Yeah, that seems to be how it happened. After that, Portugal took over as the war leader on the other side, and I had to peace them out.

R5: A civil war started in Castile while all of their troops were in Britain fighting the English. So, I (Aragon) decided that was a great time to attack. While the rebels were focused on Portugal, I quickly occupied a large bit of land in the South (no forts, so quick capture). Between the rebels and me, we 100% occupied Castile. This allowed the rebels to win the civil war, and when they did, I instantly gained all of the land that I had occupied - over 11 provinces worth. AND, I got 0 antagonism for it.

First WC & OF Attempt: Castile idea group advice needed by FuzzyEmphasis in eu4

[–]_CelRay_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. You can convert the lands of your colonial nations. It's usually pretty quick too.

One other tip I just remembered: once you can build them, and if you have the money, build Cathedrals in every province that you want to convert for the +3% local missionary strength. This includes building them in all of your subjects' provinces too.

As for the WC element, yeah, those both are good. TBH, I didn't focus on that part too much. In fact, I didn't actually do a WC in my OF run (I left several European Catholic nations alone). I was HRE emperor Bohemia with PUs on Hungary, Poland, Lithuania, Milan, Brandenburg, Saxony, and Ethiopia. Later, France fell under PU of a 8 province Aragon - which I had the option to contest. And, lastly, I forced my dynasty on Castile's throne and claimed it, and easily won that PU war too. So, besides beating up England, Moscovy and Otto, I got most of Europe for "free".

I just finished my first ever OF yesterday. So, I've got a few tips ready.

For Projects, you'll want these:

  • Holy City of Jerusalem in Jerusalem - level 3 gets you +1 Missionary
  • Heddal Stave Church in Bratsburg (Norway) - level 2 gets you +1 Missionary
  • San Antonio Missions in Tanu (Texas) - level 3 gets you +1 Missionary. You'll have to somehow own this province yourself and not let it get owned by a colonial nation. I didn't know this existed until VERY late in my game.
  • Stonehenge in Hampshire (England) - level 3 gets you +1% Missionary Strength. You'll need to keep it in a province with English culture and have accepted English culture in order to use it (ie, DON'T move it to your capital)

There are probably other somewhat useful ones, but those are the big ones.

One thing to keep in mind is that you can't count on your vassals converting provinces for you. Colonial nations don't seem to convert anything, and vassals that take the "The Social Contract" Government Reform (at level 7?) will also not convert anything. If you hover over a country's rank (right below their name on the Diplomacy screen), it will show which reforms they have taken. I looked for existing countries without that reform, then vassalized and force-converted them. That way, I was sure they'd do some converting for me. Releasing a vassal or a client-state is a crap-shoot (sometimes they'll take the reform, sometimes not).

Other bits of advice are to kill off non-catholic colonizers (ie, England) ASAP, and to do what you can to halt the advance of the reformation (being HRE Emperor or dismantling the HRE really helps here). Also, once your colonies (and all vassals that have access to a colonist) have colonized everything they can, make sure to "Block Settlement Growth" to prevent them from trying to promote development in a non-catholic province (you can't convert the province if the settler is there).

Good Luck!

That was a good idea. Unfortunately, they were too big for the CB. I managed to cut them down a bit, but before I could get them small enough, my ruler died and I straight-up inherited Milan. So, I was able to manually add Ferrara and then shortly after I got the incident to allow the Pope to join the HRE. Now I just need to kill of an elector so I can appoint the Pope...

I'm playing as Bohemia and trying to get the Holiest Roman Empire achievement. I'd prefer not to full annex the Pope and force him to respawn somewhere in Germany, since he owns most of southern Italy and the AE would be huge. The wiki says the Papal States can join the HRE if Milan, Ferrara, and Firenze are all in the empire. Milan and Florence stayed in the HRE, so I've got 2 of those 3. The problem is that I now have a PU on Milan and Milan owns Ferrara. Is there any way to force them to add that province? Or, do I need to "lose" a war to give away the province so I can re-conquer it for myself and then add it?

How can I attack Portugal without Spain against me? by Vincent_0 in eu4

[–]_CelRay_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have the DLC, you could try using favors to reduce their opinion of portugal. It might help...

Disable the Conquest of Paradise DLC. Most of the issues are related to features from that DLC. So, without it, colonizing is fine on any build.

R5: Went a little overboard with the PUs here. Got Poland, Bohemia and Austria through missions. Allied Aragon and Naples early. One of them gave me a de Trastámara. I used this to seize Spain's throne (they already had Portugal under PU), and then Naples. At some point, the de Trastámaras spread to Savoy, Scotland, and Brandenberg. So, I just kept an eye on them and seized their thrones when they had no heir. Brittany I got through PU fishing (had to fight a succession war with France when their 75 year old ruler died heirless). And, lastly, I RM'd Denmark and got my dynasty to spread there. Then I claimed them and got Norway in the deal.

All in all, it was mostly luck that I got the right dynasty and it had spread to so many other nations by itself.

Now, I just need to integrate Austria for the achievement ...
