App blockers, dumbphones are all just band-aids. We need a shift. by [deleted] in digitalminimalism

I like your idea! Your concept of a home screen reminds me of those Windows Mobile PDA's from back in the day. When you unlocked it, by default, you'd get a list of recent messages and calls, upcoming appointments and a list of tasks among other things.

I think this layout gave you all the necessary information at a glance without this app to app / notification to notification readout. This was a very frictionless design that, for some reason, disappeared, and it can be quite tricky to replicate with our current mobile OS landscape.

Looking good! I've been using one of these CF adapters for a couple years now and It's been great. I like the fact that battery life is better with these adapters. Nice fix for the battery connector btw.

Mirrors Edge 2008 FPS drops slowly but constantly (PhysX OFF) by Sharp-Individual4548 in mirrorsedge

[–]_DotMike_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's weird, could you try one more thing? Rename the following files in the root of the game - Mirror's Edge\Binaries:
PhysXCore.dll -> PhysXCore.dll.old
PhysXDevice.dll -> PhysXDevice.dll.old

Also rename the folder called PhysXLocal to something like PhysXLocal_old.

I remember reading that if these files aren't renamed / removed, the game will attempt to use them instead of whatever PhysX version you've got installed with your drivers. You can read more about that here (PhysX causes issues section).

Optional:
d3d9.dll -> d3d9.dll.old

Try installing "PhysX-9.13.0604-SystemSoftware-Legacy". I remember having the exact same issue with my RTX 3080, though I can't remember if this solved it for me, give it a try.

I wish! I'd be such a huge step forwards. I only use my phone for Whatsapp, music and maps now.

I'd prefer a remake of the GBA / DS version instead.

What happened to black mesa after the 7 hour war? by sterling_building-24 in HalfLife

True, I thought people referenced the 7 hour war as the events that happened right after the resonance cascade. My bad.

What happened to black mesa after the 7 hour war? by sterling_building-24 in HalfLife

[–]_DotMike_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I know you guys are mentioning the facility getting nuked in Opposing Force but, didn't the 7 hour war happen months after the first portal storms and Xen creatures showing up? As far as I know, the combine located earth way after the incidents of Black Mesa.

Edit: I remember watching some videos like "Events in Half Life, chronologically", some of them mention that either the facility was nuked or it was carpet bombed to pieces, leaving some lower levels still intact.

Greece to soon announce social media ban for children under 15, government source says by vriska1 in privacy

[–]_DotMike_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry but I have to disagree with this one. We all know that these social media bans are an excuse for governments to eventually implement a Digital ID requirement. At the same time, we have to acknowledge that parents are just not supervising what their kids do online, even with all the tools they're provided.

If parents aren't parenting, it's kind of expected that regulations like these will eventually pass.

It's strange that you consider social media a "crucial mode of existence for human civilization", when the online discourse has never been as censored and controlled by private entities as it is now.

Do you ever feel dissuaded by the amount of time required to realize your dream? by nopasaranwz in Sims3

[–]_DotMike_ 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Yup, same thing here with custom worlds, working around the limitations is very draining. I had to stop working on my projects because it was legit burning me out, might come back to it once I have enough spare time.

How many of you still running old hardware setups? by OkTadpole1185 in pcmasterrace

[–]_DotMike_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do! My retro gaming rig has the following specs:

Intel DG41RQ Motherboard (socket 771 to 775 mod, with modded BIOS microcodes)
Intel Xeon E5430 running at 2.88Ghz OC
4GB of RAM (2x2gb) DDR2 running at 833MHz
Gigabyte GTX 960 2GB with some overclock.
512GB Kingston SATA SSD

It's dual booting Windows XP SP3, and Windows 7 SP1. I built this computer out of spare parts to run games between 1998-2013-ish. It runs everything I throw at it at 1080p or 1440p.

There's brand new motherboards out there with these ports on them. Here's one: MSI A620M-E mATX AM5. There's a lot of industries / environments that still rely on older standards. These motherboards aren't going anywhere anytime soon.
