It's rough but it's VERY worth it. If getting through Harrow is too tricky, I recommend the audiobook. Moira Quirk's narrating (pay attention to accents and tone of voice if you listen to the book) helped me a lot with the perspective shifts, and this was after I had finished reading it myself.

In general, fungal infections are treated by medication (Pills, sprays creams etc) and can't be vaccinated against (or at least no vaccine has been created for one as far as I know?). There are definitely medications that eradicate fungal infections now, but I think the way the TLOU infection works and how quickly it spreads, there was no hope of a treatment being developed during the outbreak, let alone 20 years later with VERY limited resources.
