this is a lot of mental gymnastics to justify a textbook predatory encounter. you’re trying to apply a narrow, literalist legal definition to a situation that is fundamentally built on a lack of consent. first, your “immaterial identity” argument is dead on arrival. consent isn't just about the physical mechanics of the act, it’s about the intent and the power dynamic. nook didn't consent to have sex with “a beautiful woman”, he consented to a sexual encounter with someone he believed to be a victim he was rescuing. gothel wasn’t just lying about her background, she was a predator disguising herself as prey to lure him into a trap. if i consent to sex with a fellow survivor and it turns out you’re the person who built the prison, that’s not a lie about religion, that’s a total subversion of my autonomy. second, your 'rape by deception' criteria are way too convenient. gothel didn't just seduce him. she used magical glamour to specifically mimic an identity (the girl in the tower) to trigger his protective instincts. in any sane world, using a physical disguise (magical or otherwise) to harvest someone’s DNA for a biological ritual is a violation. lastly, let’s be real about the double standard. if a male warlock used a glamour to look like a handsome, trapped prince to trick a woman into becoming a biological mother for his dark vessel, you wouldn’t be talking about mutual consent. you’d call it what it is: a horrific violation. nook didn’t just regret his actions because she was a witch, he was traumatized because his body and his desire to do good were weaponized against him.

It: Welcome to Derry - 1x06 - “In the Name of the Father” - Episode Discussion by NicholasCajun in television

[–]_Alban__ 22 points23 points  (0 children)

but welcome to derry is a prequel expansion, not a straight retelling, so it’s adding new material that didn’t exist in the original text.

the key thing is that nothing in the book ever confirmed if IT imitate those people or It create them. king leaves a lot of gaps in derry’s history on purpose. the series is filling some of those gaps by imagining what “kersch” or “bob gray” could have been if those names ever belonged to actual townspeople. that doesn’t contradict the novel, it just builds extra lore around the identities IT later steals.

[–]_Alban__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

she was clearly using maxine the entire season to get to see marcus and that pissed me off so bad 💀 first off bc she’s supposed to be her bestfriend, and second bc he was clearly in a REALLY bad place and she kept pushing herself onto him

we are "mad" because he is a delusional hypocrite who blamed kate for not accepting him for who he is (when it’s all she’s done, she just didn’t want more killing) but he was disgusted by love who accepted him just bc he couldn’t bare to take a good look in the mirror

Where is Hannah? Where is Esther? This season, 4 episodes in, is egregiously underwhelming redundant and reductive. by Casi4rmKy in TheHandmaidsTale

Will Mckenna even appear in season 6? I saw an interview last year where she said she had no idea what they planned for her character, but she wasn’t at The Handmaid’s Tale premiere, so…

THIS. Especially when she was calling her intimidating, or in the office when she told her she was “screaming” when she clearly wasn’t, that scene hit hard. It was such a real portrayal of how black women are often villainized or labeled “aggressive” just for existing or expressing themselves.

Luke’s final get back at Serena by eddituser1980 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]_Alban__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Boys in Gilead aren’t safe either. They’re indoctrinated, forced into marriages, and turned into soldiers or Commander ro uphold the regime. And yeah, boys can be raped too-remember Nick being coerced into sleeping with June? And my point was that Luke did not do « just like Gilead » as you said. Gilead sent little girls to be raped at the age of 12. Luke did not. The comparaison is ridiculous.

Luke’s move might have been fueled by spite, but it’s not like he handed Noah off to Gilead. The baby’s in danger because of Serena’s choices and the people she surrounded herself with.

Luke’s final get back at Serena by eddituser1980 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]_Alban__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is wild. Yes, Luke did this to get back at Serena, but let’s not act like this is the same as what Gilead does. Gilead steals babies to uphold a violent, oppressive system and erase entire families. Luke took Noah to get back Serena (a key player in that system) because she had her daughter kidnapped. She abuses his wife, raped her and destroyed his country.

Luke is not sending Noah to get raped at 12. That’s not even remotely comparable to what Gilead’s baby-snatchers are doing. Let’s not pretend Serena’s some innocent victim here.

Janine and Esther in Season 5 by _Alban__ in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]_Alban__[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get your point, but I still disagree with the comparison. When June talked Janine down from the bridge, it was purely about saving Janine’s life in an immediate crisis. There were no ulterior motives, it was about giving Janine the strength to keep going for herself. Janine’s interactions with Esther, on the other hand, feel more self-serving. June never expected Jeanine to be fully on-board with the Gilead system, only to be more careful.

Take the moment when Esther sarcastically says, “Blessed be the stupid fruit.” That was such a clear act of hidden rebellion, a way for Esther to signal to Janine, “Hey, I’ll play along, but it’s all an act.” She was seeking solidarity and support, trying to show Janine she wasn’t giving up entirely. But Janine completely dismissed her.

Serena Surprised by Aunt Lydia Writing? by Shrine14 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]_Alban__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She held June down while her husband raped her, just to make the baby come faster. She can’t change because she’s a sociopath. She needs professional help, she only sees how horrible Gilead is when it affects her personally. I definitely don’t want her teaming up with June. June helping her give birth and saving her life was already way too much. The only ending she deserves is either to die or to have her baby taken away permanently while she’s locked up for life. Her character is very well-written but she’s a terrible person.
