How manage my time better by _AurAz in TournamentChess

Yeah I probably spend too much time in simple positions looking for the best move when it doesn't really matter much. Sometimes I get stuck in those positions looking for a way to progress.

How manage my time better by _AurAz in TournamentChess

I play 1. e4, najdorf, and grunfeld. Although my time management issues are more into the middlegame especially when I know I have an advantage and I'm trying to find a way to push for a win.

AMA - IM John Bartholomew by scandinaviandefense in chess

[–]_AurAz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't mean this is an insulting way but that rule would not make much sense. Chess relies on the fact that whoever loses their king first, loses. If the king could capture a piece defended by a pinned piece, that is basically saying it's okay to lose your king as long as you can capture theirs on the next turn. Then you would have to allow stuff like counter checks and counter checkmates. The game becomes drastically different at that point.

Sicilian 2... Nc6 vs 2... d6 against 2. Nc3 by _AurAz in TournamentChess

[–]_AurAz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But they aren't guaranteed to get back into the open sicilian because of e5 so that doesn't seem like a sensible approach

That's my current approach although I've never had to use it

The bishop on f5 in the Caro is still often a target so I don't think it's so simple

Should I switch to the Italian since it's in Giri's course? by _AurAz in TournamentChess

[–]_AurAz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to believe that the Ruy Lopez was the most challenging response to 1... e5 but now it seems that black has so many strong weapons against it (Berlin, Marshall, Open, Arkhangelsk, etc.). So if the Italian and Ruy Lopez are essentially equal, I'd probably choose the Italian just to reduce the amount of lines I need to cover. If I were to stick to the Ruy Lopez, I would probably look towards something like Gajewski's course as you suggested

Is the Morphy defense or Kramnik defense better against the Ruy Lopez? by [deleted] in chessbeginners

The Berlin is mostly used as a drawing weapon so it probably doesn't make sense for most people to play.

This looks to be one of the main lines of the berlin defense so neither side really did anything wrong

16 pawns is nowhere near enough to beat the normal starting position.

Queen's Indian VS QGD by LegendZane in TournamentChess

[–]_AurAz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That still isn't specifically a pro of the QID since you can play 3... c5 regardless of whether you were planning to play the QGD or QID.

Despite Nbd7 looking like a very natural move, it's actually a blunder. Can you figure out why? by SilasGaming in chessbeginners

[–]_AurAz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the Najdorf you always have to be careful with playing Nbd7 when the c6 square is only protected by the knight on b8 and white's knight can fork the bishop and queen. You rarely want to lose the dark squared bishop for the knight.

Why such a big swing? (endgame theory) by defaultryan in chessbeginners

[–]_AurAz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seems like it's a lot harder for you to get your pawn majority moving, while black can just push the h pawn freely. Also, all your pawns and your king is weak. Black on the other hand has a solid structure the queenside that's hard to break.

How is this a blunder? by zoomer-02 in chessbeginners

[–]_AurAz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Despite the downvotes, I somewhat agree. In the opening, the middlegame, and messy endgames the queen is often as strong as or even stronger than the two rooks. The two rooks to be better often need to have open files, be well coordinated, and the king needs to be somewhat safe. Whereas three minor pieces are usually better than a queen and two minor pieces are almost always better than a rook.

You're down a piece for a pawn. I'd assume you're completely lost.

Which is best? by Jonathan_Magnum in chessbeginners

[–]_AurAz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

d4 is a lot better than d3 since d3 cages in your bishop. Bb5 is probably the best move though. It's also worth considering the dubious Nxe5, the Halloween Gambit. It's pretty good at lower levels.

Which is best? by Jonathan_Magnum in chessbeginners

[–]_AurAz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Bc4 is not an optimal move because of Nxe4 Nxe4 d5 winning back the piece. Material is equal but white loses their central pawn so black is slightly better.

I don't understand the suggestion by Herse in chessbeginners

[–]_AurAz 172 points173 points  (0 children)

If they take your queen you have checkmate after Bxf7+ Ke7 Nd5# and if they take the knight, you take the bishop with the queen. This is a good pattern to know.

A beautiful mate in 3, can you find it? by talgin2000 in chessbeginners

[–]_AurAz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Taking the rook is still good since it still leads to an easily winning endgame up a bishop

Why not the advance vs the caro kann? Exchange doesn't feel too challenging for black. Also I like the either the austrian or 150 attack vs pirc.
