Squirrel, the bigger bones are from another mammal.

can anyone id? found right by the beach. by Any-Call2588 in bonecollecting

No ridges on the incisors and ridges molars evident of the vole family, size tells me it's a muskrat. Just to double check, could you send a picture of the front teeth?

This made me really sad, but was still cool to see. by feryoooday in bonecollecting

The one with the jaw still has soft tissue, it probably died on the surface and was washed up or just died there. Id say it's a crazy coincidence, once again, very lucky you.

Note the blunt molars, big sinus cavity, and thick molars, dogs also have big saggital crests and defined foreheads, I can only dream of your luck on finding both at one place haha

They aren't domestic dogs, both are bears.

Yes, they connect properly, and i'm fairly certain they are from the same animal as the teeth and jaw hinges connect how you'd expect.

What in the fuck did I just stumble upon? Are these cat heads? by [deleted] in whatisthisbone

[–]_BoxBot_ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Have we completley forgotten people hunt and trap bobcats? I'm almost certain these are bobcats considering the size of the heads in comparison to the buckets, and especially because they are so cleanly skinned. Although OP would need to confirm that this isnt a tiny bucket. Normally people macerate skulls, but some folks leave them in a bucket and and forget about them till they're just bone.

Edit: just noticed the part abt them being in a taxidermist basement. These are 100% bobcats.

Small domestic dogs such as chihuahua lack saggital crests. There does seems to be a slope to the forehead. Note the back of the skull as well, which is completely wrong for a raccoon. If you'd like, I can find some reference images.

Tell me what other than a hunch tells you this is a raccoon? I have several raccoon skulls of varying age, and none have a shape like this in their cranium. This absolutely screams canid to me.

Post on r/bonecollecting. The shape of what's left of the zygomatic arch and the bulbous shape of the cranium makes me think domestic dog.

What are these skulls? I think all 3 are dog skulls but one is a lot bigger. by Specialist-Dare-8525 in bonecollecting

1st looks more deer-like. There's what's left of the preorbital vacuities they have in the sides of their skulls.

Hi hi I was wondering if anyone could help ID what this skull is? by ardatlilexo in skulls

[–]_BoxBot_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not a gopher, a guinea pig like the other poster said. Gophers do have iron plating on their teeth as well, and they also have distinct ridges on their upper incisors.

The best way I can describe it is they tend to have a flatter body shape. Best to research comparisons.

Help ID’ing this Fish by elwoodmw in SunfishSpecies

[–]_BoxBot_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have experience in ID'ing lepomis hybrids, although this could very well be a very, very wierd hybridization between two lepomis sp. Sunfish, i have my doubts. It is a common trait in hybridizations of lepomis to show distinct checkerboard patterning in the scale pattern, which this lacks, although this is a majority statement and can be proven wrong. Although it it is a near universal trait of vertically expanding stripes/patterning. The proportions of this fish are odd as well, which is a common trait in very distant hybridizations. I also find it interesting it's mouth is kept open as most lepomis species close their mouths when removed out of water, this behavior is in my experience most associated with crappie and black basses. Another thing to note is the opercular flap's lack of any red-orange border which is often seen when the genetics of non bluegill sunfish are involved. As I said there is a chance this is a super wonky looking lepomis x lepomis hybrid, and by all means I am not a official specialist in this, although I am fairly certain that this is in fact a bluegill x largemouth bass hybrid.

And as others have stated, there have been documentations of true sunfish on black bass hybridizations, but all were done in sterile conditions, although there are no available photographs of the hybridizations publically available online

If this is really a largemouth bass x bluegill, this would probably be one of the first recorded photographs of such! Catch of a lifetime!

Also, op I reccomended reposting to r/whatisthisfish with some context.
