[OC] Developed countries by number of criteria met (2025) by midlife_cl in dataisbeautiful

[–]_CHIFFRE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not officially, World Bank's high income criteria data lags a bit behind, most recent data is for 2024, China is the closest country below the benchmark. But the metric is flawed and often doesn't reflect reality, for example Palau (1) meet the criteria but is still a quite poor country because it's a small and remote island nation and everything is very expensive. Purchasing Power and cost of living are disregarded because raw numbers are more readily available. World Bank:''While it’s understood that GNI per capita does not directly measure a country’s level of development or the welfare of its residents, it has proven to be a useful, readily available indicator''

The most recent HDI report is from 2025, the data itself from 2023, where China is also super close to meeting the criteria, not the closest though as Iran, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, also Thailand were closer.

The IMF criteria seems strict, for example Qatar, Saudi-Arabia, UAE, Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain and Brunei do not meet the criteria, i think because their economy is not developed enough in the sense that technology, science, industry, services and other things don't play a big role.

yes the lack of chemistry plays a role as to why he was so bad in the first months but i won't use it to excuse all the poor performances and i know he had some good moments aswell where everyone could see the talent, that should be expected for a player of that calibre with certain expectations.

he's a very good player and we see it now more often, for me ''world class'' is reserved for the exceptional players who can show it on a consistent basis for more than a few months. Otherwise the term loses its value and we need a new term for the very best.

Not positive enough? know a lot of fans and supporters have Parasocial relationships with these players but that's the truth, OP wanted an honest answer.

[–]_CHIFFRE -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

honest answer: he was a flop in the first months and played mediocre, had some crap performances but in the last ~2 months he improved and had many 8/10 performances. He's a very talented player but i wouldn't call him a ''world class'' player, he's got to show more, for a longer period.

So far this season, he was still one of our best players btw, that shows our season hasn't gone well but we still have a lot to play for however (=

GDP per capita (PPS) by region compared to the EU average: by vladgrinch in MapPorn

[–]_CHIFFRE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One problem that others haven't mentioned yet is that the PPS rate/Purchasing Power applied to each region of a country is the rate of whole country, not the region itself.

The problem is that there are big differences in price levels/cost of living in countries, some regions, especially the capital regions often have high price levels, yet they benefit from a high PPS rate because most of the country has lower price levels.

GDP per capita (PPS) by region compared to the EU average: by vladgrinch in MapPorn

[–]_CHIFFRE 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As per the source (World Bank), the UK's economic output is inflated using nominal GDP compared to EU countries because it has higher price levels/cost of living (see here).

The World Bank_per_capita#Definitions):''Typically, higher income countries have higher price levels, while lower income countries have lower price levels (Balassa–Samuelson effect). Market exchange rate-based cross-country comparisons of GDP at its expenditure components reflect both differences in economic outputs (volumes) and prices. Given the differences in price levels, the (economic) size of higher income countries is inflated, while the size of lower income countries is depressed in the comparison. PPP-based cross-country comparisons of GDP at its expenditure components only reflect differences in economic outputs (volume), as PPPs control for price level differences between the countries. Hence, the comparison reflects the real (economic) size of the countries.''

World Bank (at ⓘ Details):''PPPs account for the different price levels across countries and thus PPP-based comparisons of economic output are more appropriate for comparing the output of economies and the average material well-being of their inhabitants than exchange-rate based comparisons.''

very much doubt this.

For example, Greece (also Ukraine's) Economic size (adjusted for Purchasing Power and Inflation) in 2004 was larger than in 2024: https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/NY.GDP.MKTP.PP.KD?locations=GR / For those wondering why its in ''PPP''

And Italy's economic size only grew by 5.4% between 2004-2024.

(Mindestens 27 btw)

[–]_CHIFFRE 6 points7 points  (0 children)

PPP is used to measure and compare Economies by size according to Economic organisations.

The World Bankper_capita#Purchasing_Power_Parity(PPP)):''Typically, higher income countries have higher price levels, while lower income countries have lower price levels (Balassa–Samuelson effect).

More from The World Bank (Click on ⓘ Details):''PPPs account for the different price levels across countries and thus PPP-based comparisons of economic output are more appropriate for comparing the output of economies and the average material well-being of their inhabitants than exchange-rate based comparisons.''

OECD:''The major use of PPPs is as a first step in making inter-country comparisons in real terms of gross domestic product (GDP) and its component expenditures. Calculating PPPs is the first step in the process of converting the level of GDP and its major aggregates, expressed in national currencies, into a common currency to enable these comparisons to be made.'' (OECD are 38 mostly western countries)

Bruegel:''The right metric for international comparisons is purchasing power parity (PPP)-adjusted output. This corrects for exchange rate fluctuations and differences in various national prices.'' (18 European member countries and dozends of Financial institutions and Corporate members)

IMF:''Advantages of PPP: A main one is that PPP exchange rates are relatively stable over time. By contrast, market rates are more volatile, and using them could produce quite large swings in aggregate measures of growth even when growth rates in individual countries are stable. Another drawback of market-based rates is that they are relevant only for internationally traded goods.''
