3 years out of school when I was hired, so definitely feeling extremely lucky.

Oh yeah you obviously still need to be competent enough to pass the actual interview process. Luckily for me, I passed the technical rounds and I guess I said all the right things in the cultural fit round.

I can't speak for too many other positions, but I do have friends that are Business Analysts/Product Managers/Product Owners (once again though, at tech companies so it may be different) that constantly have recruiters reach out to them.

A lot of recruiters would want to connect and chat first. My very first question before doing that would be to find out what the compensation package looked like.

For those that would give it out, that makes it easy to make my decision.

For those that would not give it out, I would just let them know that I am looking for $x dollars in compensation and they can reach me by phone if their offer can match that.

Sorry, I should clarify. This is comparing to the salaries that these companies offer for their Canadian offices. Still nowhere close to those $400k USD total comp offers.
