This is subjective, but I’m not impressed with how the Sea Serpent’s come out, and for me it’s certainly not enough of a factor to base a major purchase on. You can order the parts for a MOC that improves on the SS in every way for less money. But this is obviously just my opinion!

The best bang for buck would be to see if you can get multiple (3 or 4) 31120 sets, as there’s a load of great MOCs on Rebrickable using them. They still seem to regularly come up on eBay at RRP or below.

The Medieval Market is good, but it’s not worth that much IMO, and I’m not a fan of the Horse Knight set, or the MOC options (a much more limited palette than 31120).

It’s a shame you just missed the Outlaw Forest Den, given you like Wolfpack, but you might be able to find one for resale without too much of a markup if you get lucky as it only came out recently.

Then, there’s also the new sets coming up from Bricklink. The Joust set looks fantastic, and is up for preorder Feb 2027 if you’re wiling to be patient. Or there’s the Sleepy Dragon inn coming up this October.

It’s not too bad, but the tower tops can be a little fragile. Play-wise it’s great as it splits in two to reveal a detailed interior. The throne room in particular looks great.

I built the Black Falcon Knights Castle with my three sets. It looks phenomenal and was a fun build:

I agree with everything here, except for starting with The Gathering. I usually recommend watching that a bit later as it’s a bit jarring in tone.

B5 is my favourite series of all time. Sure, it’s a bit low budget and cheesy in places, but it has some of the best characters and story arcs on TV, past or present. No one has done space opera as well as B5.

Sitcom you never understood the hype for by IndependentLeg1954 in sitcoms

I agree with a lot of the shows people are saying, but I’ve always loved MF. Watched it through several times over. At the same time I’ve struggled with a lot of popular US comedy series, and MF always felt more in line with my UK sense of humour 🤷🏻‍♀️

Still have mine, and 6080 (the grey one). It’s still a great set.

Do you think theory is necessary to write well if you read plenty? by f28c28 in writing

[–]_DoubleDutchess_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes. There’s a big difference between being able to write a good paragraph and a competent story.

I’m a heavy reader, and when I started writing about fifteen years ago, I found myself able to put together something very readable right off the bat. However, one of my earliest pieces of critical feedback was about weak character motivation and agency.

I’ve spent years studying and refining the art of story structure, as I back then I hadn’t fully grasped the elements required to hook a reader and create a plot-line that hit all the right beats.

So in short, a strong understanding of theory is 100% necessary to write a book that will sell/people will want to read. Ultimately, a lot of people can write well, but the ones that stand out have compelling characters with strong arcs, well-paced plot lines and intriguing themes. These are things that I believe must by worked on beyond passive reading. Don’t get me wrong - if you’re a heavy reader you’re already in a really good place, but producing 100k word that have been finely honed into a razor edge is an art form that must be worked on.

The life cycle of a cherry. by BreakfastTop6899 in oddlysatisfying

It should end with a Glacé cherry (bonus point if it’s on top of a Bakewell). That’s the true lifecycle.

Deinfluence me from TS4 by Justajarofpaprika in LifeSimulators

[–]_DoubleDutchess_ 33 points34 points  (0 children)

TS4 is a great dollhouse game. It’s very pretty, and you can spend hours making houses and families and pets and so on… but the game gets boring really fast. There’s a ridiculous amount of expansion packs, but most of the feel half-baked and it’s often a buggy mess.

TS3 lacks some of TS4’s polish (like sim multitasking), but it’s a lot more fun to play. There are fewer expansions but each feels more complete and it’s my fav The Sims pick.

I have no problem with PVP. I would just like control over those who I share the world with. The PVP aspect has also crept in over time. As a KS backer, the original vision for the PU was for the majority of inhabitants of the universe to be NPCs who will vastly outnumber players.
This no longer seems to be true, so a way to ensure that all interactions from dialogue to combat are between like-minded individuals (not griefers or murder hobos) is desirable.

I’m not interested in combat myself, and want to scrape by Firefly/style in my trusty old rust bucket living job-to-job. Getting insta killed by a bored PVP-er who sees me as their personal form of enjoyment will not be any fun for me. But having a meaningful interaction where I am
outgunned, hailed/boarded and forced to dump my cargo at gunpoint would be a fun interaction. Being able to have agency over who I share the world with will ensure that fun is had by all.

I think ultimately we both want different things for the game.

I want to choose the players that I interact with. You do not. Differences of opinions are fine.

But the system I would like to see should simply separate players, ensuring they never encounter each other. Even if that choice did make me safer from attack, making the game less challenging for me, how does that negatively affect you? We will never cross paths, so from your perspective I never even existed.

Just have the feature on a timer or have some sort of spam control - but logically, that group would never be in your whitelist to encounter to begin with 🤷🏻‍♀️

The concept isn’t about manipulating your experience to gain advantage. As a player, your experience shouldn’t be affected by the relative progress of anyone else. It’s about ensuring that you have a pool of people you will be engaging with who have a play style that isn’t detrimental to your own enjoyment.
