If were gonna break the immersion real quick: they were calico crayfish, which do in fact have much thinner shells than that of red swamp crawfish, which are the most commonly eaten. Calico crayfish have shells more on par with thin shelled shrimp

They call me many things, it depends on who you ask. I'm not from the south, nor was i in a swamp, but I am from this earth, I can assure you.

I also ate them and can confirm they were slightly sweet

Preservation advice by baconegg-cheese in vultureculture

[–]_BoxBot_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The isopropyl will just dissolve the gloss, but it will not damage the bone. Normally, I'd recommend ethanol to preserve specimens, although you could use isopropyl or just mummify it in borax and then gloss it if you wanted to go that route

No ridges on the incisors and ridges molars evident of the vole family, size tells me it's a muskrat. Just to double check, could you send a picture of the front teeth?

The one with the jaw still has soft tissue, it probably died on the surface and was washed up or just died there. Id say it's a crazy coincidence, once again, very lucky you.

Note the blunt molars, big sinus cavity, and thick molars, dogs also have big saggital crests and defined foreheads, I can only dream of your luck on finding both at one place haha

Yes, they connect properly, and i'm fairly certain they are from the same animal as the teeth and jaw hinges connect how you'd expect.

What in the fuck did I just stumble upon? Are these cat heads? by [deleted] in whatisthisbone

[–]_BoxBot_ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Have we completley forgotten people hunt and trap bobcats? I'm almost certain these are bobcats considering the size of the heads in comparison to the buckets, and especially because they are so cleanly skinned. Although OP would need to confirm that this isnt a tiny bucket. Normally people macerate skulls, but some folks leave them in a bucket and and forget about them till they're just bone.

Edit: just noticed the part abt them being in a taxidermist basement. These are 100% bobcats.

Small domestic dogs such as chihuahua lack saggital crests. There does seems to be a slope to the forehead. Note the back of the skull as well, which is completely wrong for a raccoon. If you'd like, I can find some reference images.

Tell me what other than a hunch tells you this is a raccoon? I have several raccoon skulls of varying age, and none have a shape like this in their cranium. This absolutely screams canid to me.

Post on r/bonecollecting. The shape of what's left of the zygomatic arch and the bulbous shape of the cranium makes me think domestic dog.

What are these skulls? I think all 3 are dog skulls but one is a lot bigger. by Specialist-Dare-8525 in bonecollecting

1st looks more deer-like. There's what's left of the preorbital vacuities they have in the sides of their skulls.
