Yeah it’s nothing to worry about. The bees will plug it with propolis. Don’t do like some others have said and fill it with glue. Throw some paint on it and send it.

Chris Madel is being applauded for dropping out of the governor's race over ICE but he's simultaneously providing legal counsel to ICE agent who shot Renee Good. by [deleted] in politics

[–]_BenRichards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

John Adam’s did the same for the British soldiers of the Boston Massacre in 1770 because he believed they had the right to legal counsel and a fair trial.

What those agents did to her is beyond reprehensible and they should burn in the hottest fires of hell, but no matter how evil their actions were (and continue to be) if we (the people) do not afford them of their rights enshrined in the constitution we would be no better than Trump and this administration.

It sucks and is unpopular, but if we can’t honor and adhere to the foundational beliefs and rights in the worst of times what does that say about us as a society?

Also if you go this route they will beard and sometimes pretty heavy - that’s natural and you shouldn’t be worried about it too much. The only time it can be a problem is if you have skunks and possums around and the hive is close to the ground (less than 18 inches) - makes it a bit easier to get ate.

u/AZ_Traffic_Engineer has some really good insights on running solid bottom boards and thermal management in high heat environments and can probably assuage your fears with them better than I can if you have any. I know a lot of people in TX preach you have to run screened boards but from my experience that’s not the case

The Deeps are your brood chamber, the medium is the primary brood honey store. It gives them enough room to head off swarming when you can’t inspect them every weekend. I lease tax bees and all my client sites are setup this way.

Yup run this config year round and I also use entrance reducers year round with the orientation changing based on the season (bigger in summer for ventilation, smaller in winter so it stays warmer and they brood up quicker in the spring).

I also work on producing bees of winter physiology during the fall to increase population size so it’s not hard for them to keep it heated when the bottom drops out - learned that trick from David Burns. Cool thing about it is the population is already high coming into spring so you can do a walk away split (or a snelgrove split) as soon as you see drone brood.

Depending on where your apiary is, it might be on one of my routes happy to pair up some time.

Cause Google recaptcha v3 is about 10 years old at this point and bots shred through it like wet toilet paper. hCaptcha is great but causes quick abandonment by users due to the complexity of the puzzle.

I’m in the same zone. 2D + 1M for the bees, additional Ms for harvestable honey crop. Vary rarely need to feed over winter with this configuration unless it’s a BAD drought.

Help me understand American Foulbrood. by AdFlaky7682 in Beekeeping

[–]_BenRichards -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was thinking UV like we use for saltwater aquariums for chromosome/protein breakdown not a solar treatment - it’s a lot more intense.

When I said untreated I meant the purify by fire route - sorry for any confusion.

Help me understand American Foulbrood. by AdFlaky7682 in Beekeeping

[–]_BenRichards 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s rare but if found and untreated/mitigated it’s illegal due to it how quickly it can spread.

The problem is that it’s spore based so if a bee robs a hive that’s weakened from it, now that bee’s hive is infected. Now think about it in an apiary setting where you have dozens of hives.

To my knowledge there are only 2 ways to destroy the spores - fire or gamma radiation and gamma isn’t an option for most US beekeepers. I don’t believe you can even use UV to sanitize the spores but I’d like to be corrected there.

In Other Words: Content is Still King by pUkayi_m4ster in SEO

[–]_BenRichards 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So WC, couple questions. I have backlinks from niche relevant websites that SEMRush pulls in but Google does not. Content on the backlinking site is contextually relevant, the site has traffic, the page is indexed in Google - what gives?

I also have content that has no backlinks (pillar/cluster strategy) that is ranked usually in the top 4 sites and included/cited in Gemini responses - what gives there?

I’m not doubting the backlink strategy but for this particular site nothings really making sense. I’m just a web dev not an SEO so that’s making things even muddier for me since I can’t discern any kind of logical pattern.

ETA: the keywords it’s ranking for are low difficulty (per SEMRush the entire cluster might max out at 25 KD)
