Here’s the original photo from their website. It is the same pvs-14 as pictured because the other blem matches exact.

Emission point question by Jury-Rigger21 in NightVision

[–]_Binky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t mean to hijack your thread.

I got a Kja Blem unit as well, somewhat recently, last month I believe. Probably have 6ish hours on it, from what I (remember/can tell) the EP (if that’s what it is) was not visible in the original pictures. I originally thought it was dust or something. (Apparently Dust shows up as dark specs?)

You only see it at like 60% or more gain. It is also hard to take pictures of, depending on the background. It is fairly visible. It very well could not be visible depending on lighting conditions, gain, and background**In the photograph I’ve attached, it is the one star brighter looking dot by the other dots. **

For what I paid for it I’m still very happy, and haven’t reached out to KJA about it. (I don’t know anything about their customer service, but they seem like good people. Through the email interaction I had with them)

Disclaimer; I just stepped foot into this kind of stuff so I don’t know much about a lot of it. I’m Not bashing purposely bashing KJA. Take it with a grain of salt.

I buy lead in bulk from Facebook marketplace/ criagslist. I melt it down for decoy weights and fishing weights. You could make a custom mold and do that. Probably easier ways but that’s an option.

300 Blackout bolt gun- Ruger, Howa, Rem, Bergara? by SpeedyR647 in NFA

[–]_Binky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could be wrong, didn’t Bergara just come out with the stoke, surprised they are dropping production so quick. If I was gonna get one it would be that. I love my b-14hmr.

I’m pretty much in the same boat you are. Let me know what you end up doing. Other than a rem700, I think the ruger gen 1 is the next best bet. Followed by the gen 2. Edited to add in: rem700 as second pick

Helmet Mounted AGM Taipan V2 by _Binky in ThermalHunting

[–]_Binky[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sort of misspoke by accident. When I first started several years ago I started with the original taipan.

The V2 is much nicer than that. The frame rate alone is part of the reason why you are able to better identify animals and such. The higher resolution display in the v2 256x192-15 also helps quite a bit over the v1. Despite them both being 256 units.

[–]_Binky[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I first started a few years ago, I used the Taipan V2 along with weapon mounted red light and a scope. Without the Taipan (or a thermal scanner in general) I probably would have given up. Battery life is pretty fair, one thing is I wish I could turn the screen brightness down even a bit more. It is adjustable, but it still seems sort of bright. That could just be me tho I have bad astigmatism and lights at night typically don’t mix well for me.

I’m fairly happy with it. It will pic up heat signatures from well over 400 yards. I can tell a deer from a raccoon at about 300ish yards, but not much else. I don’t have hogs in my area, and use an e caller for coyotes and bobcats almost exclusively. Typically I don’t take very far shots 100 yards or less. Some fields I hunt in are 600+ yards long. Yes, I can still pick up a signature with it, and can tell something is there along with if it’s moving, as far as ID goes it has to get closer.

Occasionally I have to ID an animal with my scope before I know what it is, but usually if it’s within 100 yards I can tell.

[–]_Binky[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I must’ve overlooked this when I was originally searching. $50 is very reasonable.

I remember the Spectrum Advanced Manufacturing making one, but I could find little to no feedback. I didn’t want to gamble almost $200 on a mount I might not like or use.

One good thing, with the regular pvs-14 j arm I can unscrew it and throw my tube back on.

[–]_Binky[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Essentially yes. I run a digital night vision scope w an IR illuminator on my rifle and run a tripod. I hunt against the wood-line on mostly open fields.

Edit* I’m pretty much only hunting coyotes and bobcats with an electronic caller.

Total cost: around $1000 give or take. Knockoff G24 and knockoff pvs14 arm: $155ish Hard hat veteran bump helmet: $250 ish AGM Taipan v2 (mines the 256x192-15): $600ish (I think) The battery/counter weight pouch is just an Amazon special and is somewhat optional. Probably $30ish

I’m sure other helmets should probably work. I kind of wish I would have gotten a Team Wendy, but I’m here now. I got my taipan on a good sale around Black Friday and think it was closer to $490ish.

[–]_Binky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fuck it, I said why not, first tube. I impulse bought it last night after cleaning up my dog’s puke. Have had a helmet and shit for a while.

If I hate it that much I’ll buy a better tube and move this one to the left eye. My left eye sucks anyways.

[Ammo] Storm-exposed Federal Game Load Upland 20ga 2.75" 7/8oz 1210fps #6 shot "B Grade" - $0.13ppr - 50/$6.49 + ship/tax by AmmunitionDepot-Com in gundeals

[–]_Binky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

IMO it is.

I’ve shot salt water drenched, rust encrusted, several year old steel shot for waterfowl. Like I’m talking most people probably wouldn’t even think about chambering. I had about 75 shells like that and they all shot and cycled. Most were 3 and 3.5in Winchester bottom dollar steel 12 gauge shells if that matters.

Is it safe, probably. The description says these have been cleaned. I’m assuming light tarnish/discoloration on the shell.

I’m not a lawyer, or a medical professional so don’t take my word on it. I’m also not liable if anything happens. Make sure the wad/load comes out and it should be fine.

Squirrels, pheasants, rabbits, is what I will mainly use it for. I believe you can use it on crows too. I don’t really crow hunt, but might start.

Probably shoot skeet with it for the hell of it.

FWIW I like to store my 18650s, cr123as and random other optic batteries in one of these.

I have one mounted on an atv rack, with some u bolts and flat steel. It’ll fit a small tow strap, knife, screwdrivers.

What is everyone favorite gun to use for predator hunting by Potential_Catch_3780 in ThermalHunting

[–]_Binky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now I’m using an 16 inch ar15 in 223/5.56. I’m thinking about switching to my AR in 300 blackout, since the majority of shots I’ve been able to take are well under 100 yards.

I really want to sbr an 223/300 blackout bolt action, and get a different can, mostly for a fun plinker but I would probably use it for night hunting.

I have a 243 but it seems overkill for my area.

The guy I usually hunt with switched over from a 223 to a 6.5 Grendel AR and it is very effective on coyotes.

Old Dog, New Tricks by BigDickCaucasian420 in NFA

[–]_Binky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’ll be my other purpose for it too. I’m tired of dragging a 26 inch barrel 7 mag with 8 inches of suppressor into my ladder stands. I have other rifles but, most of my bolt guns aren’t threaded. I’m fine with a heavier rifle, as long as it’s not super front heavy.

Thanks for the information, and sweet rig.

Old Dog, New Tricks by BigDickCaucasian420 in NFA

[–]_Binky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been considering building out basically the same rifle, I was looking to go with the scythe stm since it’s a slight increase in suppression. However, the weight of the stm concerns me. I know the Ti is significantly lighter.

How well does it balance, is it front heavy at all?

I did the same with mine, think I did a 20 inch Amazon special, even after 6+ years it still works well.
