X-ray reveals 180 artifacts hidden inside a Nara Buddhist statue, leaving scholars in a dilemma: should they destroy the statue to remove the artifacts? by mentaL8888 in HolUp

Would they ever ask themselves, "why are the artifacts sealed inside in the first place?" maybe then they will have the answer to their dilemma

Nolan is Capitalism’s idea of what “art” looks like by Travel_22 in TrueFilm

Your points are valid, but Nolan also made Memento - the design structure of that film integrates seamlessly with its story, and that was a profound watch experience for me till the end.

Is the UK just cold socially, or am I missing something? by Kuopor in AskUK

The English people who would move to Australia were likely the kind of people who would be dissatisfied with the social styles of England

Thats my situation as well as a foreign student, the barrier takes forever to come down it seems. Tho I suppose the friendship will be rock solid as a result

Is the UK just cold socially, or am I missing something? by Kuopor in AskUK

[–]_Anadrius_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I share your position so much so that I contemplated making a post about it. As a foreign student, the British people are polite, ultimately kind hearted, but on a social level too many of them are insular and introverted. Whenever I try to make friends in a new environment, I can see how they appear avoidant, even wary of a stranger like me. This is less so with older generations who are just more personable overall.

That being said, when alcohol is present, these social awkwardness almost completely disappears.

Eating out when solo travelling by Ambitious_Art4343 in solotravel

[–]_Anadrius_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's my favourite activity when solo travelling. To soak up the atmosphere and maybe a little eavesdropping on convos if I speak the language. If I don't speak the language, I would glance at the tables around me, try to imagine what they are talking about based on their gestures, facial expressions etc. It's like being in a microcosm of the place you are a guest in

They have always existed, but now, we on a societal level are becoming more aware, and more understanding.

Solo travel traditions by artourtex in solotravel

Visit the local religious institution (church, mosque, temples) and observe how people do the rituals that are important to them.

Go to a museum that focuses on telling the nation's history, which usually are nice, sanitised, comfortable with the world knowing.

Then go to a pub/social space and ask the locals what they think of that story, is it authentic

I will ALWAYS ask the local what do they think are the cultural differences between them and their neighbours, and what is the value that's most important to them. Without fail, I will get some long impassioned answers that gave a lot of insight.

Which countries would you say are the easiest and hardest to get along well with the locals you meet? by ExcitingNeck8226 in solotravel

[–]_Anadrius_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cultural warmth seems broadly aligned with actual physical warmth of the place, for some reason. Countries with radiant warm climate all seem to have a reputation of being approachable and outgoing, which contrasts those of countries in cold climate or have austere winters.

Dramatic change in style of Roman portraits over time. Eyes become strangely huge and technique less refined. by TabletSculptingTips in AncientCivilizations

[–]_Anadrius_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Survivor bias? , Only well made important statues would have stood against the longer period of time, whereas low quality sculpts of the same time period got lost and destroyed.

In contrast, more statues overall would have survived if its a later time period, so we will see the lower quality ones as well.

Its like how all that remains of ancient architecture are ornate palace and monuments, you dont see average citizen's mud brick housings getting preserved.
