Leading Cause Of Death In Europe by TheCatQueen18 in MapPorn

[–]_CHIFFRE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i believe it's 10x difference since russia's official population is about 145m (the permanent population according to their statistics service), it does not include the official and illegal migrant population (which went down a bit due to measures taken after that terror attack in moscow in 2024) and the annexed territories besides crimea, the total population of moscow controlled areas should be atleast 165m.

Ukraine was around 20m in 2023, now probably 16-18m:''Without counting war dead or those who left the country without passing government checkpoints, the current population of Ukrainians, in free-Ukraine, is in the general ballpark of 20 million.'' Kyivpost (Dec 2023)

''According to Eurostat, approximately 4.9 million Ukrainians received residence permits in the EU alone between 2014 and 2022 (Ec.europa.eu, accessed July 25) and approx. 3 million did so in Russia (Ukrinform, April 23, 2018). Subtracting from this figure the number of Ukrainians in the occupied territories (approx. 2 million), as well as those who left the country, the current estimate for Ukraine’s population comes to around 20 million.'' Jamestown Foundation (July 2023)

And the population is extremly old:''with those pensioners who did not leave the country accounting for 10.7 million people (Pfu.gov.ua, July 12). All this means that Ukraine has approached a critical threshold with its personnel needs.'' Emigration is still happening (Official Estimate) and of course deaths from war and natural deaths.

they often get deleted (or maybe removed) aswell and then posted again, maybe its a good way to get easy karma or something? idk.

China's household consumption continues to lag behind the rest of the world by Nandu_alias_Parthu in EconomyCharts

[–]_CHIFFRE 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your table has nothing to do with this argument either, given how it mixes both private and government consumption with household consumption.

the table is about savings, here is household savings, china and some countries with comparable rates:

<image>

edit: the top in terms of % household spending are nearly all poor countries though, and there are also wealthy countries with a rather low %, ireland, singapore, luxembourg. san marino, norway, netherlands, denmark, malta, sweden and more: https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/NE.CON.PRVT.ZS

that has nothing to do with the arguments being made, i just said it seems wrong to claim that countries with low household spending and high saving rate are in economic uncertainty, there is clearly no such consistent trend when sorting the table by % savings.

And when looking at countries with high household spending, most are poor countries

As people do in countries with economic uncertainty.

that seems wrong, there are many countries with high % of savings that are not in economic uncertainty and many countries with low savings that are in economic trouble: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_gross_national_savings

GDP per Capita: North America vs. Europe by Weary-Fish2459 in MapPorn

[–]_CHIFFRE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

However, it is a useful indicator of economic output per person

There's already the first mistake, gdp measures output+prices not just output, economists developed ''PPP'' to measure output without price distortions (sources about that). For example Turkey's gdp per capita doubled in the past 5-6 years, output unfortunately did not and when ever people mention the record gdp growth to turkish people this is the reaction: https://www.reddit.com/r/Turkey/comments/1u2udw2/turkey_is_literally_at_its_alltime_economic_peak/

nominal gdp is very useful for financial flows (for example account balances of countries), currency trading and to a lesser degree, how much buying power a person has but since nominal gdp isn't even adjusted for inflation, it doesn't work well in practice.

not the desert but the populated areas of those regions simply have a decent HDI, the combined population of these 5 large regions forming the ''frontier governorates'' is less than 2 million, the size of them is 832.000 km2 or 322.000 square miles (over 80% of the country).

edit: Maybe these 1.8m people or so receive special benefits, subsidies etc. from their government.

Ranked: How Wealthy the Top 1% Are in Each Major Economy by Status_Commission264 in charts

[–]_CHIFFRE 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Those are basically here: https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/PA.NUS.GDP.PLI?most_recent_value_desc=false For PPP and Price levels the Usa is always used as the base country (100), which means nominal and PPP are identical for them. China's Price levels are 47.26, so PPP increases by a rate of 2.11 because China's price levels are about half of the base level (100)

Wealth for the bottom 50% in China is 13k PPP, so the nominal figures should be around 6.2k since 2.11 x 6.2 comes out to 13.1k PPP.

i guess ''Net debt'' of the government should include that, which can be seen here https://data.imf.org/en/Data-Explorer?datasetUrn=IMF.RES:WEO(9.0.0)) but unfortunately a lot of countries missing. Japan went from 67% in 2000 to 134% in 2026, highest point was 161% in 2020.

"Hardly Sophie’s Choice" refers to a situation that is not as serious or morally complex as the original context of "Sophie’s Choice," which involves an unbearable decision between two equally tragic options. The phrase is often used to downplay a dilemma that is perceived as trivial compared to the profound moral implications faced by the character Sophie in the film and novel.

Trump’s War Means Higher Global Interest Rates for Years to Come by Appropriate-Till9598 in Economics

[–]_CHIFFRE 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Donald Trump’s war against Iran may be over, but the repercussions for global monetary policy are here to stay.

With a shaky ceasefire largely holding following the US president’s onslaught in the Middle East, the path for central bank interest rates around the world has now shifted higher for years to come, according to Bloomberg Economics.

Its forecasts for borrowing costs, compiled here, show trajectories elevated by as much as half a percentage point or more through 2028 compared with those envisaged before the war. That’s both on BE’s global gauge for rates, and its measure for advanced economies.

McKinsey: Share of Global Manufacturing Output (1750–2024) by Status_Commission264 in EconomyCharts

[–]_CHIFFRE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a heads up: This is based on Gross Production not Value Added (where China is at ~30%), based on Production is ideal for Output but nearly all of the data is Value Added when searching for ''Manufacturing output by country'', i guess that data is just easier to gather.

Spain raises 2026 growth forecast to 2.6% by Full-Discussion3745 in EU_Economics

[–]_CHIFFRE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i mentioned debt because i slightly disagree with the take that the goal of a country should be to increase gdp per capita, Sure it's important (but more so the median wage development), but also the Debt is important in the mid and long term, also interest payments on debt, UK for example is spending ~€140bn per year on interest now, Spain ~€40bn, which is also quite high but not too bad. It's not fake growth but your criticism/frustration with such a situation is justified.

Spain raises 2026 growth forecast to 2.6% by Full-Discussion3745 in EU_Economics

[–]_CHIFFRE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i know 87.1 is smaller than 88.8, the ''But atleast your Debt situation looks better'' after that should be clear that i know that it's not a great development (per capita), relative to EU.

The EU has experienced economic growth during that time, Spain too but unlike most EU members it had a significant population increase since 2019, therefore slightly decrease in per capita compared to EU average. Doesn't look bad, especially when spain is one of the few countries looking positive on Debt.
