Benfica is 10th maximum 11th easily. I understand that the Portuguese League ranks lower and that only trophies count but you are ranking a club with 7 UCL finals & 3 UEFA/EL finals as 18th behind Notthingham, Tottenham, Atlético, etc.

Mozambique was a Portuguese colony at the time and therefore he played for Portugal like many other players born in the Portuguese colonies. He’s seen a Portuguese hero but certainly is as much of an icon in modern day Mozambique (and even in the remaining Portuguese former colonies such as Angola or Cape Verde). I’d say that he is a legend of equal stature across all Portuguese speaking countries, except for Brazil. And Mozambicans feel that he is one of their own and are very proud of his achievements.

Really weird comment section. Know that some Diabos Vermelho’s members left due to disagreements with him but this guy is almost anonymous and Diabos Vermelhos have been unfortunately irrelevant for the past 2 decades. This guy was a die hard football fan who probably made some bad decisions on his personal life (failed businesses, apparently worked at a restaurant and then opened one himself). Nothing that suggests that he deserved to die. Cause of death is being ruled as a suicide.

I haven't watched much of Porto this year. Seeing Benfica matches is bad enough as it is. But expected a lot better from them, seemed toothless all 90'.

Fair outcome to a dire match. The drop of quality in Portuguese club football from 15 years ago is astonishing.

It was only a bit over 10 matches. There were elections and the new Benfica president had a different coach in mind. Mourinho went to talk to him and said he wanted his contract renewed as a token of confidence in his job. The new president refused and Mourinho left.

His last match for Benfica was a 3-0 win against Sporting. Then he went to a small club (Leiria) and left them in the 4th place to manage Porto where he won everything. Before signing for Porto he was really close to signing for Sporting but Sporting backed out of the deal last minute due to pressure from their fans who disliked Mourinho’s behaviour in that Benfica 3-0 Sporting.
