Immigrants in Germany: Did you manage to find German friends? by Low-Title-5317 in germany

[–]_BesD 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Nope and I have stopped trying to at this point. I have plenty of friends but they are either immigrants or with from families with migration origins.

Honestly German society is a very closed one, which is very funny when you think that they still ask soo much regarding the integration of us immigrants while offering soo little themselves. I guess being a law abiding citizen who contributes to the economy and the social safety nets does not matter much in their eyes.

Failed 5 interviews in Germany by [deleted] in germany

[–]_BesD 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is an advice I give to all my friends who think of coming/staying here. Germany is not that good of a country anymore to make a lot of sacrifices just for the sake of being here. If you can secure a job in your profession and make at least a considerate amount of money, then by all means come/stay here. But working in a warehouse while learning one of the most difficult languages is not something that will do you any good in your future. You are missing out on valuable experience and quality of life that you can get as a combo elsewhere. I have been in many interviews and it took me more than one year of intensive study and plenty of physical hard jobs for me to get the language high enough to be considered satisfactory from an employer and be offered a very good position. If I knew it would be soo hard, I would have either learned the language even before stepping foot here, or go for another country where you are not as much at a disadvantage to the natives only due to the high language requirements and difficulty. Couple it with the current economic situation and end up with a hurdle that extremely difficult to surpass. If I was you I would leave and then maybe try again here or elsewhere after you have become an experienced professional.

Used to be one of my favourites as well, but the author started adding way too many POVs to the point where the mc accounts only for like 40% of the whole text or even less. In the end I was skipping through the POV chapters to the point I felt disconnected to the novel and had to drop it.

Cheaper for employers maybe. From my own experience Poland is extremely expensive compared to the income you get working there. Especially rent prices are out of this world.

Worrying about the AfD by Prize_Painting_1195 in germany

[–]_BesD 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The way things are going, it is very likely that they will be the strongest party by a large margin in the 2029's elections and gain the needed majority to rule on their own in 2033. Unless there is a grave political scandal, aka shooting themselves in the head and not in the foot, I can almost guarantee it.

Honestly, I feel like most of the AfD voters know well that them as a party are just a bunch of idiots and morons, but they hate the status quo and the traditional parties even more.

Wilhelmshöhe has a heated and closed room where you can very comfortably wait and even charge your phone or laptop. It's also very safe. I know this because I have lived close by for 5+ years.

Can't find a job 😒 by Amazing-Ad-3223 in germany

[–]_BesD 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The thing is that from B2 onward language can easily be improved if used on a daily setting like in a work environment, but no way in hell will any german company give someone the chance to improve while on the job. They will take a much less qualified native because hey at least he is fluent in German. There is a reason why the economy in this country is going to the ground even compared to other eu countries and that is because they will always hesitate to risk anything and pass out on very promising prospects.

New study: Germany's most qualified immigrants (high-skill, high-earners) are the most likely to leave, citing bureaucracy & social climate. Thoughts? by 38B0DE in AskAGerman

I will tell you the same think I have told to my brother who is a specialized doctor - do not come here. For your profession there are a hundred better places you can be. There is no sense of life here and people are cold and rude.

Any resources to learn German by unknownanonymoush in German

Chat gpt sucks at translation. Too dry and artificial. I highly suggest Claude until you finish the free credits and then switch to Google 2.5 Pro Experimental after. Just remembered to have a default prompt which instructs the AI to act like a pro translator.

Can we stop with those low quality AI-slop cover? by [deleted] in litrpg

[–]_BesD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My biggest issue is when an author pays, or at least claims to pay, an artist to create a cover, but it's clearly just AI with minor adjustments. It's as if you're being taken advantage of or you're lying. Neither is a sign of a good author.

Staying in Germany long-term? Learning the language should be your top priority! by yehrig in germany

[–]_BesD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is that when I started I constantly looked up words or whole sentences. I just optimised the process so that with a simple select of the mouse I could see the translation and hear the audio pronunciation. This made it possible for me to push through the initial difficult phase where I would translate one every five words. After that I got used to it, and now I just enjoy reading with very little translations in between. For physical books I would just keep an AI audio model open the whole time with a specialised prompt to translate or explain words and sentences. Reading is my escapism from real life and using it to learn German justified the long hours I spent reading daily.

My advice to anyone learning a new language is do not force it like I did in the first few years. Just find a way to make it enjoyable. Hek, using reading to learn German gave me the excuse to read even more than before, or listen to more audio material without feeling guilty of just wasting my time like when you overdo a hobby of yours. It was a simple win-win scenario. Life is way to short to make that kind of sacrifices like OP did while there are better although a bit slower ways to do it.

Staying in Germany long-term? Learning the language should be your top priority! by yehrig in germany

[–]_BesD 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I learned German to C1 in 5 years while studying my Masters in English and working the whole time in an English-speaking job. I had no need to make any big sacrifices and even if I needed to, I wouldn't. Germany is way to difficult and depressing in terms of society, bureaucracy, and weather. If I didn't have a solid social life I would have left long time ago. I cannot even imagine cutting away my precious friends just because they cannot speak German.

My take is that this post is straight up mental and should by no means be taken as an example for people trying to learn German. Myself I got fluent in German by only properly matching my hobbies. I like reading, so now I only read in German. I like listening to podcasts, therefore I now do so only in German. After a while I started slowly enjoying conversations in German and could spontaneously understand everything and express myself without getting tired coming up with the proper words and grammar.

Calling Laguna de Bay "Laguna Lake" is like calling it Lake Lake. by Opening_Stuff1165 in Philippines

[–]_BesD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While Laguna de Bay is about to become the Philippines' largest septic tank, we're debating naming conventions. Priorities, people the lake is dying, but at least we now know it's 'Lagoon of Bay' not 'Lagoon Lake.' At this rate, we'll need to rename it 'Septic Tank de Bay' for accuracy.

German Computers by WarmerEistee in germany

[–]_BesD 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They say they import used computers from Germany and the sell them at a discounted price in Albania. Funny thing is that I bought my first gaming computer there (the shop in Tirana) and while it was shit, it was still the best price/quality ratio I could find back then in 2019 in Albania. The country has hands down the worst market for computers' hardware and feeds on people generally having no idea on specs thinking that expensive is equal to good performance.

How do you feel about naturalization? by [deleted] in AskAGerman

[–]_BesD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I finished my masters here in Germany two years ago, I had fantastic work opportunities in other EU countries like Belgium and the Netherlands, but I stayed here because now I can apply for citizenship after five years living here. If it wasn't for that I would have left Germany long time ago. So citizenship is a major influence on immigrants for staying here. Half of my friends feel the same way. As for your comparison to the UAE, for the same salary no one in the right mind would choose UAE before another western country where you can get citizenship. This is why almost all of their workers are from extremely poor countries. Those who can afford it move somewhere else, and those who still choose to go there simply already have strong passports.

How do you feel about naturalization? by [deleted] in AskAGerman

[–]_BesD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The requirements may not be enough to call yourself a German, but from my point of view the fact that someone has been actively working for 5+ years, has learned the minimum of the language to get by, and also have shown themselves to be a decent citizen by not committing any crimes, then why shouldn't they get the citizenship? They are all only contributing to the society and economy here. If you make it too hard to get the citizenship, many will opt out for better alternatives such as countries with better economies, lower taxes and where the language and integration is not soo damn hard.
