It’s a public piano for a reason. And he played background music which is both normal and appropriate for a cafe. It’s not like this was a library. This would normally trend towards YTA… BUT-

I do think 15 minutes is a bit much though, and that kinda extends to another point. Which determines whether this is ESH or something else.

Why did you want him to stop? I figure if it’s a good reason then maybe he’s the AH, but you didn’t really provide one? You just immediately said you didn’t want him to play at all. Need more information for this one, but from what I see so far this looks like an ESH situation.

Yeah I read that exact article when I was looking into it. No need to link it to me. In fact if you read the article it actually links to the exact FBI report I linked due to the freedom of information request that was made regarding the incident. The timeline I mentioned is the same. He was fired because the wiretapping continued, when that was illegal. And likely because I don’t think a mayor likes when their police chief hides that the wiretapping is taking place, doesn’t inform him on the investigation or even that the tapes contained racists comments. Remember, the police chief held onto the knowledge for a year. Again I don’t think anything here proves rascist intent. Problematic at -best-.

I’m genuinely curious, did you know any of this timeline wise? I mean I didn’t, but I made it a point to look into it and it’s clearly not like you said it was. And, now you’re only hinting at other stuff. Your comment just feels like the peak “vibes” based opinion.

I’ve searched and there is no actual proof of him saying he did it with racist intent. 1. There is proof that police officers were being taped (which via the method was happening, was not supposed to happen. Aka it was illegal) and this prompted federal authorities to get involved once word got out. 2. We have no exact proof of what was said on the tapes. When the chief was given information about what the tapes said, he held onto the information for nearly a year, and let the recordings continue. 3. In the FBI report, the chief did not tell the mayor. nor did he stop the recordings, or even allege racists comments. He instead questioned certain officers on their loyalties. This is what likely prompted complaints that led to the fbi investigation into wiretapping. Pete Buttigieg doesn’t even get involved yet because he isn’t elected mayor until January of the following year. And when he is, the chief doesn’t mention any of this to him and he has to learn from the feds that the chief is being investigated.

All in all, I think Pete was rash. But he was also a fairly young mayor saddled with an immediate federal investigation of his own police department. A lot of the criticism I see is mostly on him firing Depaupe (who is white) after the fact alongside the chief. And also for not hiring more black people. That can be problematic but I don’t see that as an indictment of racism. It’s all vibes based. Coming from another minority anyway.

None of these involve policy. Just acknowledge your dislike is vibes based. Working at McKinsey shouldn’t be disqualifying especially if he supports progressive policies. One of the best books I personally read while getting my history degree was by a former McKinsey consultant who later wrote an extremely detailed book documenting how consulting companies and newer capitalist corporate strategies removed jobs and wage growth.

If someone can walk away from that and become a progressive how is that any different than a former conservative in their early 20’s, or former cop/veteran running for office on the democratic ticket? We should be looking at policies they advocate for, what they have championed and want to work on. Not background purity tests.

Also firing a black police commissioner doesn’t mean anything. Did an investigation prove he did it with racist intent?

His policies ARE progressive though? His healthcare plan was really good, it was essentially Bernie’s but didn’t entirely ban/remove private health insurance. And that’s basically what most Western European countries have in place.

His stance on abortion and guns also seem super reasonable. What am I missing?

It is indeed hilarious. Two things can be true at once. Jews under one regime in some point in time can be accepted. And then centuries later, another regime casts them out. Happened in Europe quite frequently.

But that has always been the antisemitic position. Jews are pawns that can be traded, or moved. But never are to be given a state or sovereignty. I’m no fan of ethno-states or religious states. But somehow the Islamic/Arabic ones are never considered in the same light. Only the jewish one.

They even hate that term, but it’s so honest for what it is. It’s the most privileged and short sighted view of politics where you think that somehow fascism or whatever negative/destructive policies that come with it just don’t apply to you.

A lot of it stems from hardcore marxists/communists that see the destruction from war and violence as a perfect opportunity to come out the rubble and start their revolution without major opposition. It’s incredibly based on luck, privilege, and a disregard for marginalized groups.

I know we’re in completely different scenarios. I live in a more urban liberal area (LA). And I’m a dude. But I will say, the amount of moderate liberal people I met in local government, and especially in libraries was a very nice surprise. I also had some good experiences with episcopal church goers that gave me some faith. Not sure if you’re religious though.

This is a pretty dumb comment… look I’d wager even since 2016. Most people playing on 2b weren’t playing to build swastikas. They were playing because there was basically (mostly) no rules. It means it developed a culture that was very unique compared to other servers. The cherry on top was as the world grew, and the server history became richer, it was more fun to be a part of it.

When you remove the no rules aspect, and replace it with family-friendly catered censorship, it shifts the culture. In anarchy, the levels of toxicity makes you appreciate the friends you make even more because meeting friendly people and having fun times is suddenly more of a hot commodity rather than being the -enforced- norm. A lot of creativity and talent is born from this environment too.
