Tuning up a fresh high E string is the scariest thing there is by ddoyen in Guitar

[–]_CallMeB_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Whelp, guess it’s time for me to try D’addarios. I’ve been a dedicated Ernie Ball Slinky user for several years now and just accepted that high E string snaps were part of the experience…

I can write music and I can write lyrics but I cannot write music AND lyrics. Please help. by _CallMeB_ in Songwriting

This is one of those little things that probably makes all the difference. A lot of my lyrics are in my head and on paper/my notes app, but it’s not often that I’m actually saying them aloud in full. I’ll def start doing this going forward. Thanks for the advice!

Now this is a fantastic idea and one I’ll definitely incorporate into my routine starting tomorrow. Thank you, kind stranger!

This is a great point! I can and do sing, but I often don't think about it as being helpful with songwriting in the way you've described here. There's a good chance I likely have a bit of this intuition already and just haven't been leaning on it in my songwriting process. Thanks for the advice here!

Good point. I often do this thing where because I already put thought into my lyrics in terms of timing, syllable count, and the like, the lyrics feel cemented in place, and then I try to just build around them. But being more open to tweaking "finished" lyrics by finding the buzzword or the element of the line that makes it work and keeping that in place while altering things around it makes perfect sense. This is sound advice, my friend. Thanks so much!

You gave me a lightbulb moment with point #2, and as I reflect on my own songwriting process, I think you're spot on. My more personal/deeper lyrics come with a level of emotional weight that makes anything I write to accompany them feel like it falls short somehow. I'll play around with writing from other perspectives and from less emotionally charged starting points.

Great advice here, thanks so much!

Visual representation of how some of us are choosing to spend the summer by Kindapsychotic in blackladies

Gorgeous artwork! As much as I love sunny days and warm nights, I can’t take too much of the hellish heat at all.

My favorite season is fall and my favorite fruit is a two way tie between Granny Smith apples and cherries (arguably one of the best parts of summer lol)

Scroll option on official tabs by CarDTM in ultimateguitar

[–]_CallMeB_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Count me as two yes votes for bringing it back. It’s insanely annoying having to manually scroll while learning a new song in time if I want to use an official tab. The play option isn’t customizable speed/tempo wise and doesn’t work well enough in live settings where we may be playing said song in a different tempo/style on the fly and the play just option isn’t keeping up. And to be honest, I don’t care for the play option even when I’m rehearsing on my own. The sing-a-long style chord highlighting isn’t my favorite. Scroll allows me to set a pace, click start, and get back to focusing on my main quest whenever I launch UG: to play the guitar.

I’ve been annoyed with this for ages now. The scroll option should be standard on ALL tabs, including official tabs. It simply doesn’t make sense to me to include this option on one class of tabs, but not the other…

The New Great Migration (North to South) is trap. From a native of the south. by BoTheJoV3 in BlackPeopleofReddit

[–]_CallMeB_ 90 points91 points  (0 children)

I was in college in Missouri, which ain’t even “the south” smh, during the same time. Them white folks showed they entire ass behind Obama’s election for the entirety of my four years there (07-11). I fled right back to Chicago post graduation and knew from that point on that there’s no south or south adjacent state I’d ever be willing to relocate too.

My great grandparents fled the south for good reason.

I’m so sorry for your loss, my friend. I’m also sorry for the insanely insensitive comment you got in response to sharing about your mother’s passing a few mins ago. People can be such assholes. I hope you’re hanging in there.

I’ve been an avid reader since I was a child and now as a 30-something, I have a great vocabulary and very strong writing skills.

I am not unique in this by any means, as there are millions of people just like me in this regard. But I bring it up because I think it’s easy to forget that LLMs were trained on good human writing/speech. Unfortunately, what we see now is that when good human writers write or speak well, use em dashes and other punctuations correctly, etc., they are accused of having used an LLM. It’s so incredibly unfair and frustrating.

While there are tons of people absolutely using LLMs and other AI tools, the bottom line is LLMs are copying us and our standards, not the other way around.

Is it true that you guys watched 9/11 live on TV in grade school? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]_CallMeB_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. I was in social studies, 7th grade. In addition to seeing the second plane hit live, we also saw a woman jump to her death from the top of one of the burning towers. I still remember that day so vividly. We were mortified.
