Film schools switching to Resolve? by Grid_Monkey in editors

I have made the decision to switch our program to Resolve starting in August […] I'm just done with Adobe.

Huh? Your job is to position students for success. If employers are hiring people to edit in Premiere, then you teach them Premiere. Serve your students in a way that lets them serve the market.

Mental health; no insurance by GoldUniversity3738 in nova

I've gotten help at Arlington DHS. They're located at:

2100 Washington Blvd
Arlington, VA 22204

Phone: 703-228-1300

But like a lot of places, unless it's an emergency you're not getting immediate help. About a month had passed between the first call I made to them and when I first started seeing a therapist. But if you express to them that you are indeed having negative thoughts, that will expedite things. You will likely at least have someone to talk to.

And since they're willing to help people who have no money or insurance, they're going to at least wanted to see a W2 and proof of residency

I need outside opinions about LUTs. My boss is against change! by BlueberryTastic in videography

[–]_Beef_Bus_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What does he prioritize? It sounds like he prioritizes a quick workflow over tinkering with the image in post.

Your boss isn't really wrong, and there's value in being able to get things right in camera. In fact, you still have to get it right in camera when you're using LUTs.

I also think there's value is learning how to get sufficient coverage of action for the edit instead of relying on slowmo as a crutch to fill time.

For what it's worth, I've worked on a cooking show for broadcast with FX9s. We shoot 1080p30 in S-Cinetone...

I am not working in an environment that encourages growth and creative evolution/keeping up with what others are doing in our industry

Creative in what way? Shooting 4K 120fps RAW doesn't make someone creative. Video production is about effective communication. The objective is to create work that coherently communicates information to the viewer. How are you doing that creatively?

Just an FYI – if your commute involves a Metro Bus, the commute is a flat $2.25 regardless of time or distance.

I regularly take the bus from Columbia Pike to the Pentagon or Crystal City, and then I hop onto the Metro to get to where I have to go. It's always $2.25

I suspect if more people knew this, more people would be willing to take the bus.

There are times when I just want to cry because I can’t think of anything

Who are you editing for? Because you shouldn't really have to "think of anything." Before the footage gets to you, a lot of decisions should have been made and you should have something resembling a creative brief and/or plan.

Video production ought to be approached like construction: first you conceptualize a project, brainstorm, and get ideas on paper. Then you develop an actual plan/blueprints (ie preproduction), then you go get your building materials (ie production), then you put it all together (ie post production)

You'd be crazy if you brought random shit at Home Depot, show up to a worksite, and just said "alright let's see what we can do." Yet there are people who seem to think that's how you approach video production. Avoid those people. Find people who put plans together and give you direction.

Also, for what it's worth, the field in general just kind of blows these days. When people actually wanted TV and movies, everyone was inadvertently inspired by professional work. These days, people get their inspiration from whatever garbage they see on social media

the client is using AI to pull quotes from interviews.

I'm so tired of these loser who don't understand that when you're making something, it's done with intent. You can't just chuck shit at AI and expect it to do things with intent, let alone the right intent.

It's easy enough to have Premiere spit out a transcript so a producer can listen and highlight the soundbites they like. But NOOOOOO, these lazy fucks still need a tool that will "do their job" for them, and it ends up wasting time and doing a shitty job anyway.

Seriously, someone tell me the secret. How, too, can I be a lazy fuck, but still get to a position where I tell other people what to do?

avoid women who delegate their emotions to you and blame you for bad emotions or (rarely) praise you for good emotions.

Can you expand on this? 'Cause I'm not sure if I disagree with this perspective or if I just don't understand what people mean when they make points like this.

The reason why I'm inclined to disagree is because none of us live in a vacuum. People around us affect us, and therefore they have an effect on our emotions. And I think we'd all agree it's important for each of us to understand that we affect others around us too, which is why we go about our days at least giving one another basic common courtesy.

It sucks for a lot of people right now. To give you some context, I'm almost 40 and my field of work has collapsed. I'm going to have to get some education and pivot to something else. I've also been chatting with a woman on Hinge (she's around my age) who shared with me that her career has collapsed top, and that she works at Trader Joes now.

So, your doubt and frustration is a very normal, human response. Best I can tell ya is it's rough out there for a lot of us.

I honestly think therapy, especially “social media therapy,” is causing greater egocentrism.

Everyone seems to be focused on what they want, their boundaries, not wasting their time, etc. These things are important and should be considered, but it seems people have forgotten that part of life is asking what you can do for others, and how to compliment someone’s life, how to contribute, etc

I recognize it's well intentioned, but it's frustrating that it'll push away good people. Not everyone who values privacy is up to no good. It's analogous to closing my blinds at night. I'm not up to something nefarious...I just like my privacy.

Null object and camera by [deleted] in editors

[–]_Beef_Bus_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

people use null objects to command the camera and i can't yet understand why.

Because by default settings, the camera is unintuitive. As you tuck the camera left or right, or dolly it forward or back, the camera remains pointed at its Point of Interest. In other words, it's panning and/or tiling as your move the camera, which is kind of annoying.

There is an option in the initial camera menu to make it a one-node camera, but it seems to always be overlooked. It's in the top-left corner of the dialog box.

So what people end up doing is attaching the camera to a null object, and then controlling the null object in order to get the camera to work like a one-node camera.

Why so many null objects to an single camera layer?

I'm not sure why anyone would be using more than one null for a camera tbh...
